  • Hey Art Friends!
    Today's episode is about how to create REAL BUTTERFLY EARRINGS!
    This tutorial demonstrates how to create beautiful earrings from real butterfly wings using UV Resin! Traditional resin would also work for this project, however it should be noted that curing times and methods will be different.
    NO BUTTERFLIES WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO! The butterfly in this tutorial died of natural causes and was donated to me for the purposes of making this set of earrings.
    Butterfly wings are magical things, they tend to disintegrate over time and can be difficult to preserve! This method works wonderfully to ensure that the wings do not change color and are perfectly protected.
    Please note that I obtained a lamination pouch from OfficeDepot and used their lamination services, which cost approximately $2.50 USD. If you have a laminator and laminating pouches at home, feel free to use that! I enjoyed making this so much that I invested in one! I will show how to use it in the future!
    Also, I highly recommend using the "hot needle" trick on the laminate material taking special care not to fill the tiny hole for your jewelry findings with the resin. The reason I recommend this method is that even light pressure with the hand drill & bit may cause the layers to separate, which is not desirable in your finished product!
    So, if you find a butterfly that you would like to preserve and use in a functional way, try this method! Just be sure to leave a small allowance of the laminate around the wing. If you cut too deep you will run the risk of opening the laminate which allows the resin to come into contact with the wing, potentially causing discoloration.
    I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
    Happy Arting!

      Also wondering what temp you run your laminator at?

      I run it on the higher setting for the laminator with the wings for a good seal. So far it hasn’t damaged any wings that have been treated this way. It’s a cheapo from the depot, which I modified because mine always hangs up when it’s going through. And I promise that’s the last thing you want. So mine is modded to remove the front. I believe it’s a “Scotch” brand laminator. But I love to sticker graffiti everything sooo it’s kinda covered up at this point. I didn’t want scotch getting upset about it if I showed the laminator in any of my videos.
      It’s just a cheap nail lamp I bought a few when I saw them at the Amazon resale store local to us. It cost $3-5 this way. I’m unsure what they cost on average. But they are fairly inexpensive to purchase. One is Sun x9Plus professional nail equipment, and the other I have is from Vishine it’s a 9C UV LED nail lamp. The sun has a 99s low heat mode on it, which the vishine doesn’t have. That’s typically what i use and I have to set it many times. It’s just what I have, but I know there are better lamps specifically for creating art with uv lamps. I appreciate the feedback about the video. Sorry I haven’t been posting much lately. I’ve been hard at work developing Makyn.me behind the scenes for Artists & Crafters like myself & to combat corporate greed. If you’re Makyn art, you’re welcome to join us at makyn.me and offer your work alongside my own!

    Question: if I poke a hole and put a wax paper rolled up into a small stick shape into the hole so I won’t block the hole with resin, will that work? I’m just nervous about accidentally covering the hole.

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps if it is small enough and could be flattened behind so you can apply the UV resin? The wing would need to be level when you do this step. If you make the hole a decent size it doesn’t go into the hole but will surround it and go up to the edge. Just be sure not to drag the uv resin over the gap where the hole should be, and you ought to be fine. It’s a viscous fluid, very thick and doesn’t like to pour over edges unless you encourage it to do so or apply so much uv resin it has nowhere else to go. That said, uv resin sometimes may shrink depending on the brand, and will pull back from edges slightly. I hope this is helpful! Perhaps try it on a test piece with a hole before trying it on the wing would help allay your anxiety?

    Is there any other way to dry the UV resin? What to do If we don't have a UV light.

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You may put it in sun for an extended period. But in some areas of the world, like where I am, the UV from the sun is not sufficient. Small UV lamps for nails or even a mini handheld flashlight UV lamp work excellent!

    How did you prevent the wings from rolling up on the edges?

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It might help with curling, if you put a thin layer on top and set that before adding a thicker layer. I’ve had them do this. Also the “hotter” your lamp cures the uv the more likely it is to curl. Try a lower setting. It might take longer. I know my uv flashlight is “hotter” than my nail lamp and will cause curling.

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I almost forgot. I bought a small laminating machine and laminate the wings first. Thicker mm helps it curl less. But the above still applies. If you heat that plastic too much it can curl too! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I have found that: if resin makes paper curl I can put an iron on non steam setting and sandwich between parchment (baking paper). I warm it up until it’s moldable. Then I place the sandwiched resin, still warm and put it in a book with weight on top - for as long as it takes to cool off helped with the curling. I’m not sure how this would work with more delicate things, like the wings. It does work with paper. I’ve only tested this with thin layers of hard-type resin. You’d want to flatten like this before adding more. And you can usually even the surface out using this method.

    Do they change the color with the time?

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As they are sealed inside of laminate, the wings themselves will not change colors as the resin is applied. As far as the UV resin, I don’t have any pieces that are older than a few years so I’m not sure whether UV resin has a tendency to yellow over time like regular resin tends to. It’s not two part, it just activates with the UV. But I would imagine that it holds up well under the sun, unlike regular resin. 2 part resin, if it’s from a good manufacturer usually comes with a UV protectant in the two chemicals that when mixed harden. But they are two different products. In fact, I like UV resin because it’s super easy to keep working with until you’re ready for it to set up, as compared to 2-part where it sets up in a fairly short time and leaves less working time. However it is more expensive to work with UV and you need light to set the design.

    But do u HAVE to laminate first? I have 2 butterflies to practice on. They died in the greenhouse

    • @Mandakyns2
      @Mandakyns2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teeko Train that’s a great question!
      I didn’t want to run the risk of damaging the butterfly as it was given to me and was sentimental to the person who gave it to me. The scales on the wings are almost magical and regular (2-part) resin seems to do something to it that darkens it or may discolor. I’ve seen one person that seems to have luck just going straight into it with UV resin. If they are plentiful for you, then please experiment and let me know the result.
      However, after the trip to OfficeDepot, I decided to invest in a laminator of my own from Scotch brand. They run about $22 at Walmart and lamination pouches are about $13. Run a test through before putting your lovelies in and do be sure to check that it’s coming out other side properly. I had one sheet crinkle in the machine.
      I also have my feelers out to get some winged insects that have died of natural causes, because I don’t want to harm any. My trips to the local greenhouses here have been unfruitful. Going to ask middle schools that do bug projects to donate after for art projects

      I did some of these for my sister in law at Christmas. You CAN do it without laminating it. But they will curl, so be prepared for that. It makes it a little frustrating

      This is my question too. Thanks for the answer. I wonder if putting a layer of modpodge before resin would work?
