"The Bean the Dynamite Story ▸ Duck or Woodpecker?!"
In this video we'll be taking a look at Bean the Dynamite, a character first introduced in 'Sonic the Fighters' in 1996. I'll be taking a look at Bean's major appearances in the Sonic franchise, taking a look at Bean's extended family (and the controversies surrounding them!) and finally I'll be addressing the central question: is Bean a duck or a woodpecker?

The Sonic News Network lists his original video game counterpart and his IDW counterpart as being a woodpecker, and since I consider the games to be the franchise's canon, I can personally confirm that Bean is indeed a woodpecker.
@@bachilles3285 And the source of that information is "SEGA Official Books’ Fighters Megamix Official Guide", despite the word "official" being in the title, I'm pretty sure they guy writing it just _assumed_ Bean was a woodpecker because of his pecking attacks.
By the way I think bean is a wood pecker since there's the chance Bob married a wood pecker
I like the idea that Bean is a duck/woodpecker hybrid, with his dad Bin being a duck and his mom a woodpecker. It's certainly feasible in Sonic's world at least, with Bean himself probably not bothering to specify due to being immature and just wanting to get to the fireworks.
He isn't a woodpecker or a duck. He's a dynamite.

Maybe the game's character designers had a weird interest in hybrid animals? Nack the Weasel/Fang the Sniper is, according to Japanese data sheets, actually a hybrid between a weasel and a jerboa - hence the weird jagged tail! I mean, it's generally hard to tell given that all the animal friends tend to run off of the supremely malleable "Felix the Cat" art style.
Yeah makes sense. Bean might well be part-duck and part-woodpecker.
@@JohnnyVector they also do that with the Archie comics version of Princess Sally Acorn from Sonic Satam Cartoon as she is usually referred to as either a squirrel or a chipmunk though I always refer to her as a chipmunk because of her short tail but apparently her father King Maximilian is a Squirrel and her mother is a Chipmunk
Fang is supposed to be part wolf. I think weasel is just an American reference.
It's possible Bin's wife was a woodpecker and Bean just took a bit after her.
Personally, I like to think that Bean is a Woodpecker-Duck hybrid.
Afterall, we do know that Bin the Duck is his father, but we don't know who the mother is.
And the fact that he has qualities and traits of both ducks and woodpeckers also supports this. (quacking and pecking, A tail similar to other cartoon woodpecker woody, while also resembling Bin's tail.)

I'd love SEGA to reveal that Bean has been a parrot all along when he appears next. Just to confuse even more.
Bean does remind me of José Carioca. I'd love to see some fan art of José lighting up a cigar off one of Bean's bombs.

I always thought Bean the Dynamite was a Hawk due to his similarites with Jet, but no, he's a Duck because his father was Bin from Dynamite Dux A Game Nobody knows about, and was Bean was also slated to be a Woodpecker.

I have the official Japanese guide for Sonic Jam which released in 1997; it has a brief profile page for other Sonic characters and under Bean and Bark's entry, it says Bean is a bomb-using duck. Because of this I was under the impression he was a duck. I don't know which guide is correct?
Oooohh interesting. Weird how guides released so close together have such bizarre contradictions.

I’m surprised how you didn’t mention that Bean was also Jet’s cousin in the Archie comics
Bean's affinity for explosives and kicking weirdly puts him in a similar spot as Bomberman. Both unfortunately still missing in action in present day. Bean also being a hybrid of duck and woodpecker is also similar to Fang, who is canonically half jerboa and half wolf.
As he is a woodpecker it would have been hilarious if he gets pissed off when people refer to him as a duck
Okay so…I’m pretty confident in this. Bean is actually a canary. First of all, canary is also the name of a type of bean, hinting at his name, and canary’s were used by miners (who used explosives) to tell for danger. Just by his name alone it’s pretty clear to see he was intended to be a canary.
I get the feeling that Bean may have initially supposed to have been Bin, but was probably changed in order to differentiate him on screen from Sonic, colour-wise.
Also worth noting is that Bin was the alias of long-serving AM2 coder, Satoshi Mifune, who'd been with the team since Space Harrier, and was the main coder of Dynamite Dux AND the planner/programmer of the Virtua Striker series.
So Bean's Father Bin like Bean, was an alias for a Coder for AM2. Like Father Like Son

I wonder if they chose green for Bean because there weren’t really any prominent game characters at the time of his introduction who bore that color besides Vector as Scourge was still referred to as Anti-Sonic in the comics at the time of the games’ releases and Sonic Underground’s Manic wasn’t introduced yet.
Yeah that sounds like a good theory. Maybe Vector wasn't chosen for Sonic the Fighters because he was so big and lanky he would've looked too weird next to everyone else.

Bean probably is a woodpecker, but due to his father being a duck, he’s learned from his father and started to say “quack!”.
13:33 it's also worth noting that Bean in the Archie comics as well as the rest of the hooligans are portrayed as bounty hunters who worked for the highest bidder often being paired with his best friend Bark the Polar Bear
I went and reread Beans appearance in IDW and nothing says he is a woodpecker. Nothing says what his race is at all and they even reference dynamite dux with the two ducks from that game appearing over his head when he gets dizzy. The Wiki for Bean in IDW probably just calls him a woodpecker cause thats the only official source we have. (I am pro Duck if you can't tell)
I did refer to the Wiki for the IDW as I don't have the comics myself. It's a shame that Wikis can be so unreliable. Thanks for adding some valuable info to the discussion!
@@JohnnyVector well I would say it’s not really inaccurate since there is a source it’s just not stated in the comic. I asked the writer of the comic If in IDW he is a duck or a woodpecker since the IDW comics are overlooked by sega. So hopefully on one of his QNAs in the future it gets answered

@@chaossabermoo9697 Sega and the person in charge of Sonic has no clue on what they’re actually doing with the series since Colors. If they did, we wouldn’t have those asinine statements to rival Dragon Ball’s frequent power level changes and Star Trek TOS’ contradictions with every TV series and movies that came after it up to Enterprise.
Considering that Fighters came out in '96 it's surprising that Fleetway never did anything with these characters. Maybe they just didn't know enough about them? Though I'm sure in Fleetway's version Kitching would have made Bean a Green Swan or something!
Given the way they depicted Nack as a cunning bastard, I imagine he’d depict Bean as a PG Trevor Phillips and Bark as being a Kevin Nash/Diesel parody.

I’m enjoying these videos very much. You will be doing a video on Fang the Sniper right? I’m sure you know he was actually initially going to be called Nack but because Knuckles name sounded similar in Japanese they opted for another name. In Japanese Knuckles name is pronounced as Nakkuruzu. I mention this because I want you to share this next part if you are going to make a video on Fang. In “Sonic the Screensaver” there is icons that can be used for the PC and the ones for Knuckles are labeled as “KNACK” and “KNACS”. I think that can be a good example to show the similarity between their names.

There will be plenty more information for Fang since his designer, Shinichi Higashi, has a Twitter and often posts new information and concept art. I think at this point most of us know that Fang is a jerboa but here’s something interesting I wanted to share with you in case you didn’t know. When Higashi revealed concept art showing Fang being much smaller than Sonic someone pointed that out to which he revealed that when he was making the sprites for Fang he was too small to draw any facial expressions. It’s pretty much safe to say you will make a video on Bark too right? I want to share some information on him too. Did you know he was originally planned to be an orangutan. Sonic Retro user “Vertekins” translated an interview which came from Sega Saturn Magazine 3/22 1996 Vol 5 Page 218 which apparently reveals that : archive.vn/CwSf2#selection-1741.1-1740.2

Nah. Fang was only ever described as a wolf-weasel hybrid in some sources. His designer just based him off of a jerboa. So, as far as Fang goes, he's either a weasel according to the American and European canon, a wolf-weasel hybrid according to the Japanese canon, or a jerboa according to his creator.
Well he does look like Plucky Duck from Tiny Toon Adventures also if you know his girlfriend Shirley the Loon who is a Loon not a duck, but she look like a duck.

What we see is a mechanical suit. The true Bean is, in fact, an anthropomorphic stick of dynamite created by Bin.

It could be that Bean is a hybrid, but identifies more with his woodpecker heritage rather than with his duck one. Kind of like how Shadow identifies with his Hedgehog heritage rather than his Black Arm one.

I like to think that Bean in a hybrid who perhaps is more of a woodpecker genetically, but visually takes after his duck father. Fang was stated to be a jerboa-wolf hybrid, so it's not out of the question.

I though Bean was a Mix between a duck and a Woodpecker. Similar to how Fang is a mix between a Wolf and a Jerboa. I just figured one of his parents was a Woodpecker since his other parent is a duck from Dyamite dux.
A few people have shared a theory similar to that. I think it makes the most sense and pleases both Duck and Woodpecker camps.

Bark is on the list but as his history is pretty similar to Bean's, I think I'll try a few different characters first before looping back to Bark.

The problem with the comic portrayals is that official sources said Bean was a friend of Sonic's, so the mercenary angle doesn't quite fit the villain for hire thing.
I believe it's a woodpecker. He lived in a forest that was invaded by an army of bird robots and destroyed them with bombs. At least that's how it was in the beta prototype for the Game Gear...

Honestly I think that Bean is not a duck nor a woodpecker but both of them because actually hybrid do exist in the Sonic's universe for example Fang is described as a weasel and a wolf (yes he's also called Nack The WEASEL but according to my research he's actually both a weasel and a wolf) so sens Fang is both a weasel and a wolf so MAYBE Bean is both a duck and a woodpecker because everything pointed out 2 separate answers so maybe this 2 answers are just 1 answer the all time

I personally think of him as a duck. Partly because of his family heritage, but mostly because I just like calling him “a dynamite duck”. I wouldn’t put it past him to peck at people because he’s just that odd.

Okay, looks like I have to write this manually under every eng video about this question: are you really sure Bin and Pin are ducks? Are re you sure that the word in the game's name pronounced like this? There two dots over the U, and in many languages they are not for nothing. Also X instead of KS. Many non-english speakers pronounce Düx as "d(y)ooks" (i.e. as the word 'dukes'), and it also make sense - look at all those guns and weaponry and what's going on, they are literally dukes-freaking-nukems, except years before the actual Duke Nukem. And is there any direct statement or hint in the game's text that Bin and Pin are ducks? I haven't seen, thou I don't know what's in manual(s)
So I too believe it's absolutely not the word 'ducks' in the Dynamite Düx name, and there's actually no direct strong info about Bin and Pin's species

I feel like this would cause questions of how Bean is related to Bin, but I think I found a source that showed Bean's mother, and what species is she? Woodpecker. His father? A duck. So, it would explain why he's fast, pecks, and quacks. Also would explain his pointy bill. I'd actually like to see Bean in action again, but hey, there's always fan-games.
