  • Video driving my Land Rover Discovery 4 on a green lane route at Beild Drove, Little Downham, near Ely in Cambridgeshire, UK. Standard vehicle with OEM Pirelli Scorpion Zero M+S tyres on 20" wheels.
An interactive map of the route is at www.google.com...
Remember to follow good green lane practice, check the route is open and no TROs in force. This route is suitable for a regular 4x4 with road tyres so long as the ground is dry and firm. It's always advised to go with someone else.

This might seem like a dumb question but how do you know where it’s legal to drive?

Not a dumb question at all - in fact, a really important one.
Firstly, you need an Ordnance Survey map and look for the "by-ways open to all traffic" (BOATs) - these are the green lanes on which it's legal to drive - effectively like any other road. Second, you need to check for temporary closure orders. These are often put in place when conditions are poor, or during the winter, to prevent the green lane being churned up and damaged. You need to check with the local authority (county council) for their definitive map, though here in Cambridgeshire they're also pretty good at putting up signs and updating the Roadworks UK site with closures. Always, always avoid driving on a green lane when there's any risk of damaging the surface, regardless of whether or not it's legal to be there.
As it's not really a good idea to drive green lanes on your own at all, especially if you're not familiar with the surface, it's probably best to go with a local 4x4 club. And magazines like Land Rover owner often publish green lane routes, including the level of difficulty to pass. Many green lanes (BOATs) are very short, so for a decent drive you need to find several in the same area.
