- INEOS are planning on overhauling Manchester United's recruitment strategy with a focus on data, youth and removing the responsibility from Erik ten Hag in what is a much needed revolution of our transfer system.
In this video, Sam runs through all the changes that have happened with the data science team at United, what we can learn from it all and what we can expect to happen this summer.

Transforming Man United's entire transfer strategy I'd say is one of the most important jobs for Ratcliffe and INEOS. What do you think about the concept of shifting towards a focus on younger signings that are data driven and less responsibility on the manager? I'd say it is exactly what we need to see..
No son. The most important thing is remembering our history which you've totally neglected. Yesterday 6th Feb Munich disaster and not a single word from you. Go support another team .
Less responsibility for the manager?? Christ in Premier League the manager is the brain of each team and his responsibility is to construct a team , to select players who must come and who must leave , etc. A manager without responsibility is useless.
Olise is very talented but so was Martial. I get similar vibes about injuries and possibly character or personality anyway.
That “laid back” attitude?
Agree on the attitude
One player I think would be an interesting look would be Kephren Thuram. 22 years of age and he is a tall, strong and complete midfielder. Interesting that he also plays at Nice which could make it easier for United to strike a deal.
We are freaking lucky that Hojlund is a United Fan…this boy is going to do wonders in the next 10years if he keeps injuryfree
😢😢
Unfortunately some we dont have many players who plays for the club but plays only for money and fame only...
Madrid have also clearly decided to focus on young, developing, dynamic players who are already exceptional but will become even better. Mbappe is a combination of youth and galactico; getting him without a fee is an astonishing coup
Mbappe is not young but as a United fan we need more players who play for the badge instead of players who are expensive
@@jakegareth Ya I wouldn't be in favour of signing him tbh, we want young dedicated players, not more massive egos
@@shaneodwyer6132 Massive egos on massive wages
Madrid has a couple of perks Manchester teams can't offer: the weather, the city, the 14 UCL trophies, an easier league. What they do not have is the well oiled Citygroup football machine with Pep at the wheel.
Football is crazy at the moment.
And Madrid ain't exactly paying cheap for their players: 100 million on Jude, 72 million euros on Endrick, 45 million euros on Vini and Rodrygo each (on 2017-18 markets). Their real still for me was Arda Guller for 20million. And do not forget they burned 100 million on Hazard.
Let's see what's going to happen.
@@_orodrigofernandes its because of the massive expense of elite football that they're so in favour of the super league, they need that goldmine to compete with the PL, Barca and the Italians too
Nice one Sam. Maybe Hojlund was a result of luck via the law of averages. However I am glad we did get him. What INEOS does can only raise the hit rate.
Our scouts aren't that bad, but we still overpaid for him, and that's down to John Murtough.
Not really. The sole reason why you let manager brings on players he’s familiar with is that they would be guaranteed success. But apparently we have a donkey like ten hag who brings in horrific ex players. The only good player he brought in was lisandro
We paid what he was worth.
@@ShaneBoy no we didn't, we overpaid. I think this was already covered in the Athletic's deep-dive report by Laurie Whitwell.
You do understand that the open market determines the price ?
You can't blame officials for clubs calling their price ?
Michael injured olisie is just another martial
Olise got that laid back attitude of martial.
Younger signings is a must Sam, but your correct in saying they need to be brought in to the club the right way through professional analysts etc :)
Professional analysts, most fans could do it , Neto ,Andre ,Todibo, would be the first 3 I would recruit.
eze, olise
This makes a lot of sense.
It's like you might have 300 centre backs but you can't go and look at every single one of them playing live, so you use the data and narrow it down to 20.
Then you have humans manually choose a few of those who have the right personality, and you might be left with 5 potentials, so you then contact those players and clubs to see who is interested.
And if it doesn't work out then you just go further down the data list to look at the next 20 players.
I prefer Pedro Neto to Olise, they have some diferences, but as portuguese and for what i have been watching these years for the two of them, Neto is the right player for us
That folk is a banger
Average
Pedro Neto is injury prone
Just like olise who just came bk recently and is now injured again!!! But to be honest neto is a way better winger
Great content as always
Great video Sam....better and better mate.
Love you're passion for our great team.
Very interesting and makes alot of sense, data isnt the only criteria but t s essential in making good decisions and having a clear plan, recruiting the right plauyers who can play for united the way unitred play is key ..
I love the fact that you balanced your session on data and explained data is not everything. Its more about the mind analyzing it
How are young players (with potential) from other premier league clubs or top clubs from around Europe a good option for united? They end up paying £50-80m and any one of them can be another Harry Maguire or Anthony. They should be looking at smaller clubs and buying £25-30m players who are young with potential like Brighton do (look at João Pedro this season) he's doubled in value already. Clubs like Brighton, Dortmund, RB Leipzig are what Utd should be trying to emulate. They don't tend to buy star players or hot prospects from premier league clubs or top European clubs. I'd say Julian Alvarez is a good example of how we should be signing. He's pretty much completed football since he's moved to City. Only the league cup left to win and he's got every winners medal he's competed for. Not a break the bank signing but a quality team player and probably tripled in value already
Im with u 100% mate
Ragnick recommended Alvarez also
Yeah people like Roony from Copenhagen or that Redondo lad. Not super expensive gambles with the English tax, prem tax and united tax
@@g_od2080 16yo Endrick from Palmeiras who Real Madrid have signed who will become like R9 and was €35m
At a club like United you need a mix. You can’t just sign a bunch of unproven 30 million teenagers, we’re too big of a club for that. You need to supplement that with proven quality in positions of need + younger players with absolute elite potential.
Thank you for the news 😊
Sensible to diminish Erik's control of transfer signings (for very obvious reasons).
I totally agree with anything you have just said.
Those last 30 seconds of the vid is extremely important. You’re absolutely right. It should be about profiles and not names
Don't blame ten haag for Antony he was not responsible for negotiating
He surely must have been asked (when the fee got ridiculous) "do you still want him?" He should have said NO. Notwithstanding that, was he a good purchase at any price?
@@richardjones8699that’s why he was willing to get Cody gakpo
@@richardjones8699I know what you mean but if you think back it was literally Antony or nobody. It was so close to deadline. They f*****d around and panic bought casimero and Antony after the first two losses. even this summer. hojlund .and amrabat were very late signed.
Hope ineos get this right. Hopefully it's a good finish to the season and united have a good transfer window. Great video Sam
This all makes a lot of sense. It’s how grown up organisations behave. The costs of mistakes has increased a lot. We can’t afford more fails like Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Bebe, or Antony. We need to ensure we get the right people in at the right price and we do that with data. I work in a data-rich environment and it’s key to absolutely everything we do.
Keen to know what you do ? Since it's data rich ?
@@garthmorgan4493how would I know since I haven’t seen the data? Also I’m not an expert on sports science or the data surrounding it.
@Zharkov1969A you said you work in a data rich environment and I was curious to know what you did.
I don't know why you coming for me on sports science
@@garthmorgan4493I work in the public sector; I used to teach people how to analyse data. Now I just organise their training.
Looking promising!
It makes sense
So long as we are able to supplement the new strategy of bringing in younger players with more experienced ones as well to help alongside the youth then I'm fine with it. I don't want us to be just another Chelsea in three or four years time.
Data is playing a big part in modern football.
Has been for 30 years
You should watch Rios inteview with Mr.Gill
The Rio who said Qatar imminent possibly tonight in June
It’s not even a great interview. He says what he has to say, avoided any negativity towards the glazers and just said sir jim is a positive step. Other stuff was kind of irrelevant.
I will believe it when i see it.
Todibo , Braithwaite, tiago santos, thuram, olise, sesko those type of players I would love
I'm sure you've covered this before but I think the most important aspect of transfers Utd need to get back is selling players.
FFP is going to be challenging with the Utd Tax otherwise; which needs to be deflated too
Paul Mitchell would be a footballing gold mine for us, in this new environment.
And we need another winger like Olise or strengthen the back line? Identify a replacement for Shaw, CB and RB
I don’t get why United fans dislike Shaw so much . He’s a fantastic player . Missed him this season. In my opinion his replacement has just been loaned with option to buy to benfica
Why replace dalot? He’s great and wan bissaka has been covering well
Luke Shaw's long term replacement is Harry Amass who trained with the first team today
@@chrissilvester5663
agree.
@@darrenjones7607 Shaw is good, but how old is he now? How many times have we missed him due to injury? Read that Ineos will review contracts for players above 30. Even Bruno contract (expire in 2 years) is being reviewed
Sam, that photo of Sir Dave, that you put up, just realised where I first saw him, he is “Brains” of Thunderbirds…😂😂. No offence intended. Cheers!
Good sam
We need to start identifying personality trades also football data only does so much
As a guy who works in data, this is my kinda video haha would be a dream to work in that data team
I think man united should prefer more on scalvini rather than jarrad branthwaite and also writz should be given more preference than olise
🔰💯👀 Let's goooo Utd SJR C'mon bring that Change 💪🏽
Nice top lad
United also need to sign players who are experienced, especially in the midfield and back line having a young team is a very risky strategy.
Calling olise proven is a stretch he's looked decent at times, hardly ripping it up. Plus there's concerns about injuries. Branthwaite has only broken through this season. Yeah he's looked good. But people said the same about Godfrey. Proven is a stretch.
Sam you're right
There are going to be major changes and I see us completing transfers earlier in the window as opposed to last minute signings like we usually do.
In regards to Olise I'd be a bit wary because this season he's been injured quite frequently, being overplayed and used by Hodgson.
Excited for the future and hope we get an announcement on the new DOF and Head of Recruitment by the end of this month itself. GGMU
That would be a step up in our game, for sure. BUT! when we are in a league against Pep's City... I honestly don't know who or what can stop them.
Have you seen them playing? Did you take a look at their squad?
We would really need something MAJOR to happen to beat them in 38 games league.
But let's see what happens in the future...
Sam... It would be LEGENDARY if you made a show from the hospital !!!
Sounds very exciting. We will be making football decisions not commercial decisions.
I can see us replacing Rashford with Olise
the new stadium will fit all city fans in the world
The problem with these social media influencers is that they hype up everything and make the fans expect everything to be fast and easy.
nice one sam.. but im so sorry.. i just so curious what was the data result that lead us to get Onana.. 😅😅😅
Data doesn't tell you much, if anything, about the character of the player, their attitude in training, whether they will gel with other players, the potential of a young signing etc. Those things are arguably more important than what data can tell us.
You also need an intelligence network. Utd used to have that but no more for some reason.
The kind of insight that would prevent a Sanchez debacle, which is probably the most costly blunder Utd have ever made.
Personalities is a big one
We need players who want to be at Utd and will be professional in all areas
I have a bad feeling about olise reminds me of martial, injury prone, laid back attitude, young,i prefer amad gets a chance than signing olise
Is that how Real found Vini and Rodriygo, and Camavinga and Tchoumeni?
Its the quality of the data that is important you can have the best processing in the world but Crap in Crap out still applies.
Data is a tool, nothing more nothing less.
The reason it's so important is that using all the tools at your disposal is how you ensure good signings. And if you're not using the best tools you're a step behind your competitors.
Of course none of that matters if the people utilizing the data aren't using it or are using it wrong.
Olise is a good player but we need to give Smad a chance he can be as good or better, and we really need a midfielder that can create chances, someone like Paqueta who is in his prime and tested in EPL
i'm glad you're not in charge of transfers at utd. United needs a dribbling winger who can pass the ball which Olise isn't . He is a transition winger.Exactly like Rashford.
We need a hard tackler to galvanize the team and raise team spirit. We need a left back who can defend and cross the ball.
Yessssssssssss
Make sure about the character of our signings.
The player's prices are ridiculous these days. Remember when players like RVP cost less than 30 million? Nowadays, we have to pay above 50 million for unproven young players for their potential. The only way to stop this inflation is for big clubs to stop spending and focus on their own youth academy. Only then, the smaller clubs will stop asking for ridiculous amounts of money for unproven talents
That’s the market place. When silly money got injected it sent the market up.
tbh i think another thing is important right now is player's injury record...like olise i dont think utd should sign him...not because the pontential high price but his recent injury record is concerning...4 months out last year because of hamstring injury then another hamstring injury last week & he will be out for another 2 month...that is already a red flag & it will be a risky signing
Bro we need world class youngster!
New drinking game, take a shot for every time Sam says the word ‘data’😂😂
If United had followed through in time for the few top recruits the coach was really after we would have a better team instead Ten Hag had CL and Premier league So he had to build a deeper squad with leftover transfers no one else wanted unless they were pushing the price up to push United into trouble with FFP.
Other clubs may get a massive shock and give United a chance for top 4.
I would take Petro Neto over Olise any day of the week he can play on the right on the left, central and he is only 23
Or let’s get nico Williams Neto is injury prone
Neto is arguably the fastest player in the Premier League, and you don’t need data to tell you that, although Martinelli maybe just as fast. Speed, of course, is just one data point. You need to look at successful dribbles, the danger level created by runs or checking, completed passes among many other variables, some of which are captured in FotMab or Sofascore, some that are not.
I also believe their mental strength should be taken into consideration when signing these young talented players, to play for Utd, not only being a special talent you need to be a special type of man.
Branthwaite, Olise and Amadou Onana would be perfect signings for us
Not branthwaite pls
@@khobbynash6382 what is your preference
not olise...a potential to become like martial
Onana donkey? no please
Hope ww get better next season
signing more young players is something we need
Clubs like brentford and Brighton use the moneyball tactic, where you analyse unknown players purely on I'm depth contextual statistics. That's how the ivan toneys, alexis macallisters etc were found, why don't we do this?
Unfortunately, so do Chelsea. That's not worked out to well.
Only it’s hard to see a players character on a graph!
Data + Great Character and Personality + Great Coaching + Correct Playstyle = Great Players + Great Team
Liverpool's rise had a lot to do with having a best in class data scientist, who was a particle physics scientist at CERN. There was an interview where he told how based on his numbers, a certain Mohammad Salah should be Liverpool's #1 target. Klopp didn't like the answer so he was told to recheck the data
what is his name?
They should focus on younger signings but also get players on frees and last year of contract. Whilst buying players with low buy out clauses. The most important thing is buying players that have the correct attitude. ETH is slowly getting rid of players that are problematic hopefully in the summer he can clear the rest out. That's more important than who we bring in going forward! Pellestri,Hannibal,Williams,DVDB, Sancho, Amad if he's not in the first team picture by the end of the season, should be sold, then bring in Tobido and chiesa, and sell Lindelof and Rashford, then sign another CB and Evan Ferguson, then sell Maguire and mcktomminay and bring in a midfielder, sell Anthony and greenwood unless they gonna keep him, then bring in a backup for rw and lw. Then move on bisaka and bring RB and if we sell Alvaro Fernandez and Malacia we could get another lb then maybe look at the keeper situation!
Bastoni can be our martinez back there...n barella for cm
How goes it your win nothing with kids !!! A great policy go for em
It's all right saying to take the decision away from Ten Hag but what happens if he says no I'm leaving then ? & What Top World class manger is going to let others make the decision on his player's ??
You can identify many good signings but if you over pay for the transfer fee it builds expectations they cant live up to. If you give them life changing wages straight away the persons motivation can be wrecked.
Younger player you won't have to pay 350 000 per week
Elise cannot play ETH ball. We already have a tall winger.
But will Ten Has walk if he loses any transfer power?
how you analyze the data is more important than the data itself, bad analytics can be your downfall if all you do is rely on data
we need a defensive overhaul our defenders are so injury prone and we are left with no one
if you do data right, SG union in belgium is proof.. owner brighton , union promoted to jupiler pro, and as data get right trainer & players they play on top.... 80% of team sold year after again play in the top... data can be right if it get used... there are Managers does do data but not in the right way =)
United can win any game even compete for silverware..but a lack of a winning mentality.. like Rooney and CR7 with scholes and others ..those was players that was so addicted to win .. that fire of united is gone .. if that winning mentality can come back even with no signing this upcoming summer transfers they can still be the best team in the world - from my view -Rashford or Bruno can still compete for Ballin'dor if only United players know who and what they are ...Glory Man united
We have been run to the ground
Branthwaith is proven to do what in the prem exactly? This is like when we bought Jones after one ok season.
Mainoo, Garnacho, hojlund, bruno and casemiro must play everytime...
I don't think we should predict anything and we should wait for new directorate of football and other ppl coming in the board
Olise is good but injury prone
What special players are out there to replace the talented players that were written off by Fans and Those Fans?
Isnt this what chelsea tried to do? Data youth etc?
United need two CBs I really like the CB from Atalanta. GIORGIO
SCALVINI. He will be on top Italian club if we don’t pay for him this summer. But united absolutely need two. One proven and one young
He gave them a list but they was too slow
Maguire was PL proven and look how he ended up, I think English CB’s are a hit or miss. Non of the top teams today have English CB’s
Sam I'd tread carefully with Olise. He seems to be a bit injury prone. We have enough of that in the squad already at the minute.
I hope Brathwaite does not become another Maguire, i think he's over hyped and should not coast more than 25m to 45m max
