Fantastic course, thank you! In Anand's game, you show a few mating lines that are quite long and require one or more sacrifices. Do strong players compute all the variations before going for this kind of attack, or do they just know that with all the x-rays and an exposed king, tactics will arise? In my games (1800 rapid lichess, looking to play some classical OTB soon), should I just go for it or should I try to compute until I know I will get an advantage? Thank you again!
I am wandering the same. I believe they do calculate otherwise we would see some huge blunders in tournaments (say if the attack does not get to any concrete result), also keep in mind that Anand's opponent resigned so the opponent did calculated too the checkmate thread with the required sacrifices and must have concluded that its winning for White, either checkmate or huge advantage. I believe it is required to keep a cool head and continue in calculating the lines too see it to the end... In my games (rapid 1350 - 1400), when I analyze with the engine after the game, I find that I have seen the lines that the computer suggest but did not believed in them because I did not see past the sacrifice or did not believed I would be better in that line.
