    I've always known you should follow through but I think what I was really doing was like you said just hitting the cueball. I tricked myself into thinking I was following through when I stopped dead. Seeing this explained properly and even just pushing my cue through the ball as little as an inch further helped massively. Went to my table and bam the screw back and top spin is massive. Thanks a lot from Essex

    Very interesting. A well-struck backspin shot often just feels better. It feels effortless and I often associate that with a looser grip. Perhaps that looser grip is reducing rotation (like you mentioned) and giving a better timing, and so more backspin.

    • @reczy
      @reczy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I always find the more I relax when cuing, the more backspin I get.

    • @miff227
      @miff227 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reczy in table tennis, arguably the spinniest of all ball sports, you slice under the ball, even looping under the ball, to give as much contact time as possible, with as much tangential speed as possible.
      When I try to relate that to snooker, I think the cue flexing down and under the white is advantageous, as well as the tip shape creating that "loop under" type affair (the angle changing as you go through the shot, in table tennis created by the angle of the bat, in snooker the size and shape of the tip).
      accelerating through the ball would also help, not sure how practical that is, but certainly maintaining a speed is better than a poke that slows down.
      So, I think being relaxed allows the cue to flex down more, maybe allowing a momentary slow down on impact (your hand flesh creating a soft bushing with the butt) which also helps maximize contact time of tip/ball

    Great video as usual, mate! The way you described that feeling when your timing on a shot is perfect was so spot on. Like a liquid it is. Funny thou, I have noticed that little wobble or dip/lift-up of the cue when people play longdisatnce deepnscrew shots on professionals, others, and also on myself a lot, and to be honest, I don't think it is necceceraly a costy thing in execution of the shot. Might just have something to do with a naturally relaxed grip throughout the shot allowing the cue to be on it's way, depending on the shot and the players style, after it's over with contacting the cueball. Might just be me, but that but always felt natural with certain shots for me.
    Thanks for an other deep video on the game :D
    Keep it up, mate!

    When I grab my cue tight to play a screw shot with power cue ball always jumps (miscues)
    While if I hold it loose and play really slow/softly the backspin is dramatic.

  • @miff227
    @miff227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the thing is, at 0:57, your "long follow through" shot is striking the white about twice as far below the centre line than the "short follow through" shot. So yeah, you're gonna get more backspin.
    I get that follow through makes you hit the white differently, but after the white is no longer touching the cue, follow through has zero effect on the white. If you hit the white identically, if your cue was stopped by a brick wall after the white stops contacting the tip, the white would react identically to if there was no wall.

    Great video here dude. You have said many times that changing [a particular part of] a technique can cause you to miss so dont change it or it should avoided. And I know you give advice based upon what you have found during your experiments and experiences, however, would you also say that changing something can be uncomfortable at first and we may miss but if we persist and retrain our brains, then we can find we unlock the potential that was previously unavailable. I say this because, for your example it (wrist turning) can affect spin/accuracy. So no change would mean a plateau.. right? Or would this be something to work on over time? Or after more experience is gained. You must have sorted it out yourself as I notice you have wayyyy better cue power now than ever. Sorry for the essay pal. Best way i could think to word it. Cheers

    hi, great video as always, I would suggest a challenge that I use to see if my screw back timing is good: cue ball on the black spot, pink on the pink spot. hit the pink ball an screw back to the bottom cushion and see where the pink ends up. then you can compare your quality of the stroke. of course remove the cue ball after it hits the rail if the pink is going towards the cue ball. greetings from mario from schwerin,germany

    • @snooker9773
      @snooker9773 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a good test as the cue ball is too close to the cushion, where the cue is too sloped to develop quality backspin.

    • @marioopool
      @marioopool 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@snooker9773 sometimes you have to develope a good spin even if you are close to rail. its just a specific setup you can compare your screw back quality. you can setup anything else but the idea is to see how far the object ball runs. the shorter the better your screw back force is at lower speed

    I struggle with the distance shots and longer mid range with getting any backspin. The cueball just stuns and freezes. Top spin is much easier to play. I've been using a tallisman tip recently and it's so hard it doesn't feel like it grips the ball enough to generate the required spin. I might change tips.

    I play pool and I'm always impressed how low good players can actually strike the cueball without miscueing...and they strike it with full power.
    My drawshot is ok for a beginner I guess but as soon as I try to go really low on the cueball I might miscue. And when I add more power I might kill a bystander.
    I drives me nuts that moving a wooden stick back and forth can be so difficult.

      There are a lot of reasons. Your bridge hand, bridge hand shoulder, eyes, chin, chest, grip hand shoulder, grip hand, pivot leg are all variables to straight cueing. They have to be properly aligned so that the cue stays on the aim line when you pull back and deliver your cue. Your need to adjust these variables and test again and again to ensure they remain unchanged even when you strike hard. This is a much tougher journey than people thought and unfortunately there is no shortcut to this.

    • @snooker9773
      @snooker9773 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reviewswithhughes No need to practise on a real snooker table. You can set up two cardboard dummies on a dinning table, one with a vertical line standing at the far end, and one with a hole standing at the near end. Pile up books to match the height of a snooker table. The size of the hole should be slightly bigger than the cuetip. The far one serves as the object ball, the near one serves as the cue ball. Aim at the vertical line and cue through the hole. Once the cue action is completed, use one eye to check if the cuetip points right at the vertical line. If it fails, adjust all the variables until you can accurately hit the vertical line even using much power. Practise it every day until it becomes a habit.
