Watch a Backgammon Board Being Made (No Talking ASMR)

  • Hi all,
    This project is another one of my weekend workshop experiments where I try out a bit of marquetry for the first time. There are a lot of things I'd do differently if I had to do this again - more stable plywood, bonding each side of the board beforehand together instead of shooting them after the fact of their gluing, and using an accurate table saw to cut the mitres instead of sanding them. I don't have an accurate table saw (NEVER buy the Triton entry level ones if you want to cut anything with any degree of accuracy!) so I used a sander which got dusty. And while we're on things you shouldn't get - the hinges I used were very soft metal, which was a pain to screw in.
    I realise you might want to lookup some of the tools I used in this video if you want to try your own board. The most important tools here were my scalpel and probably my sander, but I also used hand planes, SKIL saw, drills and screwdrivers. I'd recommend SKIL stuff for DIY use, they're perfect for this kind of project. And Lie Nielsen didn't let me down as per usual for hand tools. Here's a handy list of the bits I used for this build:
    Screwdriver: www.screwfix.com/p/skil-sd1e3...
    Saw: www.screwfix.com/p/skil-sw1e3...
    Drill: www.screwfix.com/p/skil-cd1u3...

    You did a fabulous job Daisy! Enjoyed every minute of it. It's been so long since I've played backgammon I think I've forgotten how. This made me want tot learn again.

    I still am amazed at your incredible talent and skill. Very well thought out, very well laid out, precise execution. My father was a master craftsman and I used to sit for hours and watch him work. Now this was in the 50’s and he used very similar techniques as you. Same tools and similar woods and templates. I’m in my 70’s now and watching you brings back some memories but at the same time I see differences that make your work unique. Never stop doing what you do.

    Fantastic work there Daisy. Pleasure to watch. I've never tried anything like that. Also it's making my teacher brain wonder if there's a way I can teach my students that. Also I've never used a plane on the side like that.
    Finally I like the scraper you used for a bit there. Underrated tool and a technique that has fallen by the way in schools here.

    • @davedavem
      @davedavem 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From what I've gleaned from Daisy's and other luthiers' channels, that technique of using the plane on its side is great for jointing. The thick piece of wood is called a "shooting board", you hold the piece you're planing against that and run the plan along it on its side. I think Daisy made her own shooting board.

    Well that turned out rather well. Thinking out loud, wondering if hide glue (along with Domino's, biscuits, dowels or splines) would have been a "better" choice on the box frame - easier to clean up. Says the guy that has used hide glue perhaps once...... :^) For morticing the hinges, a small router plane (Lie Nielsen makes one) would be the cat's meow, highly recommended. Black finger nail polish was a nice touch. :)

    Nice. I've never made one. If the veneer is thick enough, scraping rather than sanding can give a super smooth finish. For miters, hand cutting works. (See Paul Sellers for how to make a "Poor Man's" mitre box, or a separate video of his on making a larger mitre box.) Anyway, just a couple of thoughts, but that board looks good.

    Daisy. Do you sharpen your scalpel blades? Swann Morton blades straight out of the foil pack are really pretty blunt. They are designed for hacking flesh, not fine work. I always sharpen mine on fine wet-or-dry paper. It makes a huge difference. OK. I got to the end - that is a beautiful Backgammon board. I would be proud to own it.

    As ever I really enjoyed watching you craft something from nothing.
    I imagine you're fully aware of this and have a reason not to use them, but in case you aren't, you can get rulers with finger guards for when you're scoring with scalpels. Mine has saved my fingers a few times.
    And just because I get anxiety from bandsaw footage in your other videos, push sticks/blocks are also good PPE.
