  • Last week I bought a Honda Ruckus. I was looking at the Yamaha R3, a Honda Grom, and the Ruckus for my 4th bike in the garage. Y'all wondered why on earth I'd buy a scooter. Here's why!

I bought a 2017 Ruckus that year, after riding a Goldwing 1800 for several years…crazy transition, huh? But my knees were the deciding factor. I love my Ruck, and more fun than a barrel of monkeys! Mine is still basic stock, but I added the larger rack, a fold down carton for carrying groceries, hard bags, headlight gravel guard, and a battery tender. Also brought over my seat pad from the Goldwing! Ha ha. I ride it in my metro areas as the traffic averages less than 40 mph anyway. I have had more than 8 bikes ranging in size from a 110 Honda Trail, a Yammie twin 100, a Honda 750 ACE, and the Goldwing, and now that I have lived for 73 years, the Ruck suits my life. Too much fun! One of my fav local cafes, the waitresses know me as Scooter Boy” ! Ha ha.

You shouldn't use bicycle mode because it will tell you to go down bike roads that you're not alowed on, put it in car mode, clic on options and switch it to avoid highways.

The Ruckus, of the three, is definitely the most blank of canvases. It also kind of taps into something analogous to the the low-rider aesthetic: it's for cruising and looking good.
Btw, you might get better directions if you pick car routing but select "avoid highways". Bicycle routing will sometimes send you through parks and bike paths and so on (not that Texas has stuff like that, but you know).

I have a 50cc Vespa and its really a lot of fun. I'm so glad you got the Ruckus, its worth every penny
edit: The reason the speed is limited to 43mph is probably because of the ECU limiting the RPM's, you can change them but its better to swap the engine ofcourse

I'm pretty excited for this build man. I was one of the people that recommended doing a cafe racer build, but it was because it was unique. I think another perk of doing the ruckus build is the fact that you are going to be really doing noticeable work to its performace, not just looks. It will be easy for us viewers to see the changes you are making

I totally agree @Motonosity, when you said it feels different. I rode a scooter while on vacation and I ride a 2016 Harley Davidson Breakout, and it rides completely different. It is a two wheel vehicle but being that your legs are together instead of straddling the bike it does have a different feel than its motorcycle counterparts. Anyways have fun with it, looking forward to the new build series!

Unpopular opinion: Let’s be honest, trying to safely route yourself to any location on a 50cc is half the fun of riding one. And it’s worth noting that as a viewer I feel like this ruckus was more fun for you as a 50cc then after you finished the build. There I said it lol

Brent, I’ve owned NOTHING EXCEPT three mopeds (still have 2, they are sentimental to me) and my motorcycles have been all Harleys. Starting at 18 with a sportster, then Electra Glide I customized, a Wide Glide I slammed to just a couple inches off the pavement and my current big boy is an Ultra Classic with all the comforts, lower fairings custom audio, you name it. It wasn’t until my first trip to Key West when I discovered just how darn much fun it was renting the Ruckus’ cousin, the Honda Metropolitan. I rented that scooter every day I was in the keys.
Recently, I finally found a like brand new Met with 83 new miles on it that an old man had since 2002. I paid $600 for it after looking everywhere for one. Before then, I just could not find a used one. Once people buy these two specific Honda 4 stroke water cooled 50cc bikes, they do not part with them. I ride my Met everywhere. My daughter is taking it to college next late summer for cheap transport. It cost me $25 to tag and register it in my state and only 9 bucks a year for insurance. My daughter keeps a new Kryptonite U Lock under the seat and uses the standard center stand lock and fork lock. Everyone needs to know that the Met and the Ruck are THE most stolen scooters in the USA. So lock them up even on quick errands. Since my new Metro toy is going bye byes next summer, I am buying the white version of the Ruck 2019 model from the Honda dealer this week. I will miss the great storage beneath the seat and the retro looks of the Met, but I will love the beefier off road tires for slowly taking on trails in my area. Plus, I go camping in our RV travel trailer and I don’t need to be like the old men with the heavy, pain in arss golf carts . I just throw the scoot in the Silverado and no added weight but like 150 lbs. I don’t get it or understand it....I literally smile when I ride the Met. I get more complements on it than when I’m on my super sharp bagger Harley. I fill it up with gas in it’s floor mounted tank two or three times in a season, getting 100+ MPH. I love the little ingenious thing. The alternator doubles as the starter. You can’t hear it crank over! Plus if I leave the light on and drain the battery, I simply kick start it with minimum toe strength. 35-40 mph is great for a 50cc! Maybe it’s like you stated, I’m SICK of straddling a hot , noisy engine. I can’t wait to pick up this Ruck and ride it in the late fall this year. I’d never sell my Harley, but I’m not ever going to be scooterless either. They freakin make me a happy rider. Fast enough to get to point B and just slow enough to smell the roses from A to B. One of my greatest finds ever on two wheels.

I kind of did things backwards with your videos. I watched every single episode of the ruckus build and then finally watched this one. I bought a used ruckus about 2 weeks ago and your build series has truely been an inspiration to me. I have yet been able to give it a good ride because the military makes riding motorcycles (even a 49cc scooter) a huge pain. I'd love to see a ruckus update from you in the future!

I live in San Francisco and ride a vespa GTS 300... Its the perfect vehicle to have here. The reason is because the traffic is kinda thick and with a motorcycle there is much more THINKING happening... You need to think to shift it. That will sometimes take a precious 1/2 second of your attention that you might be getting sideswiped or hitting someone (tons of people and cars in SF). A vespa or ruckus takes all the thought away which helps so much. Also with the vespa you get that 1 cylinder torque from a light and beat all the cars off the line. It is legal to lane-split here up the middle lane when all the cars are stopped at a light. You get the jump on the whole line of traffic. I feel much more safe and ready to manuaver on a scooter because of the much smaller tires. It is less "scarey" than a motorcycle in tight situations. I have owned multiple proper motorcycles as well. The vespa even does 60-70 on the highway and gets massive gas milage because it is 1 cylinder! The only problem with it is that it when you hit a big hill on the highway it slows to 55. They really just need to make a vespa GTS with a 400cc. that would be the perfect vehicle and I would never buy a motorcycle again. Europe has a yamaha Xmax 400cc which is exactly what vespa needs to do. All the futuristic scooters look hideous though. Vespa is the only one that looks halfway classic. If you have any pull at all beg vespa to make a 400cc scooter. I heard there was a 600cc honda adventure scooter coming out but that this is heavy I read they developed it an it is like 500lbs! So I guess Vespa get with the program please... I need a scooter I can commute on AND drive to Santa Cruz when I need to... If I lived in a less congested city I'd probably get a proper motorcycle again but in any type of larger size city - vespa is the way to go. And now I may move over to oakland which will make the vespa a little to slow for the early morning commute... VESPA IF YOU ARE READING THIS GET THE 400! I did love how smooth my triumph was...

I live in italy and obv our laws are very different from your's. The most popular motorcycle licens is the AM that allows you to drive 50cc only bikes. As for the honda Ruckus in America, here 95% of the scooters got some sort of work done and some of them look crazy (very common models are Phantom f12, Yamaha Aerox, Aprilia Rs, and much more, including HM derapage/baja/six competition, that aren't scooters but small supermotos/enduro bikes all street legal). I'm looking forward to this build series, keep it up C:

I have seen alot of Honda "Ruckus" in Chicago. People in my area have been "predator engine" swap 212cc, 420cc, and 670cc with shift kits. making the Ruckus unnecessary "fast" and "Quick" well you get the best of both. >"Read"

I think this is a really cool Idea. Keeps the channel fresh, provides new content, especially when you decide to do the custom work on it. It allows you to stray from the generic 'Hooligan on a sportbike' motovlog. I'm partial to the idea though, because I was within days of buying a used ruckus as my first 'bike', but ended up finding a great deal on an '84 Honda Magna VF700C by the influence of Do It With Dan so I of course went with that. I'm looking forward to seeing the Ruckus more often

This is one of his main points of the video. He didn't want that to happen and that's why he didn't get the R3 or the Grom. Those are both slower versions of bikes he already has, the R3 to the R1 and the Grom to the CRF. Plus there's a ton you can do to a Ruckus and it'll be a great series.

I've been riding for 15 years. I used to race an 848. I've owned Honda RR's, Yamaha R1's & R6's, I've ridden a Taiwanese KTM from Saigon to Hanoi on the Ho Chi Minh.. I bought a Royal Enfield in New Delih India paid off the border guads and rode for for 2 month sin Nepal.. you name it. Hell..
The only bike I own and honestly the only bike I really need for 90% of my riding is a 2014 Honda Ruckus that I've put 3,000 miles on so far. Once you've ridden a ruckus you will appreciate it for what it is. Its an ego check.. It's 50cc's of smiles and WOT everywhere you go.. MOST IMPORTANTLY.... It's me stopping by a 7/11 on the way to work and getting to enjoy my cup of coffee while I drive (no clutch FTW!)... and what bakerxderek said!

Yeah man I get it. I got this CB450 (which is a far cry from a scooter) and it was having all sorts of carb problems and what-not when I first got it but it was still fun to ride because between the carb problems down at low throttle and the slipping clutch at high throttle it was an adventure just to get to 40mph and that made it super fun. Doing that every day on the way to work I had completely forgotten about my R1 which I just had to sell when I moved 6mo prior to buying that CB. The R1 is epic but this was adventurous just to get to 40 - and that add a whole new layer of fun.
So I think that's sort of how this is - but 50cc is a bit too tiny for me, but maybe you throw one of those 125's in there and you can have some massive fun with that thing, lol. Look forward to your build.
