  • It takes years of hard work to become a famous and well-respected athlete, but sadly, it can all come to an end with just one injury. While some great athletes have decided to retire a bit early due to a few too many painful hits, others have suffered more dramatic wounds before they ever got to realize their full potential. Some got knocked down during one of their first seasons in the NFL or NBA, while others sadly suffered their big injuries before they got to make their debut in the pros. Let’s take a look at some athletes who were permanently injured just before making it big.

Which of these stories is the most tragic in your opinion? Do you know of any other athletes that belong on this list?

Greg Cook could have been one of the best QB's that ever played. He led the league in passing as a rookie. He averaged 17.4 yards per completion. He had three shoulder surgeries and never came back. It's so sad what happened to him. The injury led to invention of the West Coast Offense. ESPN should do 30 for 30 on him.

For all those who think wrestling is fake, REALITY CHECK! Many pro wrestlers have serious injuries that are permanent. Whether it's concussion, paralysis or are one step away from horrible life changing circumstances. There's a lot of pro wrestlers who you didn't put on the list. Anyone else remember when D'Lo Brown botched and put Draz in a wheelchair permanently, Tyson Kidd (Natalia's husband) was injured really badly and was lucky he didn't end up paralyzed. A lot of pro wrestlers end up dying young due to brain injuries that show up much later on. Some of them have even died in the ring or after a match.( I know Owen Harts accident killed him but this isn't what I am referring to RIP Owen) but a few others have died due to injuries or one match a while back,( not too long ago) the guy died in the ring during a tag team match ( not WWE).Plus there are certain wrestlers who are botchers regularly and a lot of wrestling companies don't care who they hire (NEW JACK anyone? He's super dangerous and doesn't care about the safety of others, almost killed a young man during a match, yet still gets regular work) I could keep talking about this topic for a really long time but everything else I say is proof that wrestling is NOT fake.
