That was the best episode yet, I've never sat and watched such a long episode and been so interested by it. I hope it gets like a million views because people need to hear this.
Agree, 100%. There's cultural history and there's technical history. The Professor has both. I've been waiting for this episode. I'd love to see a PS Stix channel that deals with these issues in depth for individual skaters. Not just theory, but application.
I think its definitely the next step in the Skateboard / Rider , able to customize the exact setup for how you ride and your physical body at the time, also math and geometry make factual sense with board performance and balance.... The Professor needs to make some SOP's for other "board crafters" such a Mike V to follow suit, especially with those skaters in the Olympics .... it's a given to obtain that one step ahead of the competition , or making that certain trick you want to get .... super cool to learn stuff like this ! A+ .....it's cool to hear the history , I too came up thru Silk Screening and early Post Production , neat to hear about that tech again ... Quadra 900 !! I used one also back then , it was the Mac Pro of today !
This man's knowledge about skateboarding, and how skateboards work is unparalleled. He needs to write a book or figure out a way to preserve all of his knowledge for future generations.
He's like that with all the OG guys. He truly loves that era, as do all of us who came up in it. It's wonderful to watch. He's awesome. They're all awesome. They make such a great show.
Great video guys! Paul Schmitt... Please write a book on board setup and the variables. How to set your board up for your goal. It would be a great book and educate those who want to setup their board correctly. Thanks for everything that you bring and have bought to skateboarding. Greets from Germany :)
You guys always have banger guests but I have to say this was hands down my favorite episode to date! What Paul does and contributes to skateboarding is beyond comprehension and he still has that fire when he talks about it. Thank you Nine Club!
its a big one. its a long one. its a great one. I'm way into skate science, super picky with dimensions. getting old, declining body, looking for that edge. thx for this one guys. and Paul's gifts damn, he's so rad!
By far my favorite episode to date. 4 hours wasn't near enough time to crack the knowledge vault of Paul. Thank you so much for bringing him on the show and I also thank him for basically evolving skating into what it became in the 90's. Fucking epic!
The guys a hidden gem of the skate scene that I grew up in. From rails to tails the guy knows everything about the useless wooden toys we grew up on! Thank you Paul for all you’ve shared over the years.
Re-Al-ity!! Scmhitt is a good dude and his boards are solid! He has pride in his work. Love it. Great show. Anyone remember the Skateboarding with Schmitt Stix VHS you could buy at Sears? I wore that video out. Monty ruled!
He autographed my Copy of that tape last February! Told me the story of how it was produced and edited and who paid for it and all this other obscure info about it.... v cool
Working in manufacturing and engineering, this is such a dope episode to watch and hear about the whole process! I never thought about it as much! THANK YOU!
Such a good episode. Harvard or MIT or someone needs to make him an honorary professor of skateboarding, he has all the knowledge to teach a full course on it. Also, ANOTHER Markovich reference...... Eventually we're gonna have to get that interview.
Bow down to the Professor! Skateboarding owes a huge debt of gratitude to this dude. He has a pure love for skating and his knowledge is unreal. Hope there are a couple 'young professors' ready to keep pushing things forward. Thank you so much for having him as a guest!
This is interesting! I even went to grab a board to look at the plies. Editing my comment to say best episode yet! Just finished it and my mind is blown. Now I want to support board companies that use him to make their boards.
For a while, Indy would change the “size” of their trucks as a new stage would come out. Stage 7 was 137, stage 8 was 138, stage 9 was 139. Once Indy got to stage 10 they stopped changing that last digit so now they’ve just kept the last digit as a 9.
I've now listened to this over 300 times. Truth...inspirational stories that I relate to.I had a vision, powell, and ps stix boards (girl, plan b etc).Thank you 9 club, you guys are just rad.
As a kid at 10 years old in the mid 80’s that was obsessed with skateboarding, lol, I had always called every rail that was made “Schmitt Stix”. Didn’t matter what company made them, they were Schmitt Stix to me and to all my buddies back then. LOL It’s great listening to this mans stories. This and the Vallely episode...just incredible! And now Schmitt is helping design and make some of the StreetPlant boards! I love how this whole history of skating comes down to a bunch of kids that want to ride a board and just have fun! Great episode guys!
this episode was super informative. it'd be rad to have a PS segment on The Experience, every now and then...or every episode. Keep up the great work, guys.
I remember reading the technical column in transworld, i use to do some many things to my set up based on those...never thought it was Paul Schmitt writing...makes sense now!
Great to hear a 3rd side to skateboarding's history! First the skaters and then filmers now how the decks came to be! Thank you for another great show!
As someone who works in engineering this was an amazing episode. Crob and Kelly were exactly like when I try and have a conversation with my friends about anything slightly technical... or even very basic maths.
One of my fav episodes for sure! Ive been learning and experimenting with wheelbase and different boards on my channel and its amazing the difference a small number can make. I feel like so many skaters can benefit from switching their setup just a bit. needless to say today I got a Thank You board (PS Stix) to review soon!
@@oskargarden4559 lemme break it down! in the US it is a law to wash eggs before selling them as they use Chemicals and other substances in the chickens and on the eggs as there is a higher chance of getting salmonella in the US. I'm so glad people seem to be really enjoying this episode! I knew I would love it as I'm a total skate nerd, but so pleased that (probably younger) skaters are stoked on it too. Paul Schmitt is a legend - used to love the ads with Grosso and Lucero dorking around!
I listen to the podcast and rarely watch it. Came to TH-cam just to like the video and comment. What a great episode, never thought of a skateboard from that perspective.
One of the best episodes and glad everyone agrees! Went and measured an old “8.5” that I felt good on and turns out it’s 8.38 set it up and did my first Nollie flip! Thank you Nine Club and Paul Schmitt!

Fuck yeah. I've been on a big Fred Gall kick lately. Just watched his Bobshirt interview the other day. He had an old Slap cover doing a noseblunt yank in on a weird bank in Indian School Ditch I tried to drop into one time and ate so much shit. YES 100%. Would love to read anything about board shapes/parts and how they affect your skating
Skateboard 101 by Professor Schmitt
Look up ben degros’ youtube channel, he does reviews with this kind of mindfulness of what he’s skating
truly. I been to skatopia as a kid every fall. Met Jake a few times. Skated from HK to HTown. This is priceless
he just needs to keep returning to the nine club. we have 7 hrs of an "audiobook" already!
There's nothing like opening up TH-cam to see a 4 hr Nine Club episode
Paul Schmitt cares! Been in the game since the absolute begining and still on the cutting edge. Thank you @The Nine Club What a gift

This episode is now among my favorite episodes of the nine club. This was absolutely amazing!

Woah Paul schmitt is actually amazing. Its actually crazy how much development went in to making a board.
Straight up legend! The man that taught me about wheelbase and how much board dimensions actually matter.

Paul "the reality is" Schmitt,
good guy.
"He's used to a thin rail sliding into a crack"

Please do a segment of Crob at the Professor's workshop. Press a board, analyze the geometry of his board, then go over to the stage and test it out
