Have an iPad mini 7 for a week now, had an iPad Pro 11 inch from 2018 before. I really love the mini! The pro feels so much bigger and heavier! I take the mini with me everywhere!
I have an Ipad pro 11 inch 2021 and I am thinking about to change to the mini 7. I do not feel comfortable the pro, but I'm afraid I'll regret it. I am not a pro user, most of the time I read a book on it. What do you think?
@@danielkovacs9710Hey! I also had the exact same tablet as you and got the mini! I’d say, at first you question if it was a good idea but I love this thing so far and have had it for a few days now. Everyone around me lowkey wants one now cause of me haha. Go with your gut!
I replaced my 2018 11" pro with an 2021 M1 but all the time with it I have kept thinking this is to big , my long ago mini with a keyboard disappeared in meetings and I could type while participating in the meeting, just doesn't feel the same with an 11'" it feels I behind it.
Upgraded my iPad Mini 6 to the A17 Pro; needed more storage. Got a new dbrand skin again on your recommendation from the 6 and I love it. Not as nice looking, IMO, as the banana but then I got it for the stability it gives me so I don't drop the device. I traded my 6 in and I have to tell you, removing the dbrand skin was a test in fortitude. This 78-year-old used every ounce of her strength to remove it. Another nice review, Patrick, thank you.
I upgraded from the 2019 5th Gen. This is the form factor that works for me, and it really complements my Product Red iPhone 13 Mini. Thanks for the content.

Form factor and power is fine. The main issue with Mini (or any non “pro”) apple device is the lack of a smooth scrolling experience. Screen is fine, but any browsing is getting jerky since it only supports 60 Hz. I tried the new iPhone (non pro) and got headaches after browsing. For some professional or anyone who needs to check a static image or PDF, it’s fine though.
@@PatrickRambles great and practical review as always. Since my iPad mini 6 still has a good battery and the 60hz is still in play, I’ll be holding on to the 6 for now and hoping for a more significant update before my mini 6 is retired.

Thanks for the review Patrick. I use my Mini 6 daily and it does seem to need charging more often. However, I opted to use my computer budget for the base M4 Mac mini (which arrives today). We'll see how long that lasts 😄
It helps to see this device in person and hold it in your hands. I had read various reviews arguing that the iPad Air was “just” $100 more in the base configuration so why would you get a mini? But when I held the air in my hands it was … no, not buying this no matter how fast it is. But if you never owned a mini 6 it doesn’t matter to you and if you have a mini 6 why would you want a mini 7. Wait a few years, like the mini 9 if it ever comes out. Love it, had the 6 , now got the 7… couldn’t resist. It comes absolutely everywhere with me. I’m female and all my handbags are bought making sure the mini fits into them, then im never caught short for an urgent work email or to send over a file or something.
Ive had mostly the larger ipads over my life the last mini i brought was then first gen. I sold that a few months after getting it as it was just too slow, i treated myself to the ipad mini 7 and to be honest i love it, i use it ,more then the larger screen ipads especially on a day to day case for notes reminders and tasks. Never had the pro but i do have the s9 plus for anything that needs more power. With the larger ipads handed down to family. I have the perfect balance now ipad mini iphone 15 and the ultra watch with the andriod s9 plus for anything else best of all worlds.
I agree about storage. My 64GB model limits app usage and requires app offloading for updates. I primarily use it for notes in meetings and watching your great videos. Okay, just media consumption all around. I appreciate your updates and consider them when deciding on device updates. I value the latest features while saving money, as this year’s major device updates were limited.
You are my go to for all things iPad mini. The screen is all I needed as well. Not only would I have upgraded but would have also bout the new pencil. I barely use the second gen and apple would have had my money.
I traded in my mini 6 yesterday for an Air 11. I bought the mini to be used as a portable content creation machine, but I soon found out that the good Insta and YT Shorts editors are only supported on phones. Went from a 12.9” iPad Pro to the new A17 mini After a week my verdict is: the mini is the best iPad currently available. Specs are irrelevant, as no other model is as ergonomic and usable
Patrick! Such a great video and review! I recently just got my iPad Mini 7 and I guess I downgraded from the iPad Pro 2021 to this because I barely used my iPad due to the simple fact that it felt like I was carrying my laptop around. Everyone around me judged me for that but I love this thing and all I ever do is watch videos, play games, and write notes and it’s the cutest thing ever. Thank you for the review! I’m even more confident in my purchase now.
Thanks for an excellent review once again, Patrick. I do think that the decision to upgrade from a mini 6 to mini 7 might well be influenced by how much one can get by trading in their old mini. I decided to keep my mini 6 because, like you, I still really love it. But some folks are getting $350 in trade for a 256 GB Mini 6 from Best Buy, making the cash out of pocket only $250 on a 256 GB mini 7, which IMHO is pretty compelling. I traded in my 256 GB mini 5 and got $215 from Best Buy, reducing the cost of the mini 7 to under $400. Did I need to upgrade, probably not. But that trade-in value likely won't stay anywhere near that high for long.
I only got $290 CAD for my 256 Gb mini 6 from BestBuy with the box, paper sleeve thing, and unused charger/cord - it was pretty much mint. If I didn't live so far out of town I would have tried to sell it privately, I'm pretty sure I would have been able to get at least $400 from it - so my advice is check around, BestBuy needs to make money too so they aren't necessarily giving you the best trade in value.
Depends on what you want out of an ipad. If you can part with the 120 hz screen and power of the m2, the form factor of the mini might be more pleasant for casual use.
Thanks for the video, I have question for you? Do you really recommend paper like for the iPad? I heard some stories that can damage the screen, so I am kind of skeptical about it. iPad mini looks nice, but I already have a 9th generation Air, and iPad Pro M4. I am good….
The very first video on my channel is on how to apply a paperlike (please, never watch that 😂). I've been using it ever since and I can honestly tell you it's a must have for me. Why would it damage the screen?
It's the third Gen, technically. There's even a fourth option, a cheaper one that came out last year.

Oh, I get it. So basically the lack of "backwards compatibility" is what OP was missing. Get it. I'm considering iPad Mini with the new Pencil Pro so I guess I'm still covered. Thanks for clarification and great review.
I’m extremely sensitive to the jelly scrolling on the mini 6 and I hardly notice it on the 7, so for me that’s a huge win! But I notice the 60hz more than the jelly scroll effect. Also if you like the feeling of the paper like screen protector, I suggest looking into Ghost Armor’s matte finish skin for the back of your iPad, it’s my go to for all my iPhones and iPads. It feels amazing and adds a much needed “grippyness” to the iPad, as well as resists finger prints
I’m thinking of upgrading from a mini 5, which I love, since it is definitely showing its age. Lower battery life, slower speeds (by a lot actually), and my charging port is pretty inconsistent.
@@PatrickRambles True enough, but my brother does have the Pro, the air and he has an old Mini 4 he uses as a sat nav. So he has choices. The mini is the best choice for me.😀
Great review! I updated from 6 to 7 for the AI features. Also, I agree with you loving the dbrand Bulletproof Banana skin. Best ever! It's a shame how far they've fallen in the last few years, but what are you gonna do? Keep up the great work!
@@PatrickRambles As a long time dbrand customer, I'm willing to bet that you can heat up that skin, remove it, and re-apply to the mini7... Just sayin'!
I have a 2021 ipad 11” pro with the 2nd Gen Pencil, and haven’t upgraded my iPad mini since 2012. Thinking about getting one to complement my Pro. Would you suggest a 6 so I can still use my Pencil, or go for the 7?
Bought a pencil for the iPad mini 6, and never really used it. So I will probably wait to buy the pro pencil for the mini 7. Love the upgrades on the mini 7, and have used it for many things everyday.
I am guessing you are talking about that model of iPad Mini came out in 2021. My son had an iPad Mini in 2019(or 2018 to 2019) before they changed the look to the current. He went off to basic training in April 2020 and hasn’t used one since. I plan to get him the new model for Christmas this year since he wants to be a pilot and he reads a lot of books.
I love your honest reviews. But, my only wish is rotation cannot be set - when reclining or lying down (and working with patients/clients with limited/unstable movements) the rotation auto goes from portrait to landscape constantly and is frustrating. The original iPad I remember I could set the rotation to not have it rotate. Tim needs to talk to ME! and put this back in the iPad. Also, I should be able to turn on or off the auto shaping when pausing my pencil when taking notes - my irregular line should remain so and not go to a straighten line when I don't want it to (I'm note taking a resting my pen! - I don't need an auto shape change!)..
I have a MacBook Pro 14 inch and also an iPhone 15 Pro Max. I really wanna get a tablet, but I’m torn between the mini 7 and an iPad Air. Is the mini seven really that much better than a pro Max phone? They seem like they would be almost the same size. For reference I predominantly want to use my iPad for media consumption.
I use an iPhone PM too. The Air or Pro are too close to my 14" MacBook Pro for me, so I end up not using them. The difference between the iPad Mini and the iPhone is bigger than you might think.
I bought an iPad Pro 11 for $299 on Amazon. It’s a little outdated but does get iPad OS 18.1 and works great. I just can’t see paying $500 for a smaller table with no Pro features. 😎
I really like the mini overall, I swapped from an iPad Pro 12.9 M1 2TB to the Mini A17 Pro 512GB because I just wanted a smaller tablet mainly and the larger iPad just wasn't getting much use these days. The last time I had a Mini was when the iPad Mini 3 came out, so it's been a very long time. I love the smaller size and compared to the larger one, and it pretty much weighs nothing in comparison, so it's much more comfortable to hold. I really do miss the better quality screen, dropping from 120hz to 60hz is extremely noticeable to me, literally a night and day difference and I really miss Face ID, I haven't used Touch ID in many years, not since the iPhone X came out so it's really annoying to go back to that again. Why the hell have they not added Face ID to it by now is a mystery. The Apple Pencil compatibility annoyed me as I had to spend £129 just to replace a perfectly working pencil, so that's money down the drain for no reason. Will say though that the new features on Pro one are pretty cool, ended up making the squeeze gesture a shortcut back to the home screen, and it works great. I just wish Apple made a Mini Pro that has all the features of the larger tablet but sticks to using the best iPhone chip at the time if they can't make an M CPU work due to power usage and heat, I bet that thing would sell amazingly well. Overall though I'm extremely happy with the iPad Mini 7, it's lightweight, fast and far more portable, and I'll definitely be using this one more.
I’ve been waiting for the update for a year while playing the app swap game with my 64gb Mini 6. Unfortunately the A17 Pro chip is a deal breaker. While I was hoping for an M chip, even just the M1 or M2, but the A18 Pro would have been more than enough. I want to play Assassins Creed and Death Stranding; both games just aren’t a good experience with the A17 with their framerate issues.
Best realistic videos as usual Patrick ❤ Always wanted but never owned a Mini , I do love the size/look . Kinda wish it came with Face ID but saying that, It’s a win-win with my apple gift cards…
Confused. iPad being my first Apple product and owning iPad Air 5 (m1) should I add mini 🤔. I’m really frustrated with 64 gb. But I recently upgraded to air with frustrating 64 storage. For the price of 2024 mini we can get m2 air. Going with old 256 gb is expensive and 64gb not worth. Please suggest.
I understand your confusion. I think they are very different tablets. Personally I use the mini far more and for more varying use cases. That is why it's my favorite. I'd give up my M4 iPad Pro before the mini.
I know calling it the mini 7 is easier than saying the mini a17 Pro, but we should start looking at it for what it is. I look at it more as the mini 6.5, it’s really just the 6 with some added tweaks. I mean it’s not a far fetched concept to say that, Apple has done similar things like skipping iPhone 9 and going straight to the X (10)..I really don’t think this is the 7th generation mini, the 7th generation mini whenever it arrives I believe will have everything it should have like 90 or 120 hertz, Oled, no jelly scrolling, etc. In the meantime I’m absolutely enjoying my mini a17 pro, probably because it’s my first mini. But I have zero complaints.
Think the staff at the Apple Store will lose their minds with me trading in my M1 Pro 11 next week. You only live once right? Great follow up Mr Rambles, thank you!
@ASM_31 they're both great. If gaming performance and display matters to you, the pro is better. If you want something easy to pick up and play hendheld, the mini is awesome. It's premium quality vs convenience. If I had to choose, I'd choose the mini.
Hi Patrick. At 12:10, you mentioned mirroring the ipad mini screen onto an external display. Is that possible on both the mini 6 and the mini 7, or only on the 7? I have an iPad mini 6 and I've been using it more with typing and am considering buying an Asus ZenScreen or an espresso touch display. Thoughts?
Haven't tried PUBG yet, let me get back to you on that. It works with most games, including resident evil and assassin's creed so not just side scrollers. Doesn't work with Genshin Impact, sadly.
People who get or upgrade the iPad mini will always have their own justifications. I do upgrade my mini 6 to 7 (both are the cellular version) due to the bump of the storage (64GB to 128GB) and the ram size which are all fantastic and fundamentally great to my daily use. But I do agree that Apple should have given us a better display, at least an optional upgrade like the nano coating in the iPad Pro M4, which I will be happy to pay for.
PAT !!!! I line in the UK, Essex and us Apple intelligence on my iPhone 15 Pro max and my iPad Pro M4. All you need to do is set your language to English US and regional settings to America and AI will work.
@ hi Pat. I only change the language to English US and my region to United States only and the new AI works perfectly well without changing your App Store region settings.
You caught my ear when you mentioned using mini as a stream deck. Of to research this. As a mini 6 owner messing with music, I was hoping to see a M chip. Maybe the 8. Going to hold off even though the 6 is aging rapidly
Is that a Rolex Sub you’re wearing, and an Omega Speedy in another shot? It’s refreshing to see a tech youtuber wear a mechanical watch instead of an Apple Watch these days. As a watch nerd, I approve. But getting back to tech, why is there a $200 price premium to go from the 256gb to 512gb option on the Mini 7? I mean yes 256gb is more than enough for most people, but I can’t understand why on the iPad Mini it’s a 200 dollar upgrade to go to 512gb when on the iPhones it’s just a 100 dollar upgrade for each tier.
Yes sir! ⌚🤝 Great point about the storage. Apples storage economics have always been outrageous and I stopped trying to understand it. Same story with the new Mac Mini (video dropping in a few hours). Amazing base machine but any upgrade after that is 💰💰💰
@ salute fellow watch brother 🫡. And yes, you are right on that point. Apple’s storage pricing has always been outrageous, they charge $200 for what really is a $100 ssd upgrade. I guess Apple’s pricing really is beyond our understanding at this point 😂. Keep up the great vids!

Everyone around me judged me for that but I love this thing and all I ever do is watch videos, play games, and write notes and it’s the cutest thing ever. Thank you for the review! I’m even more confident in my purchase now.
Thanks Emily! Absolutely agree, the best iPad is the one you pick up the most.
That is a great point.
Is It mad to change my iPad Pro m2 for this one due to portability ? Or is way better
Depends on what you want out of an ipad. If you can part with the 120 hz screen and power of the m2, the form factor of the mini might be more pleasant for casual use.
It looks mad on paper but that doesn't matter. Will you use it more? Probably. Enjoy it more, most likely. 🤷♂️
This.
Really appreciate your honesty, I'll stick with mini 6th for now ,thanks body.
🤝
Thanks for the video, I have question for you? Do you really recommend paper like for the iPad? I heard some stories that can damage the screen, so I am kind of skeptical about it. iPad mini looks nice, but I already have a 9th generation Air, and iPad Pro M4. I am good….
The very first video on my channel is on how to apply a paperlike (please, never watch that 😂). I've been using it ever since and I can honestly tell you it's a must have for me. Why would it damage the screen?
Ive used it forever on iPads, it comes off easily and has never damaged my screens. Not sure how it could?
I'm using Mini 7 from it's release and loving it. It's just convenient
Great video and I also adore the iPad mini! What external hard drive did I see you plug into it?
This one :) th-cam.com/video/UwKnLKndsPg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uQe62MCxVvb66YUl
@ thanks
Would have bought it immediately if it supported the pencil 2
Yeah that's a painful one.
Wait, sorry I'm confused. It supports Apple Pencil Pro, that's not the second gen pencil? Are there three options?
It's the third Gen, technically. There's even a fourth option, a cheaper one that came out last year.
Oh, I get it. So basically the lack of "backwards compatibility" is what OP was missing. Get it. I'm considering iPad Mini with the new Pencil Pro so I guess I'm still covered. Thanks for clarification and great review.
Exactly. And thanks!
Thanks!
I got the mini 7 and so useful on the go. Specs not amazing but ticks many of the boxes
Hanging fire on mini iPad Air m1 is doing me proud but went back to Mac today with the Mac mini M4 such a bargain great machine
Absolutely. Review incoming!
I’m thinking of upgrading from a mini 5, which I love, since it is definitely showing its age. Lower battery life, slower speeds (by a lot actually), and my charging port is pretty inconsistent.
That would be a worthwhile upgrade
I love that you mentioned that it's used by pilots because that is the only reason my brother bought a Mini.
I've seen helicopter pilots strap it to their leg. It's perfect!
Hi Patrick, great review as always! Which app do you use for pomodoro timer? Is it a free or paid app?
Focus keeper! It's free :)
Had mine for two weeks after using a mini 4. My brother said “get the Air” but when you know, you know…
There’s no comparison, the mini is its own category 🤝
@@PatrickRambles True enough, but my brother does have the Pro, the air and he has an old Mini 4 he uses as a sat nav. So he has choices. The mini is the best choice for me.😀
Great review! I updated from 6 to 7 for the AI features. Also, I agree with you loving the dbrand Bulletproof Banana skin. Best ever! It's a shame how far they've fallen in the last few years, but what are you gonna do? Keep up the great work!
Thanks man! Yeah I think I might frame the iPad mini 6 when it dies, just for the skin 😂
@@PatrickRambles As a long time dbrand customer, I'm willing to bet that you can heat up that skin, remove it, and re-apply to the mini7... Just sayin'!
Hi Patrick, thanks for sharing. I would like to know about the battery life of the ipad mini 7. How did it fare?
It's decent. About the same as the Mini 6.
I have a 2021 ipad 11” pro with the 2nd Gen Pencil, and haven’t upgraded my iPad mini since 2012. Thinking about getting one to complement my Pro. Would you suggest a 6 so I can still use my Pencil, or go for the 7?
I'd go for the 7 in that case. It will serve you longer.
Bought a pencil for the iPad mini 6, and never really used it. So I will probably wait to buy the pro pencil for the mini 7. Love the upgrades on the mini 7, and have used it for many things everyday.
Out of curiosity, what are your top three use cases for it?
@PatrickRambles I just used the same Apple case for the mini 6.
Love how your audio and video did not sync when talking about the jelly scrolling
That's because you were looking at the "video about jelly scroll" I was referring to.
That's an awesome gift!
Thanks and keep up the good work. Enjoy watching your take’s and congrats to you and your fiancé!
@kenc.852 thank you!
I have an amazing iPad mini 6 and it’s been great. Still running like a champ. I’ll consider when the mini 8 arrives in 2028
Totally still awesome.
Hey! Auto rotation should work. Is it not in your control center?
Nice video Patrick, at least you didn’t bash the 7 ya it has the latest chip I’m still unsure if I will upgrade tho 😊
Tough one :)
An iPad Mini Pro would be nice . A brighter screen { 800 nits} would be the most useful addition for a small take anywhere tablet like this!
Thanks for sharing man 👊
I’ve been waiting for the update for a year while playing the app swap game with my 64gb Mini 6.
Nice video, Patrick. Thanks!😊
🙏🏻
Whens your next day in the life video? Those are really good videos
Thanks man! I can only do those every so often. But I'll definitely keep making them as much as I can, I enjoy them too :)
noticed your watches in this video, awesome Speedy and Sub there 😍
Thank you sir 🤝
Best realistic videos as usual Patrick ❤ Always wanted but never owned a Mini , I do love the size/look . Kinda wish it came with Face ID but saying that, It’s a win-win with my apple gift cards…
You getting one now?
@ Yes! Absolutely., I’m ordering mine today. 256g 🤗 This is my day.😆
Confused. iPad being my first Apple product and owning iPad Air 5 (m1) should I add mini 🤔.
@ thanks a ton.
YOLO indeed ✌️
Nice review 👍
🙏🏻
What app are you using as the portable Streamdeck?
Steamdeck mobile app :)
Should I get the mini 7 or M4 Pro?
What do you want out of your iPad?
@@PatrickRambles media consumption basically + games. I feel these 2 are the best options, just thinking which to go for.
@ASM_31 they're both great. If gaming performance and display matters to you, the pro is better. If you want something easy to pick up and play hendheld, the mini is awesome. It's premium quality vs convenience. If I had to choose, I'd choose the mini.
Love my iPad mini 7 so much
Same
Thoughts?
Hey! The mini 6 can be mirrored too :)
I have slight jelly scroll on my M4 11” Pro in portrait. It’s a non-issue.
Will the Razer Kishi Controller work with PUBG or just limited side scrollers?
Haven't tried PUBG yet, let me get back to you on that. It works with most games, including resident evil and assassin's creed so not just side scrollers. Doesn't work with Genshin Impact, sadly.
I am still on the fence! Great review :)
Thanks!
I've been using iPad Mini's for at least 6 years so the iPad mini didn't come not in 2021 as you state, it came out in 2012?
I said the mini 6 came out in 2021.
Good looking dbrand skin on your mini 6 👍
I love it
You can still use Apple Intelligence if you’re not in the US just set the region in the language to the US and it will work just fine.
You'll have to set the app store to US too, that's the dealbreaker.
@ no I didn’t have to do that only the language and region it didn’t affect my App Store is still Norway.
I checked to be sure by the way.
should I get the 2021 one for 419 euro or this one for 619?
This one. Maybe wait for black Friday.
Agreed
I want a mini tablet with snapdragon x elite.
Only con is 60Hz screen. Very lagy scrolling through apps and pages.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
PAT !!!! I line in the UK, Essex and us Apple intelligence on my iPhone 15 Pro max and my iPad Pro M4. All you need to do is set your language to English US and regional settings to America and AI will work.
You need to change your app store settings to US too. I can't do that because I'll lose all my stuff.
@ hi Pat. I only change the language to English US and my region to United States only and the new AI works perfectly well without changing your App Store region settings.
@andyreynolds261 where are you based?
@ I’m near Chelmsford in Essex.
You caught my ear when you mentioned using mini as a stream deck. Of to research this.
As a mini 6 owner messing with music, I was hoping to see a M chip. Maybe the 8. Going to hold off even though the 6 is aging rapidly
Hey, where did u get the yellow case or Folie?
Hey! It's mentioned in the video. Dbrand, but they don't make it anymore.
What are your recommended note taking apps?
I still like notability, but Apple Notes is growing on me.
So has this pushed the Boox 10.3 out of the lineup?
Apples and oranges.
Yes sir! ⌚🤝
Great point about the storage.
Hey Patrick, can’t find it despite search grr, but what was your favorite TravelBag brand, the one with magnets?
The camera bag? Peak Design. Other brands you may have seen are Harber London or Grams28
@@PatrickRambles peak Design indeed, thanks for answering!
The scrolling is a lot better on the iPad mini 7 vs the 6.
Definitely improved
5:35 what is that game you playing? Looks fun.
Oddmar :)
@PatrickRambles Thank you.
Which game is it with the baby?
Resident Evil Village 👌
I kinda wish it was 7.9” for travel
Hope iPad mini 8 using M4 chip.
What game were you playing in the intro?
Thanks
Oddmar
@PatrickRambles wow
You replied 😄
Thank you 💖
Of course 😅
Forgot to ask you what is the name of the platform game that was featured on your video with dark background and lots of jumping and slashing. Thanks
Leo's Fortune!
it should have had the 18 chip and maybe 90 hertz screen
Bro said sage green is adding colour, bro that is literally the colour of decomposing corpses
So your telling me size doesnt matter?
I keep telling you it's OK to walk around with a small unit.
