Hope you come back to Jakarta soon. Some recommendations (I am trying to avoid higher end modernised food and focus on the traditional favourites): - Fish head curry at Medan Baru Krekot Bunder. - Wiro Sableng Kelapa Gading. Their specialty crab and ikan bakar are good. - Ayam Goreng Berkah Jalan Wijaya. Some say this is the best ayam goreng in Jakarta. The place only uses ayam kampung. It displaced my previous favorite. - Sate Ayam RS Pertamina Pusat. The original one at Kyai Maja. - Soto Betawi H. Mamat Pahlawan Seribu. - Nasi Akwang Kelapa Gading. - Bubur Ayam Mangga Besar I. Porridge + pek cam ke. - Bakmi Ayam Acang Dokter Susilo. Personal fave for bakmi ayam. - Ikan Bakar Cianjur Cipete. The nila pesmol and karedok. - Dapur Mamih Sateku Melawai. Lamb satay. For padang a lot of people like Pagi Sore. It is good, though I am not an expert in Padang food. Jakarta also has cuisine of other provinces like pempek or gudeg, but I think you can find better in those provinces. If you are coming to Jakarta and have a limited time, PIK (Pantai Indah Kapuk) arguably has the best concentration of good food, though not the cheapest. It is competitive there. If the food is bad, a restaurant will not survive.
You seriously need a local guide. The first two restaurants are places I take my foreign business clients to, not for foodie. So I won't be blamed in case they get food poisoning. There is a restaurant next door to Karebosi called Marannu. Selling the same things but better. As for recommendations, I remember watching Mark Wiens Jakarta video somewhere and thought he had a very good local guide.
yeaah I gotta agree, local guides sure make travels a lot smoother as traveller myself, especially when you're going to a country for the first time. But for me, with tour guides or not, I just enjoy and take everything that happens as part of the trip. haha Where's the fun without some hurdles and getting lost sometimes. 😅
Man you mess up..best food in Jakarta are on the street food side not fancy restaurants..and the menu you choose so lame..you should have soto betawi instead of an fancy oxtails soup..and nasi padang feast instead of nasi lemak series..you miss out man..
as a local, I can say that none of these places above is representative of how good our food can be. (except maybe the last one, sop konro karebosi) should have gone to some hidden gems.. but oh well, maybe next time Alderic!
Yeaah I agree, I actually felt like I missed out on some hidden gems last time I'm in Indonesia. Still had a great time in my recent trip there which I shared in my channel. Now, I'm checking local recos so I could make the most of my return to Indonesia next time. Any recos that most tourists miss? 👀 🇮🇩
9:02 Some time ago, I was staying in one of the Mangga Besar hotels and was trying to get to one of the malls. On the map, it didn't seem too far away so I asked the hotel concierge how long it would take to walk there. She looked at me like another head had just grown out of my shoulder "....walk????" in a stunned voice. Like it was totally inconceivable to her that anyone would walk in Jakarta.
Just wanted to say these videos are so well made and sort of inspire me to create something similar for my local Area in Sydney! If only I wielded the level of culinary knowledge haha. I loved watching the growth of this channel and how it manages to distinguish itself from other food reviewer channels by providing a blend of serious reviewing and light-hearted and playful humor. I also really enjoy the attention to detail - you would not imagine how valuable subs are until you watch other channels with noisy backgrounds.
Jakarta: 1. Padang food: Pagi Sore (BSD Branch. Their Ayam Pop and gulai tunjang are the best), Garuda (kelapa gading), Sari Bundo (Juanda branch) 2. Sundanese: DSDL Resto. (very under the radar. try their Sate Goreng Maranggi and Ayam Ngumpet) 3. Noodles: Bakmi Orpa (many old money Indonesian conglomerates eat here. It's "expensive" for a noodle place. Around SGD 6-7, which is expensive for an Indo noodle, but OK for the standard.). 4. Makassar coto and konro: Karebosi or Marannu (next to each other). Or go to Makassar city. 5. Street food: for a starter try Jalan Sabang street food vendors. They have entire stretch of streetfood. from satay to martabak to grilled seafood. 6. Seafood SF 6 (in Pantai Mutiara). Grilled fish rempah style and kerang dara rebus Other cities: 7. Rawon Setan (in Surabaya city). 8. Nasi goreng kepiting widodo at Kapin resto (Surabaya city) 9. Bihun bebek Kumango Asie (Medan city) 10. Nasi babi guling slingsing. (Mixed roast pig rice in Bali) Will come out with more recommendation. The rest see Mark Wiens Indonesian food tour, or Nex Carlos's. Good enough. Should be ok...
Wow what a long list! 👀Thanks for sharing all these! I just made a video about my recent trips to Indonesia, including some local foods and wish I had this list before! What's your favourite street food stall in Jakarta?
@@InvestedAdventure Bakso Cendana in Menteng. Indonesian meatball soup. Used to be frequented by President Suharto last time. Only cost $1 - $1.50 per bowl today! Nasi Goreng Cak Moo (in Surabaya City). Spicy fried rice. It costs $1.50. Typically sold out within 2 hours. Recently visited by Mark Wiens. th-cam.com/video/Eg8Wv_HMtLM/w-d-xo.html Also, try Babi Guling Slingsing Bu Suci (in Bali). Mixed roasted pork rice. The pig is grilled using coconut husk and coconut water.
I am Indonesian and exactly had the same experience the first time I ate the oxtail soup at Bogor Cafe. It was meh for its astronomical price. Perhaps it was legendary...20-30 years ago, but now, any oxtail soup at any proper restaurant will fare better
16 years back then, its really magnificent so buntut. With the all pinky tender meat. Cant say much. Superb. Judging from the video, it looks like downgraded... So sad.. Even the viral sup buntut at bogor looks better
Haha, same thoughts about Bogor Cafe! Thought it was overrated but still I'd like to have a good oxtail soup when I return to Jakarta. I realized I've only tried a few local Indonesian foods in my recent trip which I shared in my channel, and should try some more local eats when I come back. Any recos that's a must-try?
Alderic, love that you are willing to go to explore indonesia, but you need a local guide my dude. Or if not, watching Mark Wiens and going to the places he ate in Indo would be a decent substitute.
I was in Penang and whilst trying to find the food recommendation stumble across your channel. I think i was there at the same time you were in Jakarta at fasting month. I get the gist, i hope got it right, about your preference. So here is the list that you need to try in Jakarta (better not in fasting month): 1. Ayam Goreng Berkah "Rachmat" at Melawai / Blok-M. This leaning toward Central Java Taste. Ayam Kampung for sure 2. Ayam Pop from Pagi - Sore Restaurant at Cipete Branch. 3. Try the Soto Padang at Rumah Makan SURYA Masakan Padang, Bedungan Hilir but my personal preference is Soto Padang H. Bang Karto, Tanah Abang. every weekend me and my wife are running around Jakarta just to try Soto. This is the best of Padang Soto. 4. Soto Ayam Ambengan Cak Jito, this the best East Java Soto. I am currently trying all Nasi Uduk / Nasi Liwet that i can find every weekend around Jakarta due to your video. keep it up!
I like your blunt and honest reviews of the places you visited. Though, I think your choices were based on obsolete reviews. My go-to places for good food and atmosphere in Jakarta when I was there for three months in early 2023 were "Remboelan" restaurant (Grand Indonesia Mall), "Eaton" bakery & restaurant (Muara Karang), "H. Romli" goat meat satay & soup (RSSP, Gandaria), and "TOP YAMMIE" Chinese Food (City Center). "Bogor Cafe" was good in 1988-1989, not longer the case in 2023.
Bro, I think you should do another trip. I'm not sure who recommended those place, but they are known to be ok at best. Like you missed on amazing ones such as Nasi Padang, Bakmi, Siomay, etc.
Alderic, you should have Pagi Sore Nasi Padang (BSD Branch). It is the best padang food in Indonesia (hence the world). You should try it out next time. Or ping me up when you are in Jakarta and I will treat you Pagi Sore
After watching your entire video, it's clear you’re into food with lots of spices. You should definitely check out dishes from Eastern Indonesia. Try Ayam Woku, Tongseng, Coto (you've had it before), or maybe Tombur (this one's from North Sumatra). I'm sure you'll love them; they're packed with awesome flavors
If you like coto, you might be have to try soto betawi next time. Eat where the local eats, mark wiens have one video about it. You have to come to where he's eat soto Betawi And if you like sop konro with kluak, you might have to try rawon, east javan traditional food
Went to Indonesia recently and shared about my trip there in my channel. Soto betawi sounds like a must try when I return. Any more recos you have? Thank you! 🇮🇩
Wow had no idea you're in Jakarta. Hope you enjoyed your time and culinary adventure here despite some little mishaps! Edit: I wish I could've recommended Banceuy Nasi Lemak to you. Always went for their nasi lemak whenever I miss Singapore nasi lemak
Jakarta Nasi lemak aka nasi uduk have several version, which type you had? 1. Morning nasi uduk, simple and comforting with not much protein selection Random road side stall, only open till 9am 2. Night version A nasi uduk with selection ONLY Deep Fried protein of your choice. No stew, cuury, gulai, etc meal Nasi Usuk kebon kacang 3. Night Version B nasi uduk BETAWI with lots variety of home cooked betawi style menu; jengkol, kari, petai, bihun, fritter, balado, milkfish, etc - this is my FAVOURITE CHOICE of nasi uduk Nasi uduk Betawi Babe 4. Night Version C. Nasi uduk GORENGAN with ONLY STEW BEEF OFFAL SELECTION. Soupy and comforting Nasi uduk Bang Hasan 5. Night Version D. A more fusion nasi uduk, with wide selection of menu, array of nasi Padang menu, warteg menu available. Nasi uduk ibu sum Nasi uduk thomas 6. Nasi Lemak Medan style. Totally different thing to jakarta nasi uduk Nasi lemak pasar beruang Nasi lemak cita rasa medan Nasi lemak pasar duta mas 7. Nasi Gurih Aceh style. Similar to medan but simpler with additional beef jerky as the signature Nasi uduk 77 muara karang/ duta mas 8. Nasi Gemuk Jambi. Similar to Malaysia style. With peanut, anchovies, cucumber, sambal , and Shredded beef / chicken as its signature
alderic you should’ve reach out to locals im sure they would happy to give food recommendations!!! i trust locals more than the food bloggers (SORRY) especially when they’re foreigner. funny how i see the fancy place are so so, but the unassuming place seems to have better food!
The best oxtail soup is not in Jakarta but 2 hours away (well 40 minutes now thanks to the bullet train) at Dahapati resto, Bandung city. And much much cheaper.
Deep fried duck should be eaten onsite to maintain the crispyness, warm rice, sambal. Several version available Most recommended MADURA STYLE WITH Black sambal Surabaya style, But noted, indonesia duck quite small and dry especially cheap road side madura stalll The most important component is the black sauce. For surabaya style, more plump duck. You can try Bebek tepi sawah(balinese influence Surabaya style), Akibat bebek Muda or Bebek Kaleyo. And be mind. Indinesia standard for duck dish, STRICTLY NO GAMEYNESS So might not suit your palate. As a sporean, eat duck must have duck meat flavor(gamey) But this not applicable in jakarta So be prepare, chicken and duck meat not so much difference due to Indonesian preference preparation
Hey Alderic, you chose such a high price point for your first two locations. If you had gone somewhere cheaper and still a restaurant it would be more acceptable if the quality didn't match your taste. You could try Remboelan next time. The one at Pondok Indah Mall (PIM) was DELICIOUS. Another place I can think of is Kampung Kecil. I went to the one at Cinere, and it was amazing, but expect a long wait time in the hot weather. Still prefer Remboelan though. Glad to see you tried the martabak manis :D Next time in Indonesia, you MUST try the bubur ayam (quail eggs are a must have), ikan gurame (hard to find a good big one in SG), and roti bakar. Oh and, go try their kopi mantan at Kopi Kenangan. The recipe is different from the one u get in SG.
Although that sup buntut is popular, but you won't find shiokness in sup buntut. It is comfort food. Like you order and soup. I believe that is not even top 5 Martabak manis in Jakarta. Way too healthy. :) Coto Makasar & konro are heavy flavor. Can't be wrong for people can tolerate gamey. Definitely Pagi Sore Nasi Padang is must try and martabak Pecenongan/terang bulan if you are back again.
The couple of first restaurants you visited are not suited for you if you’re looking to find a very good food bcs most of them are higher up restuarants which are more like for business and gathering place, the food doesn’t shine that bright there (sop buntut bogor is indeed legendary bcs they are very famous but I don’t think it should be that very high priced). Maybe you should visit Plataran restaurant in Menteng, it’s a one of higher up restaurant but the foods are pretty delicious. If you like sop konro karebosi and coto makassar then I think you need to explore more from the local food around Indonesia. The one that’s still stick with the traditional and original recipe bcs you like intense flavour. I might recommend you BPK restaurant from Batak ethnic (north sumatera) which has grilled pork with very delicious sambal andaliman and green side dish, sei dish from Nusa Tenggara Barat which is a smoked pork very flavourful, soto betawi, soto bogor (most soto are very nice here in Indonesia and some of them have innards), gudeg from jogja might be very interesting too I think for you, seafood is also very good here! I love Aroma sop seafood in muara karang or Sentosa seafood restaurant. Try the seafood with padang sauce if you want to get the kick. I could recommend more if you need ^^ Oh and of course nasi padang! How could I forget to mention it 😂 also nasi campur bali and crispy duck rice from bali/surabaya All of these can be found in jakarta!
Singaporean here who visits Jakarta from time to time. Long story short, Indonesia has a lot of variety across regions, and not all of the tasty dishes are as well known internationally. Some other interesting places / cuisines to check out if you ever visit again: Nasi Padang: The proper kind where everything is served at the table, and you pay for what you eat. Pagi Sore from one of the comments below is good, or even good old Sederhana. Everything from Ayam pop (close style to what you had at Mat Lengket), Gulai telur, Beef brains, Nangka (Jackfruit), etc Sambal: If you thought Taliwang's was good, the Sambal Ijo at padang places will blow it out of the water. Also worth trying Sambal Balado, Sambal Matah if you see them. Satay: So much variety. Of course roadside places are most authentic, Sate Senayan would be good for a first timer to try different types. Nasi padang places would also serve Sate padang (saucier with different meat options). Restaurant Chains: A Fung is analagous to Yong Tau Foo, quite interesting soup with a nice shallot oil Bakmi GM is the most popular noodle chain, a little salty for my taste (I prefer Bakmi Roxy) Solaria's Kwetiau goreng sapi and fried rice is a bit under the radar Remboelan is not my favorite, but convenient chain to try many different regional specialties Regional: Acehnese (Ayam Tangkap at Kanabu Benhil is great) Sundanese (If you ever go to Bandung, check out Natuna for ayam goreng, Serayu for Cuanki) Manado, Madura, Yogya and so much more. Local guide definitely recommended overall, and just take Grab/Gojek everywhere lah ;) Grabfood works well too.
I’m glad that you enjoyed the Coto (which should be pronounced as “choto” BTW) and the Konro, but as you can tell from the name these dishes are not originally from Jakarta. Indonesian cuisine, like other big countries like China and India, is highly regional. Like what other comments have already mentioned, you should’ve reached out to your viewers. Rather than Coto Makassar, we could’ve introduced you to Jakarta’s own Soto Betawi. Sop Konro is great, but you could’ve tried the city’s own Sop Kaki Kambing. Please, locals would be more than happy to take you around. Next time must jio, OK! Cheers!🍻
@@Alderic. please do! 🙏 And if you’re looking for someone to go around with, try to get someone with no dietary restrictions so you can get the full experience. Looking forward to welcome you back to our country! 🍻
Great to see that the last day managed to give a memorable meal to save the trip. Also I thought you looked like you were in your late 20s so i'm quite surprised😂
Haha, sounds like your Jakarta food adventure had its ups and downs! 😅 Just like my recent trip to Indonesia, I tried sate ayam and some beef broth but somehow expected the broth to to have tastier flavour. Good thing you found that amazing soup at the end, makes the whole trip worth it! What was your favorite in this tour? 🇮🇩
@Alderic: Are you able to pls suggest some good Indonesian food that we can get in Singapore? e.g. Nasi Uduk/ Konro etc. YahLah... Watching your videos always gets me craving to try the food you recommend/ review (so quite dangerous to view Alderic's videos at 9pm supper time, without getting hungry!). But!! Thanks for your videos! (p/s: Your Day1-Day3 disappointments = imply you need a Local "Fixer" or Food Guide? Perhaps that's your "next Arc"/ Food adventure series?)
Hi Alderic, It's really unfortunate you visited all the wrong places except the Coto/Konro place :') please visit Jakarta again and eat at correct places. Bogor Cafe Sop Buntut is kinda famous for its expensive price and false "legendary" title. There's a good sop buntut resto in Bandung called Dapur Dahapati. Seribu Rasa Menteng is not bad but we have better places such as KAUM Menteng, Daun Muda Soulfood by Peresthu - Wolter Monginsidi or Remboelan Soul Food. Warung Upnormal used to be popular 6-7 years ago for its cheap food, famous among university students, but to me nothing special just like you said in the video, unless you want to eat some Indomie, its not really recommended. random indomie from random warkops on the streets would taste the same. For Martabak generally all shops r pretty good but next time try ordering both the savory (egg based) martabak and sweet martabak from Martabak Pecenongan78 and order pandan based batter mix with classic chocolate peanut cheese and cheese condensed milk. Just like what others recommends: Nasi Padang is a must, PAGI SORE! hope this helps!
I kinda feel bad for your trip, but i have a tips for you! Maybe next time you are going to a country first time, contact an influencer that can act as a guide for you, because im sorry but you missed so much from Indonesia😢 have a nice trip next time!
If you want to have a local guide in one of city in Indonesia(Makassar where i lived) i can guide you through to check out some our local dishes simply because if you travel alone you might having hard time a bit because unlike Malaysia Singapore or Philippines Indonesian not have that much English speaker here hence why the barista messed up your order.
I'm glad out of all local dishes you tried out Makassar dishes comes out top 2 maybe when you actually comes here you can tried out more variety from our other local dishes and i'll gladly guide you through as i want to introduced my local dishes to international audience
Only the last 2 places is the locals top picks 😭 I'm questioning your research methods like there's literally many ways to get the right & worthy places to eat in Jakarta on the internet
I have since gotten a lot of recommendations from locals. shall visit Jakarta again next year! may I know what's a good resource for finding places to eat in Jakarta?
A nearly tragedy food trip. Maybe you should have opened the 3rd unmarked food package. I was surprised when you mentioned that you are 43yos. I thought you are in your late 20s.
Do not trust google search result, they are basically an ad, even youtube reviewer is hit and miss. Interesting you like FORE though, i guessed everyone had different tastebud. I recommended to avoid Hotel and Mall food for memorable dish. Just ask GRAB or GOJEK driver where they would eat for a good food, You might get pleasantly surprised.
You went to wrong places for those 3 days. You should have googled nasi uduk beforehand, the equivalent of nasi lemak. Then Nasi padang, then all the good Chinatown fares, soto, sop, etc
@@Alderic. Go for Restoran Garuda for their beef rendang, should ask around for nasi uduk because the best nasi uduk always sold on the side of the road. You should also try bakmi Gajahmada in Jalan Gajahmada street. Never seen Singaporean complains about the noodles there
In my experience. It’s never worth the price to go to a fancy indonesian restaurant, because essentially indonesian food is about spices and whatever protein. Don’t have any justification for it to be so pricey. Always go to cheap local warung and you’ll be set!(hopefully)
@@Alderic. since jakarta is quite a big city, i suggest you go to area that 's best known for its foods. Like kelapa gading or pantai indah kapuk, pasar baru or tanah abang and many other area. And after you decide which area, then i'll be able to give recommendations. If not then the spot i recommend will be too far to each other and trust me, jakarta traffic is a nightmare 💞 But if you insist i'll give some recommendations 1. Konro bakar marannu or konro bakar karebosi. Both are rivals and only tens metre apart 2. Gado2 boplo 3. Rumah makan padang sinar minang 4. Asinan berawi H. Asymuni 5. Soto mie kota udang (this one is a hidden gem, only known by few) 6. Soto betawi globe H. Oji 7. Kari bihun lam 8. Rumah makan medan baru (try their burung goreng) 9. Rumah makan manado beautika 10. Noodles (too many to mention) 11. Mie kangkung jimmy
Jakarta is one of the places I swear I'd never go... The food is really bad (even though my friend is a local) and the service staff aren't the brightest if I'm being honest.
To be very honest most of the foods you ate here are the angmoh places😂 who recommend you these? 😭 you should come back and eat the local faves. Sop konro is the only good thing you visited.
This is soooooo wrong. No idea which food vlog you watch which food blog you read but never never never never never never never never never go to (chain) restaurants, especially those inside a hotel if you look for strong & deep flavour. The first two are places I would only come on my first two days upon arriving in ID after months of staying in countries with temperate climate or when my non-adventurous angmoh friends tag along. Nasi goreng, nasi lemak/uduk and nasi bebek come in hundreds of regional versions and in different qualities. Definitely need a better guide as the country cuisine is very complex and diverse while most information isn’t available in English.
Don't eat at these restaurants, really. For real. You are doing every single mistakes in the book. Fancy restaurant, looking for "indonesian food". The very first thing that you MUST understand. Indonesia is NOT Malaysia or Singapore or Thailand, where you can find "Indonesian dish". A generic restaurant like Bogor Cafe or Seribu Rasa are just that. Generic. They would sell anything they could get their hands on. To picture it, imagine that you found a restaurant, that sells spaghetti, bradwurst, duck confit, taco, sushi and laksa at the same time. That's what seribu rasa is. And then you expected to get the best laksa in town. No, you won't get that. You need to find singaporean restaurant for a good laksa. Indonesia is like Europe, with european countries as Indonesian provinces. You won't get a good baguette at italian restaurant, and you won't get good pasta at mexican restaurant. If you want to get a good Sop Buntut, go to East Javanese restaurant. Nasi lemak or Nasi uduk, is Sundanese. So if you want a good nasi uduk, find sundanese restaurant. Like you did with Coto. It is a makassar establishment, and it wasn't even the best one. Find Palubasa Serigala for the soup. Karebosi is also a good one for Konro. Actually coto is soto in Makassar dialect. Next time if you want to find food in Indonesia, do remember, that Indonesia is not one, and each of us has our own culture, and all cultures has their own dishes, that just won't be easily replicated by other culture. So you need to find respective restaurant for that. Padang food in Padang restaurant, Makassar food in Makassar restaurant, javanese food in Javanese restaurant, and so on. Banana fritter that you tried is coming from Borneo. I usually buy them from bu nanik. But bu nanik usually has long queue. Pisang goreng Pasti is much faster, and is not too far taste wise. If you are singaporean that loves laksa, you should find kari bihun medan at tabona. It's Medan dish, so you'll hear people speak in localized mandarin there. Some Manado restaurant like Sarang Oci is also good. And if you like fish, find Kepala Kakap at Medan Baru. It is Padang Restaurant. If you love milk fish, find bandeng presto at semarang restaurant. Try their lumpia, soto, or gandul while you are there. Coffee I prefer Kopi Kenangan than Fore, or better yet, Kok Tong. But these people like Kok Tong Coffee are not beating around the bush. They sell black coffee. Strong one, and very tasty. I hope you are not done exploring Indonesia. LOL. Just come, and give me a shout. I'll show you around.
Excuse me, you said you 43 ? Like the fuck, is it real or something, couse you look no way near 40 , you look teenager, or maybe look like 20-23 at most
Eating oxtail soup at Bogor Cafe is like eating chicken rice at mandarin orchard, they're good 30 years ago. Same thing with seribu rasa.
I think chicken rice at chatterbox orchard (hilton, ex mandarin) still taste good. Last time eat on May 2024.
@@LCfer Sure, but other places are better now. Like Bong tong kee, Ji de lai or tian tian.
@@irvansaid26 ah, will try later, thanks!

Any recos that's a must-try?
im a jakartan living in singapore and all i can say is that you need a local guide bro, shout out to karebosi tho! looooveee that place
Alderic, love that you are willing to go to explore indonesia, but you need a local guide my dude. Or if not, watching Mark Wiens and going to the places he ate in Indo would be a decent substitute.
I havent enjoyed a youtube this much in a while. This video was very well put together and very entertaining. Thanks alderic
thanks man, I really appreciate that.
Bro. No wonder that day my duck rice have extra duck wings.
I was in Penang and whilst trying to find the food recommendation stumble across your channel. I think i was there at the same time you were in Jakarta at fasting month. I get the gist, i hope got it right, about your preference. So here is the list that you need to try in Jakarta (better not in fasting month):
1. Ayam Goreng Berkah "Rachmat" at Melawai / Blok-M. This leaning toward Central Java Taste. Ayam Kampung for sure
Wow, so professional, this vlog!
Beg to differ. Pagi Sore is too much on the sweet side to be called proper minang/padang food. The food is good, but it’s not authentic.
After watching your entire video, it's clear you’re into food with lots of spices. You should definitely check out dishes from Eastern Indonesia. Try Ayam Woku, Tongseng, Coto (you've had it before), or maybe Tombur (this one's from North Sumatra). I'm sure you'll love them; they're packed with awesome flavors
commenting for the algo, cant wait for best nasi lemak series finale!
If you like coto, you might be have to try soto betawi next time. Eat where the local eats, mark wiens have one video about it. You have to come to where he's eat soto Betawi
And if you like sop konro with kluak, you might have to try rawon, east javan traditional food
Went to Indonesia recently and shared about my trip there in my channel. Soto betawi sounds like a must try when I return. Any more recos you have? Thank you! 🇮🇩
Konro Bakar
that must be Konro Bakar Karebosi,
they also have it in PIK,
if you want to to go culinary in Jakarta, Go To PIK
Wow had no idea you're in Jakarta. Hope you enjoyed your time and culinary adventure here despite some little mishaps!
Edit: I wish I could've recommended Banceuy Nasi Lemak to you. Always went for their nasi lemak whenever I miss Singapore nasi lemak
Jakarta Nasi lemak aka nasi uduk have several version, which type you had?
1. Morning nasi uduk, simple and comforting with not much protein selection
Random road side stall, only open till 9am
2. Night version A nasi uduk with selection ONLY Deep Fried protein of your choice. No stew, cuury, gulai, etc meal
Nasi Usuk kebon kacang
3. Night Version B nasi uduk BETAWI with lots variety of home cooked betawi style menu; jengkol, kari, petai, bihun, fritter, balado, milkfish, etc - this is my FAVOURITE CHOICE of nasi uduk
Nasi uduk Betawi Babe
4. Night Version C. Nasi uduk GORENGAN with ONLY STEW BEEF OFFAL SELECTION. Soupy and comforting
Nasi uduk Bang Hasan
5. Night Version D. A more fusion nasi uduk, with wide selection of menu, array of nasi Padang menu, warteg menu available.
Nasi uduk ibu sum
Nasi uduk thomas
6. Nasi Lemak Medan style. Totally different thing to jakarta nasi uduk
Nasi lemak pasar beruang
Nasi lemak cita rasa medan
Nasi lemak pasar duta mas
7. Nasi Gurih Aceh style. Similar to medan but simpler with additional beef jerky as the signature
Nasi uduk 77 muara karang/ duta mas
8. Nasi Gemuk Jambi. Similar to Malaysia style. With peanut, anchovies, cucumber, sambal , and Shredded beef / chicken as its signature
didnt expect u to be so funny. Ure one real humorous man😂
I think you will like the mutton soup in bukit merah view Chai Chuan Tou Yang Rou Tang.
I second this!
VERY NICELY PRESENTED BY YOU! GOOD FOOD HOST
alderic you should’ve reach out to locals im sure they would happy to give food recommendations!!! i trust locals more than the food bloggers (SORRY) especially when they’re foreigner.
funny how i see the fancy place are so so, but the unassuming place seems to have better food!
I cant describe the comfy feeling i had earlier thinking about watching your new video, but i love it
The best oxtail soup is not in Jakarta but 2 hours away (well 40 minutes now thanks to the bullet train) at Dahapati resto, Bandung city. And much much cheaper.
Deep fried duck should be eaten onsite to maintain the crispyness, warm rice, sambal.
Several version available
Most recommended MADURA STYLE WITH Black sambal
Surabaya style,
But noted, indonesia duck quite small and dry especially cheap road side madura stalll
The most important component is the black sauce.
For surabaya style, more plump duck. You can try Bebek tepi sawah(balinese influence Surabaya style), Akibat bebek Muda or Bebek Kaleyo.
And be mind. Indinesia standard for duck dish, STRICTLY NO GAMEYNESS
So might not suit your palate. As a sporean, eat duck must have duck meat flavor(gamey)
But this not applicable in jakarta
So be prepare, chicken and duck meat not so much difference due to Indonesian preference preparation
The recipe is different from the one u get in SG.
hmmm, i backpack jakarta many years ago, i think my fav dish there was wonton mee
If you come to Bangkok you should try out some Nasi Lemak! We don’t do it but there’s a few restaurants here. Dying to know if they’re actually good
Although that sup buntut is popular, but you won't find shiokness in sup buntut. It is comfort food. Like you order and soup.
I believe that is not even top 5 Martabak manis in Jakarta. Way too healthy. :)
Coto Makasar & konro are heavy flavor.
I could recommend more if you need ^^
Oh and of course nasi padang! How could I forget to mention it 😂 also nasi campur bali and crispy duck rice from bali/surabaya
All of these can be found in jakarta!
Guess you're staying at Menteng Park apartment! You should went for bakmie roxy (chicken noodle), just 500m away from there 😃
Singaporean here who visits Jakarta from time to time. Long story short, Indonesia has a lot of variety across regions, and not all of the tasty dishes are as well known internationally. Some other interesting places / cuisines to check out if you ever visit again:
Nasi Padang:
The proper kind where everything is served at the table, and you pay for what you eat. Pagi Sore from one of the comments below is good, or even good old Sederhana. Everything from Ayam pop (close style to what you had at Mat Lengket), Gulai telur, Beef brains, Nangka (Jackfruit), etc
Sambal:
If you thought Taliwang's was good, the Sambal Ijo at padang places will blow it out of the water. Also worth trying Sambal Balado, Sambal Matah if you see them.
Satay:
So much variety. Of course roadside places are most authentic, Sate Senayan would be good for a first timer to try different types. Nasi padang places would also serve Sate padang (saucier with different meat options).
Restaurant Chains:
A Fung is analagous to Yong Tau Foo, quite interesting soup with a nice shallot oil
Bakmi GM is the most popular noodle chain, a little salty for my taste (I prefer Bakmi Roxy)
Solaria's Kwetiau goreng sapi and fried rice is a bit under the radar
Remboelan is not my favorite, but convenient chain to try many different regional specialties
Regional:
Acehnese (Ayam Tangkap at Kanabu Benhil is great)
Sundanese (If you ever go to Bandung, check out Natuna for ayam goreng, Serayu for Cuanki)
Manado, Madura, Yogya and so much more.
Local guide definitely recommended overall, and just take Grab/Gojek everywhere lah ;) Grabfood works well too.
saving this list was Jakarta part 2!
@@Alderic.No need lah, later you will say A Fung soup is using sachet ingredients😂😂
10:22 i cant wrap my head around this. Theres no way youre over the age of 30🤯🤯🤯
He said at the start that the cafe was popular in the 90s before he was born though so even if its 1990, bro is at most 34
@@Rasengandattebayo82he said 43 yrs of his life?
Cheers!🍻
I definitely will the next time around!
@@Alderic. please do! 🙏 And if you’re looking for someone to go around with, try to get someone with no dietary restrictions so you can get the full experience. Looking forward to welcome you back to our country! 🍻
So, next trip straight to Makassar?
Great to see that the last day managed to give a memorable meal to save the trip. Also I thought you looked like you were in your late 20s so i'm quite surprised😂
your videos are great very entertaining to watch man! keep it up!
Should have tried padang food and spicier stuff on first couple of days.
oh I need to get some sate on my next trip. my fav has to be the beef ribs! so much fun just eating it off the bone just like them old cartoons.
Time to save this video for the next makan meal. 😂
What a great story😂
@Alderic: Are you able to pls suggest some good Indonesian food that we can get in Singapore? e.g. Nasi Uduk/ Konro etc.
YahLah... Watching your videos always gets me craving to try the food you recommend/ review (so quite dangerous to view Alderic's videos at 9pm supper time, without getting hungry!). But!! Thanks for your videos! (p/s: Your Day1-Day3 disappointments = imply you need a Local "Fixer" or Food Guide? Perhaps that's your "next Arc"/ Food adventure series?)
No gulai fish head?! No bakmi?! So sorry to hear about your trip, please do come back because we have a lot more to give! 🫶🏼
Just like what others recommends: Nasi Padang is a must, PAGI SORE! hope this helps!
perhaps you should consider going to a smaller restaurant next time as they tend to have better food.
You look like you just graduated uni bro! no way 43
Visit another city next time, like Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya!
I think you visited all the wrong places in jakarta. Lol.
drop some recommendations please! 1 or 2 will do. I'll save them for the second round.
Eat where the local eat...some of the high end restaurant change of the og flavour to match the foreigner bud taste
@@xixixipeoplok where do you local ppl usually eat? What eatery? What area? C'mon spill it!
Just go where lot of local and family business/traditional like the last place is the best 😅 even lot of rich person in indo do this 😁
43? Yo you look like a 30 year old dude
I kinda feel bad for your trip, but i have a tips for you! Maybe next time you are going to a country first time, contact an influencer that can act as a guide for you, because im sorry but you missed so much from Indonesia😢 have a nice trip next time!
indonesian currency is suck , thats why singaporean / australian feel like king here
If you want to have a local guide in one of city in Indonesia(Makassar where i lived) i can guide you through to check out some our local dishes simply because if you travel alone you might having hard time a bit because unlike Malaysia Singapore or Philippines Indonesian not have that much English speaker here hence why the barista messed up your order.
I'm glad out of all local dishes you tried out Makassar dishes comes out top 2 maybe when you actually comes here you can tried out more variety from our other local dishes and i'll gladly guide you through as i want to introduced my local dishes to international audience

bro i mean, when u say eat good food and suddenly i saw u eat an oxtail soup for 33 dollars, my brain rots
Come again with local people
Jakarta is a place even Indonesians don't want to live there. Wait, did you say you are 43?
there's no way you're 43!
Only the last 2 places is the locals top picks 😭 I'm questioning your research methods like there's literally many ways to get the right & worthy places to eat in Jakarta on the internet
I have since gotten a lot of recommendations from locals. shall visit Jakarta again next year! may I know what's a good resource for finding places to eat in Jakarta?
should've gone to street foods instead of these high end places tbh
drop some recommendations please! 1 or 2 will do. I'll save them for the second round.
A nearly tragedy food trip. Maybe you should have opened the 3rd unmarked food package. I was surprised when you mentioned that you are 43yos. I thought you are in your late 20s.
Pls share your excel template. I'm also that girl who does excel for food.
Do not trust google search result, they are basically an ad, even youtube reviewer is hit and miss. Interesting you like FORE though, i guessed everyone had different tastebud. I recommended to avoid Hotel and Mall food for memorable dish. Just ask GRAB or GOJEK driver where they would eat for a good food, You might get pleasantly surprised.
you dont really need to go to restaurant in jakarta to find good food, just ask local they will show you cheap and good food
You went to wrong places for those 3 days. You should have googled nasi uduk beforehand, the equivalent of nasi lemak. Then Nasi padang, then all the good Chinatown fares, soto, sop, etc
drop some recommendations please! 1 or 2 will do. I'll save them for the second round.
All the spot you went were meh by jakartans standard except the coto makassar 😂
drop some recommendations please! 1 or 2 will do. I'll save them for the second round.
@@Alderic. since jakarta is quite a big city, i suggest you go to area that 's best known for its foods. Like kelapa gading or pantai indah kapuk, pasar baru or tanah abang and many other area. And after you decide which area, then i'll be able to give recommendations. If not then the spot i recommend will be too far to each other and trust me, jakarta traffic is a nightmare 💞
But if you insist i'll give some recommendations
1. Konro bakar marannu or konro bakar karebosi. Both are rivals and only tens metre apart
2. Gado2 boplo
3. Rumah makan padang sinar minang
4. Asinan berawi H. Asymuni
5. Soto mie kota udang (this one is a hidden gem, only known by few)
6. Soto betawi globe H. Oji
7. Kari bihun lam
8. Rumah makan medan baru (try their burung goreng)
9. Rumah makan manado beautika
10. Noodles (too many to mention)
11. Mie kangkung jimmy
why not finale !
still cooking. next week!
Malaysia > Indonesia and Singapore
what’s your secret to looking so young omg

Jakarta is one of the places I swear I'd never go... The food is really bad (even though my friend is a local) and the service staff aren't the brightest if I'm being honest.
first
you need a local guide bro. what do you eat just a random restaurant.not even the speciality
To be very honest most of the foods you ate here are the angmoh places😂 who recommend you these? 😭 you should come back and eat the local faves. Sop konro is the only good thing you visited.
Mug
Why the ox tail soup dont look thicken by the ox tail gelatin at all
I need the secret to your youth. Now. 🔫
almost 100% sure it's a random soup cooked in another stock pot, which was pretty disappointing.
Definitely need a better guide as the country cuisine is very complex and diverse while most information isn’t available in English.
are u really 43 yrs old???
Like the fuck, is it real or something, couse you look no way near 40 , you look teenager, or maybe look like 20-23 at most
Why didn't u ask ur Indo viewers before coming? Those places are definitely not representative of our food standard
drop some recommendations please! 1 or 2 will do. I'll save them for the second round.
