Ohhh this is awesome! As a huge Clive Barker fan and long time reader/watcher/collector of anything Hellraiser/Night Breed/Tortured Souls (of which would like to see more of), this was perfect timing as a wonderful reminder of the lore. Really well done!
I’m pretty sure we are the same person. Hahaha! I have all of the Tortured Souls. I didn’t think anyone out there still remember those. Saw NB in the theater in 8th grade, and just said “Yes. This will be my life’s obsession.”😂
If Disney actually wanted to make money, they would just go all-out and make an NC-17 series on the lore of classic Hellraiser for streaming. They could put it on Disney+ and make a big production of needing a second password to open it to make sure no kids would ever see it. As in require that second password to be entered manually each time before an episode can be streamed, and maybe even have an image of the Lament configuration on that login screen and a "photo negative" version of the Disney+ logo in a corner . That alone would entice people into enjoying it...which is both ironic and appropriate.
I never really thought about it but I believe the Doc was just a lackey for Nyalathotep. The black pyramid/Black Triangle is the usual symbolism associated with the Black Pharaoh.
No, that wasn't a cenobite. The doctor was probably a servant of Yog Sothoth, and the black pyramid is a Lovecraftian thing associated with the Black Pharaoh. Clive and HP have overlap, but they aren't fully interchangeable.
you know i thought there was just the puzzle box until watching the comics on here, Mr H Reviews does them brilliantly on here. then i saw there was a snow globe and lots of others so, if the door opened was not to Laviathan, no doubt it was to some other corner of hell.
2 weeks old... but to the best of my knowledge all of Clive Barkers books are part of a shared universe. This doesn't apply so much to the movies based on them. I haven't read everything I don't think, but I've read a lot of his stuff and the short stories. Night Breed, The Hell Raiser stuff (as the movies are titled), and the D'amore stuff (which inspired movies like Lord Of Illusions) all exist in the same universe. One of the last things I read by him was called "The Scarlet Gospel" ... (Spoilers Below, but this is to explain how the literary universe works and some of the connections) ... which had The Engineer... the guy we call "Pinhead" in the movies (Pinhead is revealed as an insulting name for him in the books) killing every mortal user of magic in the world over a period of time to absorb their power, with the intent of overthrowing his own order (The Order Of Gash is what they call the Cenobites in the books) and taking over hell. An investigation by Harry D'amore brings him into this mess and he winds up in hell to act as a "witness" (in the biblical sense) to events as Pinhead leads his revolution, eventually finding the "Tomb" of the long missing Lucifer who had attempted Suicide and actually just kind of put himself into a coma. Reviving the devil to defeat and replace him, Pinhead even with pretty much all the magic in the world loses, and The Devil in his rage collapses hell before entering the world, with Harry who witnessed these events returning to earth and gaining new spiritual powers to commune with the dead for reasons I won't go into. At any rate this ties those together, and I'm pretty sure in various short stories Clive made it clear that the "Nightbreed" stuff and "Midian" exist in the same universe, though I am not entirely sure how say Cabal scales against The Devil as they are both supposed to be divine level powers. Perhaps when they resolve this (if there are new books) it will come down to The Devil fighting The God Of Monsters or something. His stuff stands alone, and I admit it's been many years since I've read a lot of it, but like Steven King, if you read a lot of his work, it's pretty obvious how much it crosses over in odd ways even when it's not as overt as King's "Dark Tower" which spelled a lot of it out. To the best of my knowledge the Hellraiser comics (by Checker) are not canonical to any of the written stuff, following more of the movie universe's logic. I mean I could have some stuff wrong, but this is how I remember it... I think doing an extended horror movie universe out of this could be cool myself, but the truth is I think right now the way things were individually licensed already would make it very difficult to do. Given the recent attempt to reboot "Hellraiser" I'd expect someone probably has a lot of money already invested in that and it wouldn't be cheap just to use that part of it. Not to mention that while I thought a lot of them were okay, I don't remember most of Clive Barker's other stuff being all that successful when it was used for movies.
The clown cenobite is just stupid. It was already established that if a kid opened the box or any other gateway, the Cenobites would just give them a warning and leave. There were only occasional exceptions, like Chatterer
So you’re saying they still do take kids, also hell changes, rules come and go, and every now and again pinhead starts an uprising and becomes a bug general almost starting hell on earth just to get a promotion from leviathan.
Accept there’s nothing about the kids being in hell from solving any gateway. It’s literally just Keith Sweat gone to hell. So the plan was there to entertain them. So they found one isn’t stupid you just didn’t listen.

0:33 it’s not that they don’t differentiate, it’s more about the idea of pushing the limits of what you feel. It was never about pleasure or pain but the depth of how far you can sink into the it. That’s the true idea of hedonism, pain is just a good way to push that boundary
I have an old memory of a cross over series of Night Breed vs Cenobites. It was done in 3 graphics. First the Cenobites invade Midia and during the fight The 3 Chosen Cenobites kidnapped Baphote (sp?) and take him to the Labyrinth. Second the remaining Night Breed attack the Labyrinth and attempt to save their kidnaped God. However ... The Grand Finale was Leviathan and Baphote combing their forces to free their captured sister Tyrial so that the 3 Gods could complete their destiny. Am I just an old geezer who is confused
It is said that they balance pain and pleasure and that they are called both demons and angels HOWEVER, Leviathan is one of the Kings of Hell; He takes the form of a dragon that lives under the sea. They are in fact demons. There is nothing pleasurable about the torture they inflict...maybe for them.
