      I have loved the FE since my first car, a 1968 Galaxie 500 with a 390. When I junked it, I put the engine and transmission in a different '68 Galaxie with a freeze-busted 390 which had more goodies, like air conditioning and power front disc brakes. Both had automatic transmissions, neither had a C6.

    I actually love the 289 and 302 small blocks. I have owned everything from a 300 ci 6 (actually 2), 250 i6, 302, 351 C, 390 and 429. Loved all of them, but the small blocks are strong, reliable engines, out of the box, and with littke more than a few bolt-ons, the HP can best 300 HP. And with a little more money on heads, valve train, induction and exhaust, can push 375 + HP, and these little blocks will handle it.

    great video, I really don't like all the boys that " lets drop in an LS", I have always believed in a Ford in a Ford even during the Y Block days. I also think the 302 is the best small block choice and the 385 series for the big block because of block and parts availability. The 429 showed up in the 1968 T-Bird and ran till 1976 in the pickup, 460started in 1972 T-Bird and ran till 1997 pickup. The 429 was offered in the F100 for 2 years, not sure which mid 70's. But I still like the FE for '58 thru '68 builds Love the Cleveland, but block and parts availability are a Problem. Really like your videos and the information you put out, keep it up.

  • @thewyattfletcher
    @thewyattfletcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    The 351w would be my choice. It will do almost anything you'd wanna do, and they're as plentiful as the 302, including factory roller engines. It will essentially fit in every chassis that the 302 will, though in some applications, you'd have to source mounts and headers the just as you would for a big block in some other cars. While only marginally more expensive to build, all the parts you need/want for a 302 build are readily available for a 351W. Headers, manifolds, heads, accessory brackets, oil pans, etc., it's all available. Even stroker kits for the 351w cost about the same as 302 kits, and the machining is essentially the same, but in the end you'll have 50-75 cubes more displacement. That means big block power in a small block package. It means the ability to handle turbos without worrying about block splitting. It means you can build a milder combo and get the same power, but better drivability and durability. The only exception I'd make to the 351w suggestion is if you're intending to build a high rev'ing NA engine. Then yeah, 302. Or maybe there's a destroked 351w kit out there? Gotta ask the googles that one.

    • @et76039
      @et76039 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The 351W does have some slight fitment issues in the pre-1969 chassis, due to deck height. Stock driver's side exhaust manifold may rest on the stock steering box. I know one guy who has one in a '66 Fairlane and bought headers that the manufacturer said would fit, but don't.

    • @thewyattfletcher
      @thewyattfletcher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@et76039 Indeed, there are some issues that will need to be resolved with some applications, again, no different than mounting a 385 series big block in others. There are mounts designed to offer adjustability (including lowering the mounting of the engine), and yes, finding the right exhaust manifolds or headers in those applications may be challenging. But I'm reminded of how it was commonly recommended and common practice to dent headers to fit in some applications. And really, if a 302 based engine is the better fit for whatever reason (convenience or fit or cost or availability or whatever), sure, do that.

Tough to beat that price, even at a local builder, and probably not a 6-9 month wait. I have everything I need pretty much, to unbolt and bolt it all back together. I have to get another balancer and flexplate, since the balance is different than my current engine.

Bigger, heavier car would at least warrant a 351W (with good heads,cam, intake, etc) for the torque to move it around, even if the car’s not going to be burning up any tracks or back streets. @@Rendezvous70 But the racing FEs (427's) were side oilers. They're impossible to find because the racers eventually blew them all up. The funny thing is that skirted blocks were considered old technology for years, which they were, but now the modern engines like the LS and Godzilla use skirted blocks because they're better. The Ford's Achilles heel has ALWAYS been it's exhaust port design which was compromised to fit in shock tower bodies. The odd thing too is it's easier to replace plugs and headers on a 385 series than an FE in a Mustang or Fairlane. I know guys who would rather sell their FE powered Mustangs than do a compression test.

      There are still really good FEs out there, but they are pricey unless you are buddies with the builder. A lot of it is bullshit. People expect them to be expensive, so the builders oblige. I can put a 500 hp 500 ft lb FE together cheap. Aholes recover 5 yrs overhead on one build.

      I would go for the D3TE heads with big chambers and flat top pistons with the single eyebrow. The 68-71 heads detonate, 72 s are the worst. Any head after 73 when they increased the deck height are better. The deck was raised to 10.320, and the single eyebrow forged pistons come up to 0 deck with the 466, that’s a .030 over 460. Aluminum heads take a lot of weight off but will still be 100 more than the FE, it weighs about the same as a 351W after chucking the iron intake manifold for aluminum.

      Possibly. The 221-302 fords are narrower than a SBC. More clearance for headers, steering shafts, brake booster, etc. Potential issue is location of the oil pump, the SBF in the front vs the SBC's rear. Potential interference with the crossmember/steering rack has to be taken into account. The SBF has an advantage in the transmission department due to the cheap availability of Mustang II V8 parts. MII's used a smaller 148 tooth flywheel/flex plate in both auto and manual config. The MII bellhousing for the C4 is considerably smaller than anything available for the SBC. MII's also used a unique oil pan. The pan is nice if you absolutely need clearance but windage could be a potential issue.

    Jeff...... I agree with about 90% of your views on this. The 302 IS the easiest Engine to build, from mild to wild!!
    Big Blocks are FUN! 😁 But can get expensive as quickly as they run. Not to mention the dismal Fuel Economy!!
    But my first choice for what I'd want to drive (midsize or Pony), is the 351 Windsor. Sure it costs a little more than any 302...
    But in the case of the Mustang, a number of Companies make Headers (Shorty and Long Tube), Mounts, all Accessory Brackets, and a choice of Intake Manifolds.
    You'll get MORE TORQUE than a 350 Chevy (insert butthurt Chevy Fanboys now!!). 86 and up Blocks are Roller ready, and the sweet GT40 Heads top it all off nicely!! 😊👍👍
    It's NOT a screamer. Just know that. But the long Stroke and Long Rods, make it an extremely durable and Long lasting Street Engine!
    YES, 347 Kits are plentiful and make good Power easily. BUT, the Piston Pins run INTO the Ring Lands, and they have almost no Piston Skirts...
    That makes them more prone to Piston Slap, earlier, than any other Ford Engine.
    But if it's a Weekend Warrior and you don't EXPECT it to last long, then the 347 is a great SMALL potent package, that fits in ANYTHING that a 289/302 fits.
    When I used to build Engines, I found that the best combination was a .040" over 302 Block, with a Custom Ground 3.25" Stroke Crank...
    Makes a dead reliable 331 without the issues that can't be engineered out of the 347.
    It's that "Magic" combination, like dare I say - the 327 Chevy!!
    Custom Grind Cranks ARE expensive. I'm just a little surprised that the 331 never caught on. It really is a solid Motor! 😊

      Carmine, the 351W was a true smogger. The heads that they had from the get go were barely able to get a 289 enthused. There are better heads now. The magazine guys have tried for a few decades to bury the FE. Lol. 😂 but the truth is the truth, but you have new components now and as soon as they bury the FE, the price will go up on W stuff to get everyone on the FI 4 valve stuff. Welcome to Ford Politics! Sadly they unlike GM eat their own. They ruled everything with the FE, nothing sold on the street you have had to be a devoted Ford guy. You can build a Ford FE stroker or a W stroker… do you see a pattern here? A 385, you need to get Kaase stuff, Ford attempts have been surprisingly lame on the 385, and to get good stuff it aftermarket… I m not falling for it. If I have to spend money to build a 463 FE to make 700 hp, I’m still using a Dump Truck block and a roller valvetrain I’ve had for 15 years. I’m ahead that far in the game.

      @@fenatic7484 Absolutely correct. I can tell by that name, that you're a FE kind of guy!! Great, STRONG Engines, IF you know what you're doing. Over 80% of the FE Engines that went through our Shop, had Head Planing done WITHOUT Manifold matching. As you probably know with that design, that's a recipe for sucking Oil in from BOTH the Valley AND the Valve Cover areas!!
      I was a Ford Line Tech.... VERY well acquainted with Ford Politics.
      Like I said, GT40 or similar PORTED Heads can make a 351W actually work.... as long as you don't need or want power above 5500RPM. It's a STREET Engine, and a pretty good one.
      Now, one of the favorite cars I've owned, was a 71 Torino - that I shoved a 428 in. It was a Dream!
      .... But later, I tried CRAMMING a 390 into a Foxbody..... that was a Nightmare!!

    I’m a little late to the party but the thing a lot of people miss about 351C parts is they share a BUNCH with the 351M and 400. You can get a running 351M for 200-300 and with an EGR delete, timing adjustment and a proper carb tune they make decent power out of the box. Obviously if you’re building it, there’s aftermarket parts available for 351M/400 and the 351C that address a lot of the year by year engineering issues, like the nylon timing chain, flat piston heads and intake restriction. While the 351C for the boss is rare, there’s the Q code used in some torinos and police cars and other places to find the 4V parts. If you do your research, you can have a relatively reliable and powerful engine for less than 1k and a beast for around 3k (google a 444 stroker kit, I dare you)

So finding one isn’t hard or expensive. Everything from the 302 will bolt except the intake manifold. You do need one specific to the 351w since it’s the same thing only has a taller deck height. I agree, and you can bore your 390 .030 over add a stroker kit for a 445. 585 hp and 550 ft lbs was what Power Nation that has Pat Topolinsky on it. He built it. You can even just do a 1 cube per ci 416 with 410 Mercury crank that built right with stock and a few aftermarket pieces 500 ft lbs and 450 hp doing it yourself all the cleaning and stuff and assembly ,it’s no more expensive than dropping a 302 at a shop and having them do the whole thing for 325 hp. The beauty is the memory of busted knuckles and smelling like parts cleaner and being able to say, yeah I built it!

    I'm a long time fan of the nearly unbreakable 390/428. Can't afford the 427 critters but they earned their accolades in the 60's. I've had 2 of the 351c 2v engines and they're great street engines. 251w engines are all over, but you gotta make people wise to.the crap the government is pushing to take used vehicles and parts out of circulation to push the EV agenda. I built a 1991 251w +.030 , a little extra cam over stock HO cam for that year and somehow lost my emissions in iowa, so I got a nice dual plane intake and 750cfm combo from edelbrock, I believe the cam was a crower, and it had tri Y afterburner headers on it when it rolled in. Believe it or not the thing got more mileage out of a tank.of gas after 300.miles than it was said to have new. The cr was 9.32 or 9.35:1. It's been 25 years. The axle gears stayed the same and the AODE was untouched other than.filter and fluid change.
    I borrowed it a few times when moving and when my soft top jeep couldn't warm the engine firing a cold snap. Even with 4x4 and extended cab it had lots of enthusiasm under the right pedal. Where before the thought was ti find better gears after thenrevmbuild, we all thought it was fine after. In fact the ratio was 3.25 but all that got changed out was the open dif for a Detroit unit. This truck went hunting a lot and fishing. If it had been a swb pickuo.it may have been ok.as a 2wd but that long wheelbase made the don't get pushed and taught the younger ones about approach and departure angles running stock size bfg all terrain tires. It had better heat and better rain resistance than.mynlittle cj7, but it wasn't nimble like the jeep off road. Sometimes i wish i had the space to park it at my place. I'd have kept it for towing and those mornings my nipples were able to cut diamonds
