I have many connections with Avery Park, since my family's property (the onetime Brook Lane Dairy) occupied the opposite bank of Marys River. My Mom helped plant the rose garden. Probably the oldest park in town, it was the scene of many city-wide celebrations, reunion picnics, etc. The main part is an old-growth grove of white fir, which I hope is still intact. There was a boat launch for canoes, and people actually swam in Marys River, when it was dammed downstream to create a log pond for the lumber mill. The river is free-flowing now, and much less polluted.
