That sucks, sorry to hear. My 3D modeling teacher told us to have 3 copies of all our important o work. 1 In the cloud, one in your main computer and another one in an external drive. That way you're always covered. He recommended doing a backup every week.
My code teacher told me to make 7 copies and he personally backs up his stuff on 7 different drives that he has in different households and storage boxes. Crazy but i suppose even if your whole house fell in a sink hole your still covered

I lost 10 years of work and my real work industry portfolio. When my computer crashed after fleeing an unsafe environment. Couldn’t get a job in the field. It has taken me another 10 years working three jobs at times while raising children as a single mother just to afford a new industry standard computer. Starting over from scratch is one thing when you no longer have the time. What are dreams and ambitions when there are more than just battles and wars over what you want to do with your life. I’m glad that you are able still do what you want to do. The cards are not there for me.

I recently tried to recover some lost data (after a recent HD bricking) from an external HD but the last time I used it was two years ago... So much progress lost.
I once lost a 5 hours work. It was painfull because I eated very late that day for finish the art... I cannot event process how painfull would be to lost TWO YEARS of productive work. I'm someone who is very paranoid whith lost things, and since I've heared the aneccdote of the creator of the web comic "Castoff" (Her house went burn when she wasn't in and she lost everything) I became EVEN more paranoid about lossing my proyects. So I finally got an external hard drive and I'm getting a cloud subscription. I hope that makes me less paranoid. At least most of my character are onlyne so If I lost them I can recover them there 😅
Have you consider contacting a data recovery company to get back your work? This is a hard lesson to learn. 1) Always back up your work. 2) Consider switching to a solid state drive as they are more durable.
It'd definitely too late by now. Data recovery is possible cause what gets erased is the indexing. But the moment you start adding new things to the computer or moving things around the data gets overwritten.
This made me feel a little lightheaded😅 This is why I back up the same files on two to three hard drives and planning to use cloud storage soon. My heart palpitates when I think about all the artwork and paid digital products I have.
Something similar also happened to me recently, honestly what a coincidence to find this in my recommended. Lost like.. 3 years of my art because my ipad got burned from overheating. Guess i cooked to hard (haha) anyways i learned my lesson and that is to not overcharge your devices, don't put them on top of flammable things and always backup your artwork. It stings a bit but it is what it is, we just have to keep moving forward and learn from past mistakes

I am so sorry this happened to you! As an artist, and writer, this is my worst nightmare.... I haven't ever dealt with data loss on that scale, but I do have experiences with destroyed hard drives in the past and it convinced me to switch over to only using SSD's. I don't recommend dropping those either LOL but they are a lot more sturdy and less prone to failure overall.
My crappy pc literally went up in flames causing me to lose everything including my only way to draw digitally if it wasn't for me having an equally crappy computer at work (which i have to be careful of when i draw) i would have given up completely so your not alone and for that very reason you'll get through it as long as your desire to create doesn't waver....hope this helps you or anyone going through something
Last year I lost my drive of basically all the creative stuff I have done since I was 14 maybe. (in my later 30s now). I was able to recover like 5% from other drives. The drive actually failed during a backup routine. I know the feeling. But I also know deep inside that if I have made it once I can do it better next time!

sorry that happened to you. I had lost 113gb or 3yrs of music before. Backing up is important. Though I admit, In some ways, I've adapted to things I didn't think of before.
I have most stuff on the cloud and I always transfer my finished art to my phone. Sometimes just the picture and sometimes the full art file. I hope that's enough to keep my stuff safe 😭

One time I wanted to save something else on it - and the drive did never again connect and all my files were gone. I was terrified but there was nothing I could do... All was gone. At least it was only my "career start" and it mostly was school work so yeah, I lived on without it. But it is so cruel nonetheless. Having digital work I try to save everything at least 2 times - but I am always afraid about loosing it. And I am not saving regularly enough sadly ... what i should do though...
Can relate on some level, while not 500GB of work like you i lost about 60 hours of work of my 3D character porject on Zbrush. Wanted to commit Seppuku at that moment. Did you try maybe finding an expert who specializes in retrieving files from broken and damaged devices, hard drives and such? Maybe not all is lost yet
When I took my pc to a shop to clone one of my drives, I lost a bunch of work because they didn't listen to me when I told them to keep the stuff on the other one. I took a moment to mourn the loss of my files and knew that it was just time to update my work. I'm glad my professors always told me to back up my work in multiple places because some files I ended up finding duplicated elsewhere. So yes, BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP IN MORE THAN ONE PLACE!
Man, every digital artists worst nightmare! I can relate, about a year ago I lost all of my original files for my webcomic. So now I cant even go back to fix them up. I took some time off from uploading and eventually just stopped all together. I've kept drawing but decided to pursue a new project. A fresh start with a clean slate! I'll eventually get back to work on that webcomic but for now I've been having fun with the new material.

having everything in just one hard drive without backups in at least a couple of other ones is always a big no no make it a habit to make backups and always update the copies with every major progress sometimes even little ones in case something goes wrong maybe some data could still be salvaged if you have it checked by an HDD specialist, there's cases where investigations still manage to get evidence from disposed HDDs that are heavily damaged, though it could be very expensive

@@FifiMangaka This happen to my moms SSD with a hardware failure this will cost you a lot of money to recuperate and you need it to sent to a german data recovery center, with cost to shipping and testing if they can recuperate using a cloning drive technique. They will have to buy another similar model SSD and copy the data from the broken one. No magical software recovery will ever work and don't bother with other software if you can't read the SSD or it won't start, there is no point, only the data recovery center has the means and testing if it has a chance to be recovered. Speaking from experience and lots of arguing with my parents because they thought they will get scammed even if their own son knows how to do proper data recovery and follow the procedure when they upped the cost they went ballistic and I paid out of my pocket for the rest. Ofc they thought I was giving more money to the scammer even with receipts and real proper documents attesting that their are a legit business. I vowed from that day I will never help them if they lost data, it's good as lost in my book. But from this experience you might have a real chance to get back your data, good luck. (The data recover center is only one in Germany you can find it searching online)
This is why I have multiple expansion drives. People laughed and thought I was wasting vast amounts of money when purchasing them back in the day before 2020 showed up. Everything ready. Its also why I don´t save everything to the cloud. The cloud is used to write papers which are used later for editing. They are saved on an expansion drive.

That's why I've always saved media onto usb and hard drives. I treat the things I create like classified U.F.O documents. trust no one

i recently lost my portfolio flash drive with all of my digital art on it. Im trying hard not to panic !!! lol , this is why I keep a few sketchbooks
