I sang this in college, and then ended up accompanying a number of singers afterwards. I'd not thought about the song in 45 years and for some reason tonght began singing it, and remembered Frijsh's recording. I am thrilled, and moved to see and hear it here. Thank you!

This was one of the first songs I ever learned when I started to study singing. It is a charming piece :) I haven't thought about it in more than 40 years!

One of our Philosophy professors sang this when Randall Thompson came to our campus-Emory & Henry College-in 1981.

i love frijsh and have her complete recordings. beside being admired by the wonderful mabel mercer , she was very much admired by k.flagstad. i sang this song when i was in a choir when i was twelve and have actually included it in my cabaret shows. so beautiful. thanks for posting.

J'apprécie cette version de Velvet shoes, ça me semble plus juste et précise.

One could wish that Povla Frijsh were better known, but the nature of her singing would be so utterly foreign to modern ears that there is no breaching the chasm dividing her world as a recitalist and present-day ideals and aesthetics of singing. I first heard of Frijsh in discussion with the singer Mabel Mercer, who was deeply interested in Povla Frijsh's near-metaphysical approach to song.
