Hello and welcome to my review of the new Triumph Street Cup. It's based on the Street Twin but in my preferred cafe racer style.
I've tried to make this as comprehensive and accurate as possible but if I haven't answered any question you may have or I may have made a factual inaccuracy (cock up) then please do comment and I'll explain or apologise! :-)

Beautiful color combinations and fit and finish , I am seriously thinking of trading in my Harley for something lighter and simpler and I think this is it .
Light-years beyond Harley, you will not be disappointed. Go for it.
It's Tally Ballyhard to believe you'd need many cooling fins in the weather you guys in England ride in. Every ride is below 20 degrees. You almost need the thermostat on your cooling system, just to warm up the engine.
Pretty? Its adorable.
You can take off the seat cowl and there's seat below. I have the seat cowl on my 2005 T100. And there are finger tight bolts holding it on.

Oh, the idea behind the small fly screen is to force air up from it, pushing the higher up air up as well. Like a small wall of wind.
I have a generic one on my T100. I just couldn't justify the price of the triumph brand. Maybe some day. I did spring 200 bucks for Triumph bar end mirrors. They do look and are better. But not really 200 bucks worth.

Ah, I was riding in 39°C this summer! The cooling fan was on all the time so maybe the fins do help a tad? Not just cosmetic…
I had the old Thruxton 900 that you could remove the seat cowl easily enough too…

The demo got my curious into whether this bike would do for a pair of lady friends....so I googled "two ladies one street cup"....BIG MISTAKE!

I always loved the old Thruxton, but having never ridden it. The new Thruxton is the most beautiful bike ever made, and worthy of it's name. The new Street Cup is what the old Thruxton always should have been, and shows that Triumph is shooting for the stars. What a fantastic company.
Remember watching this last year, as I was deciding on which bike to buy. Ultimately I went with the Street Twin and I have no regrets about that choice. It really is a great bike!
However, I am now thinking of switching out the handlebars for the Street Cup bars. The Black Ace Handlebars, I believe they're named. Just to switch it up for the Spring and Summer months. As for when I ride in the Fall and Winter months here in the States, I install my touring windshield and will be going back to the standard ST handlebars. ;-)
Do you recommend this bike for someone who is just starting out riding, but i'm also 6'4 about 190lbs... thoughts?
I would suggest a bike with straight bars to start with like the scrambler or T100 or even T120 is the insurance isn't too bad... Or a street triple? You might be a bit cramped on the street cup...
Hi Capt. How was the switch from the Street Cup to the Thruxton?
It’s really as you’d expect. The Thruxton is heavier but with more grunt. Doesn’t need to be revved and really does accelerate quicker! So heavier to push around as well, and slightly slower to turn in but still a brilliant bike.
Excellent review. No need for twin discs with ABS just try reverse braking, back brake first, you can't lock up the rear wheel.I also trail the back brake when cornering fast

Love your post. I enjoy your energy. Just bought a new 2017 street cup in the same silver and black that you had in the video. $2000 below the sticker of $10500 as it's last years model. A pretty good deal I think. So far having a great time getting to know it. Very different than my 2004 Bullet Sixty-5 royal enfield. Which is the only other bike I've ever owned. Thanks for the post.
That's a very good deal! well done! I would have thought that it IS very different! An excellent choice... Don't forget to let me know what you think after a longer period... I haven't heard many long term ownership stories on this bike, which would normally mean that nothing is wrong...

Great review as always, Captain! Have been looking forward to your Street Cup review for awhile now, NOT disappointed! I made it through the whole video with ease. You're making my dedication to getting a Thruxton R more difficult to commit to.. they're both such beautiful bikes. Well hopefully I decide when the time comes ;)

If you can afford it and don't particularly need a lighter bike, then the Thruxton is much more fun due to the power, but the street cup is more useable in town and city riding...
I think that would be my way of deciding... :-) You're right that they both look stunning..

is it the some brake systeme and suspension then the thruxton standard. I'm between the cup, thruxton s and r haha
No it isn't. The Thruxton and R have twin front discs whereas the cup doesn't. The Thruxtons are heavier bikes too, so the suspension is different too.

Ah, sorry about that. When I edit, I do turn down the output volume to lower than 0db, so should be ok... Maybe I should put a warning at the beginning of each of my videos stating WARNING: TURN DOWN YOUR VOLUME!

Great review again captain nice take on a cafe racer. Had a sit on one at my dealers fit on it better than the thurxton am a bit short in the arms. Watched your review you did on the old bonneville and thurxton. I picked the bonneville in the end though I bought it before watching it but still helped that I made the right decision. 🏍 thanks again

They do indeed. There doesn't seem to be much negative to report about them. They are managing to find all the different markets well... :-)

Wben you were riding at 65mph speed, due to wind, side wind, was there a slight shake in the motorcycle making you feel a bit uneasy ? It happens when I ride on my Street cup.
Gosh, it was a while ago now but I didn't notice anything at the time so I'd have to say no I didn't... Id check your head bearing... I know that some have an issue with them. My Thruxton R had it's head bearing replaced under warranty..
First of all, love the reviews! Finally someone who has a personality and can hold my attention for more than a few minutes. I hardly noticed that this was 40 minutes long. Now for the bike. I have just finished my break in miles on my Street Cup, and I couldn’t be happier. I’m just at 5’4 and this is not only my first “big” bike, it’s also my first bike that’s not a dirt only. I would have loved a Thruxton but just couldn’t see being comfortable with how much bigger they felt. I pretty much agree with every point you made about the Cup. One question, would you still pick this bike if you didn’t have the Thruxton or did you change your mind after testing the Street Scrambler? Keep up the great work and TBH!!

I am completely with you on this. I loved the Street cup since the year it was released, and always loved the Bonneville series. I got my Yellow Street cup last month and have put about 200 miles in it. I do like the Thruxton as well, but for the same reason like you mentioned, I did not opt for it. I am very satisfied with the handling and power of my first motorcycle, the 2017 Triumph Street cup yellow. I love it. I noticed that when riding 60mph speed, due to side winds, it has a small shake... am taking it to the dealer next week to check it out.
i cant decide between this, a street twin, or a bonneville... just sold my 2015 street triple bc i was eventually gonna kill myself on it speeding around like a maniac... any thoughts guys?
The cup is better than the street, but I prefer the scrambler! Much easier to ride and more practical really... The main considerations with the bonneville is that you are going up in engine size with the increases in fuel consumption, insurance and cost.... But very good really... The T120 is excellent and comfortable...
On any of these bikes you might find yourself going quickly anyway but the lower revs do keep you a little more sensible...
If I didn't have my Thruxton, I'd either have the new speedmaster or for a smaller engine, the Street Scrambler...

yes i think what ill do is send the dealership where i purchased my 2015 street triple an email and see if they have a street twin i could have a spin on. Something deep down inside tells me that ill be a bit underwhelmed and ill end up putting the money i got for the street triple down on a 2018 model LOL i hear the new 765 engine is even better if thats possible...

In the day of this style 650's were big bikes!
I know, I just get used to riding bigger bikes after riding the Tigers and Explorers and the even larger cruisers! Look at the 765cc Street Triple. MUCH faster...
Brilliant Capt been waiting ages for a review on this beauty! Think they should have called it a Street Racer or Street Spitfire or something. Cup sounds a bit well odd. Does it go daaager daaaaager da? Ha ha. It really is a gorgeous bike, I'm going to have to test ride it soon. I see Free Spirits are already selling a brembo 4 pot caliper front brake kit should it be lacking for some riders. TBH and thanks for the review again

Is there anyway you can put it against the thruxton in the sense of ride ability around town. I am deciding between this and the thruxton
Another excellent production from the Cap'n. In fact, I was so inspired that I went on the Triumph site and 'configurated' meself a Street Cup the way that I would want it. I got up to £11,500 before I bailed out. I think the starting price may be a tad too high for what it is. It would make a great Sunday bike, but I do occasionally ride long distances. I don't think me old bones would be up to more than 100 miles, tops, on a Street Cup. I love the looks, the sound, the IDEA of it - but!!. Does anybody else think that the name is a bit, er, lame?Anyway, much thanks to CR for his excellent filmographic reviews. Keep em' coming sir! TBH.
Thank you sir! :-) Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, you can go to town in the accessories but you don't need to make the same mistake that I always do and buy everything at once... It takes time to how you really want it because until you ride it and see it in the flesh, you can't truly be sure! :-)
Yes, Street Cup, can be misinterpreted, but it means a competition cup really.. It's all about the racing pedigree and pretence..

TALLY BALLY HO Captain! I don't know if you'll see this comment, but i have a few questions since i am considering getting this motorcycle as a daily commute bike. First question, do you know if the fairing that fits on the thruxton 900 or 1200 would fit on this one? Second question do you know if its true that they are discontinuing this model? Thank you for the video and for your time.
I don't believe that it's been discontinued but I will investigate this for you...
The street Cup comes with it's own fly screen but don't think that the fairing on the Thruxton 1200 will fit as it will be too wide....

I've got the 2018 black and silver one, my first triumph, love it, I chose it because of the colour, I didn't like the colours of the street twins. although it could do with another gear. changed to higher handle bars, I swap the seat over to a bench seat for when the misses wont's to come out for a ride.
"Nothing has hurt my testicles or lower back" should be put in the brochure for prospective buyers. Great comprehensive review pal, even if not my style of bike looks and sounds good. I made it all the way to the end. TBH!!!

These new baby Trumpets are great aren't they...not too keen on the look of those "clip ons" though, look a bit naff....wonder why they couldn't have had actual clip-ons...good work as ever sir! Keep 'em coming....
Clip ons would have made this bike even smaller. Fine if you are less than 5'10 maybe... Not sure.. These are Ace Bars which were on original cafe racers anyway, hence the name, so they've gone for a bit of comfort but also a bit of tradition at the same time. I think it's a nice match but it won't be for everyone... :-)

Thanks for the content from the both of you! You can find this bike in the used market now for a real steal. I am 6’4” so I find it really difficult to fit on anything properly but wondering with the extra ground clearance on this from the ST combined with a British customs bench seat and a bar swap if it will be a secret ST that’s better looking and more suited for taller riders 🤔 might just give it a go to find out. Always look forward to videos from you two. TBH TMF!
I prefer the thruxton 2014, is it a big différence between this 2 models ?
Very much so. As I said, it's at least twice as good. But the older Thruxton is good for tinkering with as there are plenty of engine remaps out there for the older engine, but it won't be a quick or light or easy to ride...
You could save a bit of money by buying the older one but you'd just spend more money trying to get it to be as good as the street cup...
Also, the street cup is of much better quality.

Would you change the handle bars? At 1st glance I didn't like the look as much as the ones on the old thruxton but you did say they were comfortable.
They are very comfortable and they are the old Ace Bars that are a nod to old cafe racers anyway.... Clip ons would be lighter but as it is a smaller bike anyway, clip ons might make it too low and uncomfortable. Something for an owner to try I reckon! :-)

How would you say it stacks to the old Thruxton when taking into account the second hand market? The old 900s are about £2-3k cheaper for newer riders looking to get into the cafe racer style but I suspect you'll be forking out a bit in the constant battle with corrosion that the old 900s seem to be in.
I do mention that at the end, but you are forgiven if you never made it that far! ;-)
It really is at least twice as good as the old 900 Thruxtons, so if you can afford it, it's really worth saving for the Street Cup... :-)

Awesome review. Really love this bike but have a couple of nagging reservations. Do you think the price jump over the Street Twin is justified considering the Cup is basically then inline worth the T100? Also, at 6' I'm worried I would be a bit cramped with the placement of the foot pegs.
Well I am 6'1 and I was ok... Yes, the Street Twin has more comfortable pegs, but my knees felt too high up on that bike. The street twin would be more comfortable for longer rides but I mean more than about 4 hours long...
I think that the price is justified due to the different stance of the bike and that you can't modify the street twin yourself to look like this due to frame changes.
But price is so subjective... It's only worth it if you can afford it! :-)

Hello! If you don't mind, what the name of the triumph jacket you are wearing? Quite like it.
It's the Raven jacket. When new, it's almost black but then fades to this browny grey colour...

We have only just had these released here in the colonies and yours is the first test that i have seen on it ,i would call it the naughty sister of the street cup i always did like the naughty ones .The cylinder head would work as you say just better you should slap the bounder who said it doesnt work unfortunately i cannot ride with my weight on my wrists as would be the case with these bars but it is a good looking baby thruxton .
It is indeed! Very nimble and if you didn't want the power or costs of the bigger Thruxton, then this is a perfect compromise.

Really been enjoying watching your reviews and also really like the looks of the new triumphs. The thing is though I have a cb500x and I'm worried they won't give me the grin factor I'm after . I want a bit more go than I get from my Honda ,so my question is do you think the t100 or the cup will do it for me or will it be more of a side step than a step up .
They should definitely give you more of a grin factor, but it would be down to budget... The Scrambler feels more fun, but the T120 would definitely give you the oomph you want but it quite a displacement hike!

It IS much better than the outgoing Thruxton unless you plan to do a lot of customisation as the old Thruxton engine has a lot of engine maps out there to choose from..

I agree wholeheartedly with one of the comments that the front mudguard is style over function. Far too short. On your demo which had only done a few miles the crud from the road was already evident. This will quickly turn into blocked and/or damaged fins. Do designers not realise it occasionally rains in the U.K.
I am humming and hawing between the Cup (naff name) and the T100. Any suggestions for a returning biker? Last bike was Norton Commando 750.

Captain, what's that around you're waist it looks awesome is a tool pouch?
It's the Kriega R3 bag. very useful and fully waterproof, hard wearing and with a 10 year guarantee.
Informative review with a great intro. Thank you Captain. BTW, is there any information as to why the Cup weighs 2 KG more than the Twin?
Thank you. I'm not sure as to why it weighs more. I can only assume its either the longer Ace bars (that are bent inwards) or the extras like the seat cowl as well? Otherwise it's pretty much the same bike... Maybe because the rear shocks are longer, they add a bit of weight. That makes sense to me!

This question has bugged me for 6 years. Now a Cup owner I decided to put all the extras over the Twin on the bathroom scales. First the rev counter followed by the fly screen, then the two heel guards and finally the seat cowl. Hey presto! 3kg.

Great Review I was weighing this up against the outgoing Thruxton 900 but you've swayed me on that one. How do you compare it with the new Thruxton 1200 standard?
Hmm... If you can afford the actual Thruxton then I'd get that purely for the extra performance. But if you are smaller, a lady or don't want to spend too much, then the Street Cup is excellent.

Have you ever come across anyone who has had their petrol stolen?
alan robinson nope! That why I don’t have a locking filler anymore but it’s nice when you have one that doesn’t look like one... as prices increase though, it may happen? I did have some friends have their petrol stolen from their cars in the fuel crisis in 2000? I think it was then... but no, not particularly necessary unless you’re worried your significant other is going to put sugar in the tank to stop you riding all the time!

@Captain Rambunctious luckily new dealers are sprouting up and I'm lucky enough to have one near me in Bristol. I have ordered one after a one hour test ride on both and went for the interceptor.

Better than a Street Triple as a first bike?
I'd say that the street triple would be a better first bike as it would be more comfortable, but there's not much in it. Go with what you prefer the look and riding position... Hope this helps.

Nice one captain, really like this bike.........biggest problem is that it is not a Thruxton!! Will always feel like it could be better, that said I will go and give it a test ride.....have to try and get a ride together soon
Yes, that is a very good point. But if you compared it to the larger Thruxton, then it's no contest. But for a younger rider for cheaper insurance, easier riding and maybe even as a first big bike, the Street Cup would be a better bet.... That's what all these smaller bikes are about. And if I was mainly city riding, I'd choose the street cup over the Thruxton for ease! :-)
I'd rather ride this than my Thruxton R if I lived in London mainly due tot he lighter clutch and better turning circle, but I would never swap it for my Thruxton R for where I live now... :-) Hope that makes sense... :-)

Certainly is a unique intro 🛬- In a past life I worked as a development engineer at Marconi Avionics, Rochester, on flight computers, at that time Radio Altimeters were notoriously unreliable (plus and minus loads of feet!), only the foolhardy would rely on them for landing 🙃mind you that was in the mid 60's hopefully they've improved in the last 50 years 👴

Nothing wrong with a bit of length I have been told very often in many and diverse settings so Cecil B de Mille turn over but I hope the Street Cup has as much longevity in the mileage as you do olde chap but one should never be afraid to express one's views to the penultimate degree in the hope that this might send the arrow just that teensy bit further towards the meaningful target. A small point in that there is no worthwhile adjustment in the handlebars. They do everything they are supposed to do but after riding a Norton I cannot get over the feeling while test riding these that they feel a bit like a toy. A lot of fun though and without the foibles that might cause the intransigence of a grin or two..
Yes, after riding a Norton, this would feel like a toy. But the Norton is a lot more money, a bigger and heavier machine, with fewer modern touches and a much much older engine design so probably less reliable but definitely less efficient and more expensive to maintain.
There is no question that a Norton would be more a more original cafe racer than even the Thruxtons, but that is also the problem. If you want less comfort and more expense but remain true to the older platform, then the Norton is the best, but as a riding machine that looks great and goes well and is efficient to run, then you can't really beat the modern Triumphs at the moment...
I see what you mean about the handlebar adjustment too, I was just getting carried away with trying to talk about everything. Some things still found themselves on the cutting room floor as it is, and maybe this one another thing that should have done as well...

In my opinion, this is the modern, true Thruxton 900 evolved. They should have named it the Thruxton 900 and NOT the Street Cup!! This bike is EXACTLY what the next generation Thruxton 900 would have evolved into. The Street Cup is what the Original Thruxton would be if the engine displacement never changed. Triumph really messed up on this one marketing wise!!!!! The "Cup" is a Bike I want to have around town to do smaller rides.... I Misspoke... NOT smaller rides but, closer to home and sportier rides in town. Very hard to explain.... Rides , perhaps not warranted on my Truxton R and especially My Rocket 3 Roadster to get groceries..... and zip around town having fun in congested places on summer nights here...

Very true, but so many people don't seem to like them according to the comments i've been getting... I like to call them bendy bars personally... :-)

Unlike your good self that's had the pleasure, I've only sat on the little beastie. I grew up with people 'upgrading' to ace bars so to me it ties in with the look and IMHO suits it very well. What I don't like is the open end of the tubes at the clock end. Looks cheap and unfinished.

The warning stickers all over the thing are annoying - do really think that people are that stupid that they need reminding to put a helmet on, read the manual , check the oil and fuel and light before riding. Do you take them off in UK or does it void the warranty? I would be leaving the bigger indicators on - indicators can never be too big and the fork reflectors do help you by making the bike noticeable when turning out of side streets in the dark time - so again I would be leaving them on. A nice bike - looks the goods - spoked wheels would finnish it off nicely.
Nearly Retired yes they are! But due to the American culture of litigation, and EU legislation, the stickers are now warranted as some idiots will try and sue...
I completely agree, but it's just an unfortunate sign of the times...
Nearly Retired the spoked wheels are on the T100 but yes, I agree with you. I think that the fork reflectors are ugly and pretty useless in my opinion, like the stickers but I'm sure they have their place with some people!

hawkrider88 ah that’s ok. We do put smaller ones on but we try not to get caught... mine is 7”x5”. It’s quite a bit smaller and looks better but I wouldn’t want to get smaller. Definitely risk getting told off by the police...

Cracking review as usual buddy, one can only assume that you do really like it as you donated 41 minutes to the review, lol, I agree with you the fake air filters need to be black, it's one of those few bikes that I wouldn't mind even if they didn't do a tail tidy as what's there doesn't look to much out of place, RSM8.
Yes, the rear mudguard does look very streamlined, and so no really necessary, but I would want to bring the lights and numberplate up and back regardless, even if I keep the 'fender'... :-)
My reviews are becoming far too long but I'm trying to get all the info in there... You can get basic stuff from the professional reviews from BikeWorld and MCN etc, so I try to build on that... Still get complaints though! ;-)
Longest one so far. I try to stay below 30 mins if I can. Will see what happened on the Bobber and Scrambler... :-)

I'd sooner watch your review bro, at least I know it's honest, with some reviews you know they're just trying to sell them, I know it's a taste thing, but I think your taste in Triumph is very much inline with the rest of us today, besides if you think something is poor quality at least you'd tell us, chances are I'm never going to be able to have a New Triumph anyway but in years to come maybe a used one, and i'll be able to look back on these reviews and find out what people actually thought, lol, keep up the good work bud & RS.

The ONLY thing I am disappointed in is the corrosion of the engine cases when they come into contact with salt... Instantaneous and ugly and not covered by warranty... £250 to replace out of my own pocket if I want to, on a £12000 bike... Pretty annoyed about it but there you go, everything else is great, therefore if you get the opportunity ever, then get one with black engine cases... :-)

Another great review, thanks! Still hesitating about my choice. Living in central Paris, I don't have the joys of those empty country lanes. I'm going to test the Street Cup, the Ducati Café Racer and the R-Nine-t. What's your take on all that, especially for a good deal of city riding and hopefully some weekend jaunts.
Tony Dare if you like the look then Street cup. I can't say for the Ducati or BMW but the Ducati looks plasticky to me and I've never liked the sticking out cylinder heads of the Boxer BMW engine.
The Triumph Scrambler would be my choice for cool urban riding. Loved it. Check my latest video, it's that. Found it a lot more simple to ride in and out of traffic and definitely had the fun factor!

Entertaining videos if somewhat loud at times #stopshoutingyouwanker 😜 especially after watching several videos! However, production values are increasing and content is always detailed and the only criticism I have is feedback on corner handling and more importantly pillion provision/comfort and effects on handling. For me this is important as I like the Street Cup but not sure about the seat for my pillion, in which case the T100 may be better, whereas some have suggested that if carrying a pillion regularly then the T120 may be better (or Thruxton)? Opinion?
Gavin Thomas the corner handling was excellent. Light yet stable.
As for the pillion, I didn't take one and so I can't answer for that. But the difference with this over the Thruxton is that the seat cowl removes and there is a flat surface for a pillion, whereas the Thruxton does not have a seat unless you buy the dual seat.
The T120 would have more power and more room for a pillion and the T100 has a larger seat area for a pillion over the street cup as well.
Maybe people who already own these bikes and may have carrried a pillion will see this question and answer as well.
The other option is to look up the street cup on the triumphrat forum website and ask there... should be plenty of people there happy to help...

Hiya Captain! Well after watching your and others' reviews on the Street Cup I went and pulled the trigger yesterday. It was a horrendously difficult choice between it and the Moto Guzzi V7 Special, as they're so different. I still lust after the V7, for sure, but I decided that, as a pretty new and inexperienced rider, the less attention I have to pay to the idiosyncrasies of the bike, the more I can pay attention to where it should be: the road. I found the V7 wonderful, super light, torquey and oh-so-sexy and unique. But wow, you really have to pay attention to gears, etc. So the Cup won out. Superb bike!! A friend accompanied me all the way through the Sacramento River Delta on his XSR900, all the way back to the north SF Bay Area. Needless to say, I arrived home with a grin on my face! I'll let you know how it all goes once I get more used to it - and this rain quits. Ugh. Anyway, thanks so much to you and to @themissendenflyer and to @phil480 for all the great info! Yeah, but I wouldn't count on those "retro" tires being terribly effective. Given the low power output and limited lean angle, may not matter so much. I know I'm glad I can get Pirelli GTs for my Thruxton. Wouldn't trust those retro buns on it.

I didn't feel the tyres were an issue when I rode the street cup but then again I wasn't really pushing it...

That short wheel base, gives it really good lines. Plus nimble. But it's not over the top in tbe power department. It's enough to enjoy, but not get you into super trouble. I'm sucker for cafe racers new and old. Bravo Triumph
