The History of Dyker Heights Christmas lights:
In the late 1800’s Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, NY was created as a speculative luxury housing development by Walter L. Johnson, founder and one of the neighborhood developers. Mr. Johnson named his new community Dyker Heights, since his family’s land overlooked Dyker Meadow, better known today as The Dyker Beach Park and Golf Course. He started by dividing out sections of his own land, building houses, and then developing an attractive suburban community.
There are a few versions of how the tradition got started, local historians say it dates all the way back to the 1940’s. One of the well-known pioneers is Lucy Spata, with her famed house on 84th street where just about every inch of the property is decorated. The Spata’s have been decorating for more than 40 years and add a little more each year. In addition to keeping the family tradition going strong and putting smiles on thousands of kids’ faces from around the world, the Spata’s use this fame to give back to the community through charities.
On the same block, the Polizzotto’s decorate their home with larger than life displays including a 15-foot-tall Santa Claus, and even taller nutcrackers. The Polizzotto family are also known as one of the pioneers of the Christmas lights tradition.
These are just two of the most celebrated homes; there are more than a hundred homes in the area with breathtaking decorations and inspiring stories. Their inspiration, passion and dedication may have paved the way for this world-famous annual holiday tradition.
How to Get to the Dykers Height Christmas Lights?
The quickest option to the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights is usually always the subway. There are two main subway stops we recommend taking to get to the Dyker Heights holiday lights, 86th Street Station (R train) or 79 Street Station (D train). Both of these options will require a 10-15 minute walk.
Another option for getting to the Dyker Heights holiday lights is driving if you have your own car. If you’re not used to driving in the city, expect traffic and delays. The only downside to driving your own car is that it’s very difficult to find parking and almost impossible to drive up and down the streets where all the Dyker Heights Christmas lights are as people are in the streets oohing and ahhing at the lights.
