Can you explain what is causing the unchecked algae growth in this ecosystem? Should something be eating it that’s not there? Is there fertilizer runoff causing it to grow faster than normal?
Thanks for the question! It's not fertilizer here so much as sewage infiltration, and increasing impervious surface, as well as waste from cruise ships. We do have herbivores, but the urchin die off a few years back did not help the situation. We do have increasing diadema populations from what I can see. There are a lot of human induced factors at play.

The short answer: water pollution, overdevelopment, and climate change, among other factors
