This whole setup looks like a really modern version of XFCE, with the Dock, Bar at the top and the Window Manager being Hyprland and it using Wayland. Major Props to everyone involved!
The video is super well made as usual, but personally I dont see why anyone would want a dock while using a tiling wm. The point kinda is to not use the mouse with a tiling WM, so you launch the most used apps with keybinds or the less used once with something like rofi.
I agree to use a keyboard rather than a mouse, but choice never hurts. If we can attract more people to try to start using linux+Hyprland, then why not?
I knew about the dotfiles and the script for quite some time now but I just found out that you have a youtube channel which helped me a lot since I use nobara linux I need to configure some settings manually thanks a lot :)
interesting Stefan but for me it's counterproductive... either I get used to working on the keyboard and in this case I just use shortcuts, or I work with my mouse and in this case I prefer an XFCE or other Gnome or KDE, but who knows, it's always good to see new processes ;) Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I love hyprland and I've been using exclusively tiling wm or DEs like Cosmic for the last 4 years. Sometimes I'm just not using the keyboard, maybe because I'm eating pizza and watching youtube videos. Or because Im using some GUI app which demands mouse. I think having both options (control the WM with the keyboard and the mouse) is great, I don't see a tiling WM and a dock or hot corners are not compatible
yeah, and many(top commenters) HATE dock on tiling wm for no reason and yes i am one of you giys who likes to use mpuse only when i am irl multitasking(eat while watcj TH-cam for example like you say) and not just in desktop multitasking
Thank you. The installer will not work but you can try to use the dotfiles directly. github.com/mylinuxforwork/dotfiles/wiki/Using-ML4W-Dotfiles-on-other-distributions
hello big fat here i have two questions. first when i try to change the wallpaper its just a blank dark gray wallpaper even though i choose the one you have on the video also it was working just fine yesterday and its still working for the lock screen. second how do i add my own wallpaper?
More toys! Nwg look has been styling helper for a few months for my hyprland DE. Dock may be fun to play with, but it does not fit in my keyboard centric hyprland world. Nice toy though.
@@mylinuxforwork Have you tried running vivaldi under hyprland on a laptop with hybrid graphics? It works only fine with --disable-gpu flag on, which is not ideal.
That is a good question. Pretty sure this can be done with a script. I am planning to add the dock as an option to 2.9.7 of my dotfiles. Then I will look into it.
hey man i love your videos i was wondering if there's a way to install a keystroke launcher for files and applications on hyprland if you know please make a video on it 🖤✨
At long last! Now all I need is hot-monitor-edges to help me move between workspaces; then I can choose if I want to use the keyboard or mouse, depending on where I happen to be. I think it is important to make a system user friendly to the point where someone else can use my machine as well. Most people are accustomed to using the mouse for navigation. Monkey see, monkey do. With the mouse you can quickly show a child how to navigate. With the keyboard people's eyes quickly glaze over.
Please search for workspace_swipe_fingers on wiki.hyprland.org/Configuring/Variables/ You can add custom configuration to .config/hypr/conf/custom.conf or create a variation as described here github.com/mylinuxforwork/dotfiles/wiki/Configuration-Variations
I have an old TV that only supports a 1920x1080i interlaced resolution and doesn’t work with 1080p. How can I make Hyprland accept this resolution and add an extra screen to my setup? If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Cool, is it possible to set the dock to window dodge? What I mean is that It stays visible on the desktop but when a window opens it disappears and you have to move the mouse down to reveal it
Awesome dock, thank you for sharing this. Any tips on directing to start on a particular monitor? I have gotten the exec-once command working but it starts it on my far right monitor instead of middle monitor. I love dock, as an avid mac user and hyprland, it gives me some common ground when working on a Mac all day when I get home. I jsust have my 3 most used apps on it. I tried something like this, but didnt work: exec-once=[workspace 3 silent] nwg-dock-hyprland -i 32 -w 5 -mb 10 -ml 10 -x -c "rofi -show drun" -lp start exec-once=[workspace 1 silent] alacritty exec-once=[workspace 2 silent] google-chrome
Looks really nice, but not for me. I've realised that I'm getting much more efficient with keyboard shortcuts since using your ML4W, I don't need my mouse as much which is perfect for work! Do you have any plans to look at Cosmic? :)
@@mylinuxforwork awesome. I have some problems which I believe are mostly Wayland related to be honest. I have to disable the integrated GPU and use the dedicated one in order for my external monitor to work properly over USB-C. My laptop is already power hungry (230w power supply) but in the current configuration I can only get about 90 minutes out of a full charge. Zoom for Linux requires me to log in and 2FA all the time, running in Wayland it's too slow to use and eventually crashes, so run it under XWayland, Teams for Linux just launches the web site now when I join a meeting (might be a me thing). I also struggled with getting the scaling right on Hyprland but think I'm okay as is. The scroll wheel is another thing, I found it too fast on webpages but just right on terminal, so slowed it down, now websites are good but terminal is way too slow! The bluetooth audio is a little temperamental with my earbuds, and I find the UI for the WiFi oldskool but works well. That said I also really enjoy Hyprland as I get used to it.
If everyone make Linux like Windows for new users they will Definitely go back to Windows after some time i personally used cinimon for 2weeks(biggener friendly) switch back windows because it didn't offer anything different But when i change to hyprland it completely changes my view so i will be using Linux for past 3 months

Linux is all about choices. I do not see the point of talking down a choice just because you don’t need it 😊
some people might want it for the visuals in floating mode
I like that specially with autohide and lots of ppl use mouse and keyboard together bcz lots of gui apps are focused on using mouse
@@utvikler-no i am not talking it down. I was just curious why would one use a tiling window manager if he is using a mouse to start apps 😅
This is exactly what I was doing with KDE desktop. It feels like you were reading my mind.

Nice video, Stefan! Do also check out Piotr's other tools, like nwg-shell, nwg-panel etc. All available for Hyprland as well.

Hello there! I really need a music player on left corner of the waybar where I can change volume, play/stop and next/prev song. It would be great!
Can you share an example screenshot?
Unfortunately I can’t put any links here, but I can say that, in my opinion, it should be minimalistic and have a light/dark theme.
Thank you for this great video, but I have a question, how to make the dock only appears when hovering over its position?
This is a start parameter. Please check the nwg-dock-hyprland wiki.
Can I use this hyprland dotfile in ubuntu and pop os please reply 😢😢, and btw i am new subscriber

Hi Stephan we can get backgrounds padding opacity but white line underneath active window not working still a blue dot

You need to play a bit with the style.css.

Please try again by opening Waypaper. You can also aelect there a different folder if needed. The standard folder is wallpaper.
Is there a way to install ttf-ms-fonts without messing with the waybar icons?
I haven't found a way so far.

While you are at it, add gammastep by default to your dotfiles and the installation scipt and sway-osd.
Just added your suggestion as feature issues on GitHub.

Can you describe a bit more the behavior that you want to see?
is there a way to have it fade away slowly instead of just building a border so it doesnt overlap windows?
Not sure if I have understood you correctly. Can you explain a bit more?
@mylinuxforwork basically like how Mac's task bar fades away instead of being positioned permanently

How does hyprland compare with KDE for gaming and VRR support?
I have no experiences with gaming. But if your setup supports Wayland then it should work as well.

Yes. Should be possible with the autohide function. Please check the nwg-dock-hyprland wiki.
Use -d to auto hide

You can use waypaper to set wallpapers. Themes can be installed with nwg-look.

Same. Hyprland is the reason I fully gave up windows or macOS.
Why would someone need a dock on a window tiling manager
everyone is different, what you like or dislike, might or might be like by others. Thanks for the Video!
Especially new Linux users can benefit from a dock.
Thank you.
Because they keep trying to make it a desktop environment.
i think it makes sense, you can set hyprland up like mac with dock or windows with windows
