Is this really the fanciest boot cream of all time? I tried them on my scuffed up Higgins Mill boots to find out.
    INGREDIENTS
There's no precise ingredients list out there, but it is mink oil based and contains a variety of waxes. It also seems to have a little bit of alcohol in there, but not enough to cause concern for stripping leather.
    PRICE
At $9 an ounce, it's much pricier than its main competitor Venetian Shoe Cream ($3/oz) or the cheapest options, Lexol and Bick. ($1/oz)

    PROS & CONS
    Pros
    *Produces really nice luster
    *Eliminates scuffs
    *Smells better than many competitors
*Works on every nice leather out there
    *Practically solvent free
    *Doesn’t change color very much
    Cons
    *Pricy
*Some criticize it for giving a great shine but not giving great weatherproofing
    *Proprietary ingredient list
*No pigment, so it’s a bit harder to hide scuffs

FYI, (Coconut) fatty alcohol(s) (long chain fatty alcohols) are fatty acids that are naturally derived from fats and oils like tallow, coconut, soybean and palm kernel oils. It is not added to sapphire, but rather naturally present in one or more of the ingredients in their product.
The Ethoxylated Isotridecanol is probably also naturally derived from that same ingredient or the coconut fatty alcohol itself.
    Chemist here btw!

One of your cons is: "*No pigment, so it’s a bit harder to hide scuffs." You may of course buy one of Saphir's Creme 1925, with a range of 26 pigments. It cleans, nourishes, waterproofs, and polishes the shoe/boot. I use the No. 10 Saphir Beaute du Cuir Creme Surfine Cognac Brown on my Anatomic & Co cognac-coloured Tapajos.

Great product. And an interesting msds @ 2:53 that gives us a better idea of what is in Renovateur. By appearance and supported by the msds it is an oil in water emulsion (cream). The ingredients in the msds, in order, are hydrotreated naptha (petroleum solvent) ~ 5%, A surfactant, detergent and most interesting because it is about a third of the product, Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether (Dowanol is one brand name), another solvent.
The other 50 - 60% are presumably mink oil, lanolin, beeswax, carnauba wax and possibly shea butter, jojoba oil and turpentine (as another solvent).

Fatty alcohols are completely different molecules from the drying alcohols you are thinking of like isopropyl or ethanol. Fatty alcohols are long fat molecules with an alcohol group at one end, and are moisturizing/oily/waxy/emollient/emulsifying, not drying or damaging. Fatty alcohols and fatty acids are friendly confused with their inorganic counterparts but have almost nothing to do with them. The solvent used in Saphir products is pure gum turpentine.
Fatty alcohols like stearyl alcohol are typically used in hair conditioners or facial moisturizers or chapstick.

I am not a pro, I barely know what I'm talking about, but as someone who has recently had to restore a ton of work shoes due to the insanely bad winter we had in Colorado this year... I have found a baby hobby in restoring dress shoes now. So with my limited experience in restoring them, which comes with tons of failing and experimenting, Saphir was by far the best conditioning product I used and I think the mink oil has to be the reason for that.

I waited 2 years before actually cleaning my Higgins Mills. I roughed them up preppy bad, There's some spots that turned gray like graphite where the boot rubs against my motorcycle. I finally conditioned them today with Saphir Cream Greasy Leather, but the gray spot is still there. Will this product get rid of it or is it ruined permanently?

    • @Case16710
      @Case16710 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The gray is the blue-gray center of the chrome tanned leather. It shows through when the top grain is worn through. Unfortunately, if you are going to be regularly abrading the same spot on the boot (like when shifting) there isn’t really a way to avoid it. You could use a polish with some pigment in it to cover the spot, but it’ll just wear through again. Also, you’re not really supposed to use wax or polish on Chromexel.

I have several pairs of Allen Edmonds CXL boots and shoes, including this Higgins Mill boot. While the Renovateor is awesome on calf skin shoes, I don’t believe it works well on CXL, and I’ve never heard of anyone recommending it.
I use Saphirs Greasy Leather, either in brown , or if it has contrasting stitching like a boat shoe, which I’ll use the untinted. It works great and you would have much better results. I have several year old boots that look almost brand new and my boat shoes have been soaked thru and look marvelous.
That said, I also have about a dozen calf skin shoes, some have gotten quite heavy use, and the Renovateor , sometime a couple applications, followed with Saphirs cream or polish gives amazing results.

I note that you say that it doesn't waterproof as well as effectively as some other conditioners. However, the Saphir Mink oil conditioner is meant for light frequent use, rather than infrequent heavy coatings. Horses for courses. Also, Saphir does warn on its website that it may darken certain types of leather, notably nappa.

The % information on the sheet of composition should read as follows (for Isotridecanol): more than 1%, but less than 2,5% (of the total.) Or simply in other words, somewhere between 1% and 2,5% of the total. The reason is perhaps cryptic, in order to keep the exact amount secret, changeable or so...yet to demonstrate that they're present "below the minimum danger threshold."

I suspect the advice for disposal is likely to do with the tiny amount of paraffin, which is extreme cases could lead to a fire risk, rather than the product being toxic.
Remember that EU regulations are very tight, and even the slightest risk is still seen as a risk when it comes to disposing of containers.

It's gonna be darker immediately after applying. Wait a day to get a true gauge of how much it darkened your boot. I conditioned a pair of boots this weekend with mink oil. Could only do one last night. Did the other today. The one from last night was significantly higher than the one I just finished this evening.
Like your vids a lot. I know you did the disclaimer "not to crucify" you, but you really need to soap then up first before you condition.

Like you said Saphir is made for the best shoes you own, not for a chromexcel boot. Being that this is a Higgins Mill from Allen Edmonds, I’m sure it will work great but this product is not made for boots. On your best leathers, it is simply amazing!

My technique is to clean boots with Otter Wax Saddle Soap, then immediately put their salve on. leave salve on for a day, buff clean, then immediately put this Saphir Renovateur (m'oir) on, leave for a day, then buff clean. Probably overkill, but I find conditioning boots to be fun!

I compared this product to Dr. Wack - A1 Lederpflege (Leather Care). And I must say, well... The Dr. Wack product contains no mink oil but jojoba oil and it is silicon and alcohol free - plus it doesn´t smell like a cookie. It is a german product I use for decades now. It is widely used by car restorators for ages and that is how I got to know the product. The effect when restoring leather with this is stunning. Used very sparingly on fat leather shoes produces fatastic result even when they are totally beaten up. It is not cheap either - the bootle is about two third of the price of the saphire but it contains 250ml (8.5oz). Not to be mistaken I have nothing to do with the Dr. Wack company.
