      I didn't know he'd passed away. Both times they played in Dublin, I'd missed them. SOTL I discovered in 2005 on one of those Amazon 'you like this, you might like this' catches. I listened and I was hooked. Listened to the samples and went straight in and got Ballasted Orchestra and Avec Laudanum. Brought them on a family holiday, during a great summer and on our first night there, I discovered we had a back path straight to the beach. Headphones on and I listened to Sun Drugs. The sun was setting, but never seemed to set because my beautiful wife was beside me - wondering why I had headphones on and we walked. I took the headphones off. Love of my life and SOTL will remain the musical love of my life. We headed back. Brian, I hope wherever you are, you know how much we loved your music and I hope you understand why we wish you'd released more. Love you and thanks.

    The setlist (as far as I can tell):
    0:00 - -Dungtitled (in A Major)- CORRECTION: Not sure how I got this impression. If it's Dungtitled it's a very different version of it. The posted setlist calls this "Generous Abandon" which I cannot find anywhere.
    7:56 - I Will Surround You
    15:47 - Requiem For Dying Mothers (new ending: Requiem String Melody starts at 24:30, returns to Part 2 at 29:25)
    35:08 - December Hunting For Vegetarian Fuckface (extended)
    1:00:20 - Mulholland
    All these songs got new endings and I'm stoked that they're still iterating on them. The new Requiem and December Hunting especially blew me out of the water.

    • @himethisisme
      @himethisisme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TheSimzen That's interesting. I am 100% sure 7:56 is I Will Surround You, and Adam even says "this is one we haven't played in a long time" before starting it, so it doesn't make much sense for that to be in the middle of the track... I'm wondering if they just kinda bundled those tracks together under a different name during live performances, Godspeed You Black Emperor-style.

    • @alexlegge
      @alexlegge 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Compositionally, the bass entry is one of the all-time great timbre changes in music history, if you ask me. And it felt several-fold more beautiful in the flesh. This may not be apparent to many people watching this video, but Brian and and his amp were situated a great distance from the rest of the performers, way off stage right and not really underneath the dome at all. Few musicians take this kind of detailed care when optimizing how their sound carries through a venue's space. Imho it showed a deep and heartfelt level of respect not only for those listening, but more importantly, for the music itself. Such a shame that with Brian's death, we're limited to the past tense when speaking about their performances. Yet their music continues to touch so many, and will continue to do so long into the future.

    I've been fortunate to see over 200 performances by various bands since 1985.... I didn't get to see this SOTL performance, but I did get to see them earlier up in Chicago in 2013.... Out of those 200 performances that I've seen, I can count on 1 hand the number of times a performance literally brought me to tears.... SOTL in 2013 was one of them. My absolute fav artist ever.

    • @SKY_DWELLER333
      @SKY_DWELLER333 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, I was at that show up in Chicago as well! I had been living in Chicago for less than a year at the time, and the kranky 20th anniversary celebrations got announced. Snatched up tickets for stars of the lid as soon as I could. What an absolute pinnacle of performance and immersion. It was a pleasure meeting Adam and brian after the performance as well. When I met them, Brian was asking everyone for high-fives as we all lined up to meet him. both he and Adam were gracious enough to sign my copy of the tired sounds. I am of course deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Brian McBride. The guy had such an air of genuine humility about him. They both did, but speaking specifically about Brian, after telling him what an amazing performance it was he just responded with, "you're very kind," and then made some sort of quip about technology failing. They'd had some technical difficulties that evening. A memory, and an experience, I will cherish for as long as I live.

    This was the most memorable concert I've ever attended. Thank you for posting so the lucky few of us can revisit it and others can catch a glimpse. Maybe my memory has faded as organically as their music ebbs and flows, but I recall the focal point of the projections during the climax (minutes 47-48 approximately) being up at the arc of the dome where it felt four-dimensional. I suspect some of the choppy-looking motion in the first half of that minute is attributable to the projections moving with a ferocity beyond the resolution of this footage. That's more of a testament to the absurdly high quality projections. This was a mesmerizing, time-dilating, supermassive performance led by a partnership of sonic wizards.

      Exactly. I don't believe in the archaic, outdated bible stories or fantasy stories of a Jesus figure. But I do believe in the universe and its mysterious beauty. I don't need someone to invent characteristics of this universe, it can remain mysterious. To me this music emphasizes that feeling of a welcoming unknown.

      Right. I spoke with someone who sat next to me and we tried to figure out whether they played Tippy's Demise...at least it sounded like the song from the intro.

    What instrumentation are they using besides the string section? The guy seems to have a guitar/bass, I can't tell what else.

      +postmodernjungle it sounds very much like stretched or edited version of requiem for dying mothers part 1 and then around 22:00 it flows into part 2

    What does he say at December Hunting...? "Anyone heard of "Home"?" and then does he say it's a band? Or what? So to whom is it dedicated?

    • @Ephemeral-Bean
      @Ephemeral-Bean 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Zahorák Attila He is dedicating it to the man he mentioned, HOME is an artist, they are known for their popular track 'Resonance'

      @@Ephemeral-Bean It's much more likely he's referring to Home - an indie rock band that disbanded back in 2010. Adam included a track of theirs in his Electronic Explorations mix from 2017.
