Mr. Wilk is a phenomenal instrument repairman. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable, he takes enormous pride in what he does and he stands behind his work and products. There’s a reason he doesn’t need to advertise his valves as much, they really speak for themselves!

I appreciate your time in reviewing and evaluating these. I purchased a set for my small-valve new to me 2165. I’m excited to test them out as I think that type of tuba is what these valves are made for! Can’t wait.

Easy! Just convince Eastman to install MAWs in every one of their piston instruments from the factory!
I agree that all of the benefits he lists on the site are realized, even if it's a 5% improvement in any particular characteristic (in some cases it's more IMO)
that would raise the price out of competition with other offerings. they should offer it as an option for sure
@@lvtuba okay maybe not ALL of their piston horns, but at least the pro horns! They're in their own price range already anyway. Comfortably below the likes of MW/Miraphone/etc and already a few grand above the any other Chinese-manufactured/US-tested competition. They're kind of in their own realm already :p
Did the intonation characteristics change any with the MAW valves?

Chris, would it be possible to review the miraphone 186 CC copy from mackbrass? The TU-410 if possible!
I’ve owned one and it’s a shit horn, very stuffy and I had issues with the owner. I would save up and invest in something better if you can.
No disrespect meant to @jdplaystuba, but I also own one now and have for about 8 years. Mine plays great. It's very even and true to the original but at a fraction of the cost. I've had no mechanical or structural issues in all this time with regular playing, other than having one solder joint crack between the lead pipe and the upper branch. It was a $40 fix at North Georgia Horn Works, and it's been rock solid. For a hobbyist or non-music major college student, it's a great horn. For a pro or someone looking to be a pro, it's probably better to consider a higher end horn.
@@benjaminunderwood6416 that’s fair I just had a very shitty experience and a bad batch. Me personally I don’t like mackbrass that’s from my experience. If it works for you more power to you.
Martin offered to get me MAW valves for my 836 when I went up to his shop a couple months back for some work, but as a freshman in my undergrad the cost is quite steep. Do you believe, at this moment, that this is a worthwhile investment?
I’m a firm believer in making any investment in equipment that makes your life easier. You’ll have to decide if this falls in that category.

Definitely not as woofy especially in the low register with the MAWs installed. Better resonance, projection and the timbre is noticeably brighter with a fuller sound. I despise a woofy tuba although I recognize it's appropriate in certain applications.
The slurs are also much smoother and buttery. I'd buy a set if I played piston tubas but I'm partial to rotary. Started on a Yahama in HS and played rotary mostly since.

Respectfully, your videos are only ever positive reviews and frequently gloss over any negatives. I agree that these are a fun idea and conceptually probably an improvement. However, there are valid concerns about the structural integrity of the valves with the part missing AND plenty of established pros have used them for a while and gone back to their stock valves after a year or so. In addition, you rave about them and then decide not to use them yourself. Considering the history of only positive reviews, it all really casts a shadow on the reliability of your reviews for making any purchase decision.
1) I’ve said from the beginning of doing reviews that I would only review products/instruments that I personally think are good and I believe in. I don’t think negative reviews help, when the internet is full of those. If I test a product and it’s not good, I don’t waste my time trashing it publicly.
2) I didn’t “rave” about the valves. I merely stated that the claims Martin made about them on his website seemed to be accurate. He sent them with me to try for a few weeks and I did. This was not a long term review by any means. So I have not had or seen any evidence of the negatives that you allege. I’m sending them back to him this week because, as I stated clearly in the video, they won’t work for my very specific situation.
3) Since the very beginning of my channel, I have NEVER received any monetary or material compensation for any of the content that I provide on my channel. My sole purpose has been to provide positive content to the community that has given me so much.
4) The apparent purpose of your comment seems to be maligning a hard working small business owner (Martin), and impugning my character. You’re obviously looking for negative content and interactions on the internet. You won’t get it here. Sorry to disappoint you.
@@cheers623 Thank you for the thoughtful response. I'm not looking for negativity, I'm looking for context. I think the MAW valves are an excellent product which is why this is a video I feel comfortable making this critique of your efforts. My thesis is that the strict avoidance of any critical commentary is the opposite of providing a service to the community. Many young ones rely on your videos for expensive purchasing decisions and they lack your knowledge and experience to place your reviews into a bigger context. A similar issue is prevalent in journalism and car reviews for example. Journalists have become so concerned with appearing biased that they avoid reporting on important aspects of stories with disastrous consequences for all of us.

The educational content I provide has been based on my personal experiences as a student, professional musician, and music educator. I’ve always avoided speaking in absolutes when in that realm. Regarding the Test and Evaluation “T&E” series on my channel, since I’m not claiming to be doing anything other than giving my personal opinion about the items covered in the videos, and I don’t remove contrary opinions (such as yours) from the comments unless they’re abusive or disrespectful, I feel completely comfortable with letting people do their own research and formulate their own opinions regarding potential purchases. My videos are only one part of that process. If I were receiving compensation for the content I provide I’d most certainly be including a disclaimer about this to provide context. Since I do this as a hobby and the overwhelming majority of feedback I get from viewers is that it’s helpful and appreciated, I feel quite comfortable also saying it’s a service to the community. Both of your comments circle back to allege negative motives on my part or “disastrous consequences” for the viewers because I don’t provide enough “context” in your opinion.
Might I suggest that you start your own channel to help provide this perceived need of context for viewers? I’m being serious here. My channel has been and will continue to be focused on opinion, educational, and entertainment content. Yours could be a true journalistic endeavor. It’s an extremely time consuming process to create even the most basic video, hence my slow pace of production. As mentioned in this video, between my professional, educational, and family commitments, I’m extraordinarily busy and it’s only because of the continued requests I get from viewers that I still do these. Perhaps your channel might supplant mine someday with quality content and much needed context. The best I can do is remember to charge my iPad, put it on a music stand, sneak into the chorus room during a service and record my thoughts and lackluster playing examples. I’m sorry this doesn’t meet your expectations or standards, but I wholeheartedly support your future efforts to improve the community. Best of luck.
Would MAW Valves be willing to make custom euphonium valves for my Geneva Cardinal euphonium? Or do they focus on Tubas only?
