I've seen a few other comments regarding Illinois, but a friendly correction (for Illinois): A rifle in a single shot configuration. Straight wall cartridges. If it's a bottle-necked cartridge (30 cal or larger), the case length can't exceed 1.4 inches which is pretty much set up for 300 blackout. You can not use 308 or any other non-straight wall cartridge that the case length exceeds 1.4 inches. Glad to see this podcast topic.
Randy's Hunting Shop in Bad Axe, Michigan is what brought the Ruger American 450 to the market. Indiana had a couple custom builders producing 450s on remingto. 700 actions prior. After Michigan went straightwall, Randy's convinced Ruger to make the American and it blew up. If you want more info on how it went, call Randy himself. Great guy. We all need to thank him.
I am in SE Minnesota which is still a shotgun/muzzleloader only area. The original reasoning for shotguns in this area was because of the low deer density at that time. The DNR wanted to make it harder to harvest deer so the population could increase. Now we still have this regulation (and too many deer) and the DNR wants hunters to harvest as many deer as possible to control CWD but we still can’t use a rifle. The original reason for shotguns had nothing to do with safety.
@@professormadlad7773 I'm also in Ohio (Newark) and the shotgun law never made sense to me. I heard it was because in the flatlands the bullets travel too far but half of Ohio is hills. Why dont they make rifle legal in the hilly counties?
I used to run a Rossi 92 24" barrel in .44 mag in Northern Ontario. 265gr sp, full load of h-110, about 1700fps. Never felt under gunned. Carried light cast bullets loads for small game.
It's a shame that those of us that use the .375 Winchester have to scrounge around for quality bullets since Hornady discontinued the 220 gr InterLock FP #3705. I've seen NOS boxes on gun broker go for over $250. These calibers are just exploding back into popularity, I sure wish Hornady would bring them back.
I found a company, Fury Custom Bullets out of Michigan, that makes a clone of the Hornady 220. They aren't cheap, but at least you have something to shoot, assuming you reload.
Thanks for the tip, I've used them, but they are not the greatest. You either reload .375 Winchester or you don't shoot .375 Winchester. NOS ammo is around $150 for a box of 20 made in the 1980's. There is currently an auction for 136 individual Hornady discontinued the 220 gr InterLock FP and the bids are up to $161. I expect they will go for around $250 to $300. Sierra still has there 200 gr listed on their site, but they have been "sold out for more than 3 years.@@maynardcarmer3148
For years, while hunting in wooded areas, I used a '94 Winchester in .375 Win., using the 220grain Hornady flat point, and got good results. Then, Hornady went and discontinued them, so me, and also .38-55 shooters are out of luck, or have to resort to expensive custom bullet makers, if any are available. In fact, the latest Hornady loading manual doesn't even list data for those two calibers.
I feel ya there. I'm down to my last box and a half of Sierra 200's. The only way I can plink with my 375 win is with cast bullets from Montana precission.
Excellent discussion about the straight wall cartridge. 1. Safety, distance perceived by projectile. Statement made by presenter at Natural Resource Commission meeting. “ Everyone knows Handgun cartridges will only carry 75 to 100 yards” . “However the latest in line muzzle loaders and rifled barreled shotguns will shoot accurately deer size game up to 200 yds. “ I attended those meetings, including the June 2014 meeting where resolution was passed for cartridges allowed in restricted zone. Randy Brown of Randy’s Gun shop in Bad Axe Michigan was aware of the .450 Bushmaster in the newly introduced RUGER American and negotiated for several hundred guns to be shipped to his store. They were immediately distributed to buyers for the new regulations passed. I had already shot deer with .357 Maximum as well as .357 and .44 magnum. While the recoil of a .450 Bushmaster compares to 20 ga with slugs. I hoped for rifles in .357 maximum. 2 . Hunter Retention. With improved loading and bullet design, single shot rifles in .357 Maximum , .357, .44 and .45 begin to appear. Although we had necked up the .223 to .357 in ‘79 , I did not pursue the development. Around the middle 20 teens the .223/ 357 appeared in a few AR’s in Ohio and Michigan. In .2018 Winchester begin development on the .223/ 357 ; later for priority and ease of extraction a thicker blank 9mm cup was used to develop the .357 legend. Excellent feed after understanding 6 o’clock lug on AR design as well as magizine to chamber feed the .350 legend was up and running although Winchester had prototype bolt guns at 2019 Shot Show, it was RUGER who introduced the cartridge in the rack for public use first with an affordable hunting rifle suitable for recoil consciousness and frugal investment for youth hunters. Hornady being on board as well as Winchester, Browning, and other multiple offerings for .350 Legend became available. Thousands of successful hunts later the .350 has a solid following with SS, bolts, AR, and revolvers. With the intro of all copper hollow point bullets that shoot accurately beyond 200 yards with minor recoil, It seems commons sense and affordability will keep it out in front of the coming boutique cartridges like .400 Legend, .350 Buckhammer and NEW .41 GT to be announced at shot 2024. If HENRY, RUGER/ MARLIN, Browning, Savage, or Winchester/ Miroku will produce a lever gun in .357 Maximum or .350 Legend I believe you can sell a few thousand to set the clock in motion to establish the .350 Legend as the all around small to medium size game cartridge like the 30/30 once was. Thanks to Hornady to pen this note. More ammo is expended by effective firearms of lesser recoil that produce the intended outcome. NO CAN NEEDED TO REDUCE RECOIL ONLY NOISE. TRJM. Appreciation to Joyce Hornady for his vision shared and continued expanded legacy through dedicated research and solid relationship building with customers now and future generations.
In northern New England 50 yards is where we sight in. Thick timber in a 44 mag and 45-70 have been putting meat in our freezer for my entire hunting career.
Iowa's use of straight wall rifles is during the shotgun seasons only, muzzleloader seasons are still seperated, and yes we have an early and late muzzleloader season, my straight wall cartridge of choice is the 444 marlin, fueled with Hornady ftx bullets, both factory ammo and home reloads.
Not anymore. Bottlenecks allowed as long as .350 up to.500. Includes 35 Whelen, 358 Winchester, my personal choice 35 Remington. Page 38 Iowa DNR regulations 2023-24.
Michigan has 3 zones. 1 & 2 allow hi-power centerfire rifles. Zone 3 is shotgun, muzzle loader. And now we have the "limited firearm deer" zone. Which allows centerfire straight wall cartridges. I use an AR with a 18" 350 Legend, suppressed.
I think in the Appalachia mountains, the 357,44, and 45-70 are fantastic. It’s hard to see more than a 100 yards unless you are hunting the small breaks created by the power lines or down in the valleys. But even down there, the hills often make seeing more than 150 yards a rarity. I love the new cartridges like the 6.5, but these old straight walled cartridges are better in certain situations.
Why no discussion about 360 Buckhammer? Yes... it's new. Yes... it's from a competitor. Yes... Henry is the only manufacturer cambering for it. I'll wager that Ruger will end up ditching plans for a 336 in 35 Remington for the 360 BH and once that happens, 360 BH will become the de facto straight wall option for lever guns. Regardless and accepting that the podcast is a marketing tool, IMO not even mentioning it has left a dent in the podcast's credibility. This is one of the best podcasts and I've come to expect better.
The 350 and 400 Legend are Winchester offerings, also competition, so it's not like they only mentioned Hornady products. To be fair, the 360 hasn't really caught on. You see ammo here and there but it seems like Henry hasn't been able to keep up with producing the rifles for the ammo. I've seen a few, but you don't see them with the frequency that you see other offerings, like 30-30, 44 mag or 45-70. Also, no one else has jumped on board, even CVA, so that raises some concerns about its viability or longevity. I have nothing against the cartridge, but it's tough for a lot of people to go out and spend quite a bit of money on something that might not make it.
@@scotteger6271 360 buckhammer should have been mentioned in the podcast. Credibility took a chip. 450 bushmaster recoil numbers are higher than a 30-06, and the ballistic numbers are almost the same or better for the 360 BH. 360 BH for a lever gun is a great option for straight wall states. The numbers match the 30-30 lever gun and are better than the 350 legend. 360 BH is a better option than the 450 bushhamster If you build it, they will come.
Thank you for finally mentioning my favorite cartridge, the .375 Winchester!! You also mentioned that you make LeveRevolution ammo for the 38-55. If you make that why not it’s smokeless progeny? Are you at least going to make bullets for those of us that reload? On the same note, are you going to make .41 Magnum “Handgun Hunter” ammo? Can you tell which are my preferred cartridges 😊? I will definitely be buying .41 Mag LeveRevolution ammo. Keep up the great work and content ❤!!!!
I told my father in law about my 450 bushmaster here in Ohio. He swore it'll shoot a mile, isn't sportsman like, will just pass right through because "that's what the military taught him ARs do"... after he just got done telling me every deer hunter he knows just shoots a buck in their backyard under bait with a shotgun.
@@DavidK2007 My dad says the same shit every time I bring up a new high performance round. like 22ARC or 6.5 PRC. "Oh how are you gonna find ammo for that when SHTF? you gotta stick with .223 and .308 cause thats gonna be the easiest to find." Yeah but not EVERY gun needs to be a SHTF rifle.
Correction. Illinois in no way is allowing bottle neck cartridges other than the 300 blackout. YOU CAN NOT USE A .308 rifle to deer hunt with in Illinois,
MD allowed straight wall this year in my restrictive situation this year. I got an AR upper and then was told no AR's so bought a Savage Apex Hunter (lefty). Saw 2 bucks at 50yds and got both with only 30yds before they fell (Hornady Custom 165 FTX). The second was a massive blood lost at point of impact. Just not sure about the 100+ yd ranges. Working on getting the barrel threaded for next year (those subX's). I wish you had subsonic load data for that bullet.
The 308 Winchester is not legal to hunt deer in Illinois. None of the mainstream bottleneck cartridges are legal. 300 Backout and Whisper are the only 30 caliber bottleneck cartridges that are legal.
Came to the comments to say the same thing. I live in Pennsylvania but my best friend that I grew up with now lives in Illinois. I was helping him wade through all of the regulations. Bottle neck cartridges are very limited. Straight walls have a better variety, but are still single shot. He got a CVA cascade and bought one of their single shot cartridge sled “magazines,” had some feeding problems with it so far. I’m not sure why he didn’t just get a CVA scout or a Henry single shot. He went with 350 legend by the way.
If the .300 BLK is legal, it would make sense for them to make 7.62x39 legal as well since they are pretty similar, ballistically. It would open up a lot of options for people as there are some handy boltguns chambered for it.
I have hunted in Indiana and Kentucky with a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington with Hornady lever revolution fantastic cartridge very accurate. I have carried the Marlin 336 and the Thompson Contender both in 35 Remington Hornady Lever Revolution .
Killed my first buck with a 16” Henry lever action @ 130 yards and he dropped in his tracks. People seriously underestimate the 44 magnum from a carbine length barrel. Heart and lung shot in and out.
I’ve hunted with straight wall cartridges for decades. Imo the modern projectiles are what makes the “modern” straight wall cartridges effective along with a muzzle velocity of at least 2100 fps to get some hydrostatic shock for a drop in its tracks effect. I’ve shot a lot of deer with 44 mag, 50 AE, and slow big bullets out of 45-70 with less then stellar performance. ALL have ran after the shot like they weren’t hit unless I hit back bone abs paralyzed them. Same with muzzle loaders up to 1900 fps. I have observed once I get up to 2100 to 2200 fps along with a FTX projectile on thin skinned deer the odds of dropping them in their tracks or close to it. Even a 35 rem(which isn’t a straight wall cartridge) I have observed the same drop deer in their performance when max velocities of 2100 fps are used. At starting loads when your three to four hundred fps less it does not have the instant shock to drop deer off their feet with the exact same shot placement. The 450BM with a FTX is about the only straight wall cartridge I would use for deer because I don’t like tracking them. I’ve seen a lot deer and bear that have drop and don’t move with that chambering and round. .
My experience has been very different from yours. My muzzleloader has always dropped deer within 30yds of point of impact. As for the 350legend, most every deer drops where it was shot. Even my smoothbore 12ga shotgun, with 1600fps at the muzzle, took deer efficiently.
Iowa not a straight wall state anymore, we can use anything from.350 to .500 during shotgun seasons. I used a 35 Remington Marlin lever this year. Used a 44 mag Marlin prior to the change two years ago.
Heck even winchester is only making 1 type and its hardly there. Cant expect them to pick up winchesters slack. But i want them to as well 😉 I think 400 legend has serious potential, but its the weirdest limp rollout ive ever seen. True 8.6 was a tiny rollout as well, but thats because it was backed by small companies with a non typical, non saami approved cartridge. 400 is riding the coat tails of one of the most successful cartridge rollouts in modern history, with big company support... why the flacid trickle?
Hunted during the muzzleloader season in Maine this December, trying to fill my last tag. Two weeks of pounding the woods with a traditional muzzleloader. Last day, I touched her off to unload it on my way back to the truck and it went, POP! Only the percussion cap went off... after waiting for a hang fire, I loaded another cap and with about a half second delay, she went BANG. I'd have been some ugly if I'd have been pointed at a big deer after two weeks of hunting at the end of the season.
I use a 350 Legend in Ohio now. 20 Guage in Ohio.. you were wimp in our group all of us used a 12 guage. Winchesters rifled slugs were my choice. I clocked and grouped every rifled slug for a 12 and for a 20 guage. I dont know where in the heck you hunted in Ohio but in our agricultural area was 100 acre woods, 200 acre farms and thick brush State ground along and islands in the Maumee river. My best choice was 870 pump 12 guage, 21 inch barrel with a rifled choke tube and it was lethal very accurate. The 350 legend I use has been a joy to shoot. A Franchi bolt. I did everything possible to the brass and tuning the rifle to do 2525fps with a 165gr flex tips, moly coated. It will hold an inch group at 200 yards. Also a 12 guage Savage Bolt with SST 2 3/4 inch holds a 3 inch group at 200 yards.. A good friend uses mostly a 38-55 with his own bullets.
Indiana has some odd regulations. Limited in size of the round doesn’t have to be straight wall(public land) meanwhile coyote season is limitless on what you can use.
Minute 21 you touched on how rare it is to find a 450 bushmaster gas gun ( AR). Minutes 31, and 42 you discuss popularity of bolt guns in 450 bushmaster and velocity at 2200 fps. I have spoken with hornady tech support about this cartridge also. Specifically, WHY WILL HORNADY NOT GET SAAMI SPECS FOR THE 450 BUSHMASTER IN A BOLT GUN? AND THEN WHY NOT LOAD AMMO FOR THOSE BOLT GUNS THAT CAN HANDLE HIGHER PRESSURE THAN A GAS GUN? There are other companies loading ammo well above hornady's vanilla specs for years now. I say hornady's vanilla specs because they choose to only run with saami specs for the 450 in a AR platform. Hornady also publishes different saami specs for many other cartridges in gas gun vs bolt gun. I will not post my personal findings. But I know for a fact this cartridge can be pushed harder. I typically am not a max load kind of guy. On the other hand, hornady interlock bullets in 350 and 450 are a outstanding choice. At max ranges they out perform anything on the market at this time. Thankyou for producing those bullets hornady. Love, Peace and Chicken Grease.
Personally I love the Hornady leverevloution 450 marlin 305 grain loads. I shoot them from my 450 marlin bfr that still remains the most brutal recoil in a handgun I have shot. The 500-700 grain 500 mag from my 10 inch bfr before the conversion to 500 bushwacker. Was no where near as bad. I think Hornady should pick up the 500 bushwacker and custom load for irmt that would be awesome. Tii armory did a really good job with the cartige.
DNR says here in Michigan we have roughly 70-75 deer per square mile. Straight wall in lower half of state with 1.8” case length restriction. Hopefully I can soon use 444marlin here
RUGER! Please bring back the No 3 single shot in straight wall rounds for those of us in the Midwest. A 350 or 400 legend? Heck put your own spin on the rifle with a new Ruger round or bring back a classic from the past 375win? In Indiana we can use bottle neck (modern) rifle rounds on private land, so how about a 30-30 or 308win so Illinois hunters that don't want to modify a rifle can use it also. The No 1 is great, but more expensive and to a lot of us the lines of the No 3 are just perfect, beautiful, and classic.
I didn't hear you mention which I will go back and listen to this video again. I didn't hear you mentioned the 45 Long Colt the 454 casull the 460 Smith& Wesson Magnum the 480 Ruger. Those are all straight wall cartridges and you get most of those in a rifle besides of revolver. And of course you got the 500 Smith& Wesson Magnum which you can get that in a rifle
Will Horandy release the 200 grain .400 SSTs currently found in the Hornady 45 Cal. .400" Low Drag Sabot? Love those bullets in the 400 Legend, but hate paying for the sabots!
I would love to see the 45 win mag to come back. And put it in a bolt action or AR platform. It would do 75-90% of what the 450 bushmaster would do without the recoil I love my Lemag m1 carbine in 45 win mag as well as my automag iv’s
what was mentioned in this podcast about Illinois is incorrect. What calibers are legal for rifles in Illinois? Effective Jan. 1, 2023, the legal calibers for single-shot rifles are: a bottleneck centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding one and two-fifths inches, OR a straight-walled centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger. Both must be available as a factory load with the published ballistic tables of the manufacturer showing a capability of at least 500-foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. Full-metal jacket bullets may not be used to harvest deer.
These caliber specifications are the same that hunters may be familiar with for handgun deer hunting in previous years. The barrel of a handgun shall be at least 4 inches.
Why is Hornady 44 magnum brass so short 1.254"? Your load book says the trim length is 1.275". With max length of 1.285". I load high volume cowboy action ammo in several calibers for several people in our club. Your brass doesn't crimp at all if my dies are set up for any other brass. Sorting head stamps in my situation is a real PITA!
I've heard that 350 legend is geometrically flawed in AR 15's even with specially designed 350 legend mags. Is that true or is there something that can be done to improve cycle reliability?
not sure you mentioned that straight wall is also at least a little bit easier to reload. If you have not, ya'll should do one episode dedicated to the 45-70 and the awesome FTX 325 you make for that. That bullet, in that caliber knocks my ar500 off the chains. Literally BREAKS the chain holding the plate. Incredible power, uber fun to shoot. Always a crowd pleaser.
I took my .45-70 to the range the other day. I hang my AR500 plate on a shepherd's hook. I've had that plate for almost a decade and have shot it with thousands of rounds; pistol and rifle up to .308. After a few shots,, I broke the ear off it with the .45-70. Good thing it had two ears! 😂

I am very fond of 45/70 several 1886's and Sharps copies. The Sharps action seems really strong but hard to get information on how strong the Italian Sharps actually are. I do like my 44 Magnum 1892 a very strong action the little brother of the 1886.
I'm in Texas and don't have any restrictions, but I really wish Hornady would throw their weight and marketing behind a hog devastating AR compatible 44 or 45 straightwall that's not a jammamatic like the 450. Bonus if it could use 45-70 dies. Winchester is on the right track, but they have no post development follow through so I'm not interested in the Legends.

You missed the point a bit when Michigan added the straight walled stuff. The length was designed so the 357 mag was the minimum and the 460 sw. Would be the longest. I’ll add our DNR was very much against the new law. Of course they were totally wrong. You mentioned the 350 was looked at when coming up with rules, in reality of course when the new law came in 2010, the 350legend hadn’t even been designed. The 450 was still new and mainly just known by tactical guys.
I just noticed you said get yourself some cheap ammo and go shooting Is there such a thing for strait wall other then pistol calibers. I know I pay 84 bucks for your ammo in 45/70 in ontario Canada
Indiana in NOT a stright wall state we have set parameters for a legal cartridge min diameter .357 of projectiles and a case min of 1.16in to a max of 1.80in
I listen to the straight wall cartridge episode and I'm still at a loss because you guys did not explain why some states demand that you use these cartridges and why they are different then regular rifle ammunition
I can sum up. States that are concerned about population density have never allowed high power rifle cartridges due to fear of over-shooting a target and injuring in a nearby residential area. Most (not all) straight wall cartridges were designed for pistol usage. These calibers use lower pressures, less propellant, and less aerodynamic projectiles. They have much shorter lethal range than a typical high power bottle neck cartridge and in govt minds, safer for the surrounding populations.
Fascinating to hear that you seem to consider Ohio densely populated enough to ban necked cartridges, while very restrictive German gun law doesn't see any reason to ban them in a country with 2.3 times the population density.
I just wish those 100 rounds of Hornaday Subx 45-70 was actually subsonic. My 20" Henry X throws them at 1,175 fps so they're loud. Waste of money for sure.
You are absolutely incorrect. Illinois is a straight wall rifle state in a single shot weapon. bottle neck cartridges have length limitations you absolutely cannot shoot a 308 for deer, single shot rifle or not.
Get to the point guys! Who else thinks these guys should take speaking classes? I always get bored out of my mind listening to their ramblings, waiting for the occasional tidbit of information they let slip. Theres no reason they can't give all the relevant information in 15%- 20% of the amount time they do use!

I'm in the thumb area of MI and absolutely love my Trident Armory built .450 Bushmaster for whitetail deer. It does a number on coyotes also!
Best part of the week!!!
In northern New England 50 yards is where we sight in. Thick timber in a 44 mag and 45-70 have been putting meat in our freezer for my entire hunting career.
I didn’t hear any indicate that Hornady has a 400 legend in the pipeline, do they? I hope so.
Also easier for reloading
360 BH is a better option than the 450 bushhamster
If you build it, they will come.
AR in 5.56 - OMG TOOO Much Powr Gonna detroy the meet!
Ruger ranch rifle in .223 - Ahh perfectly acceptable.
Fudds gonna fudd
@@DavidK2007 My dad says the same shit every time I bring up a new high performance round. like 22ARC or 6.5 PRC. "Oh how are you gonna find ammo for that when SHTF? you gotta stick with .223 and .308 cause thats gonna be the easiest to find."
Yeah but not EVERY gun needs to be a SHTF rifle.
Indiana allows bottle neck cases as long as the case dimensions are met.
There are two wildcats that I know of.
Good morning fellas, thanks for what you do!
Morning!
Bring back the .375 Win & the .405 Win in a Leverevolution flex tip!
Good episode. I'm only accurate to 150 yards with my muzzle loader, so it's a woods rifle.
We got 6 to 8 weeks left here in VA for Turkey and small game depending on species.
Any chance of getting bolt gun load data for the bushmaster and an all copper bullet for the bushmaster to??
Any word on a Hornady 400 Legend "Bone Crusher" Round ?? Maybe a little lighter 185-200gr "INTERBOND" for a Bolt rifle?? Good Program. THANKS
Iowa not a straight wall state anymore, we can use anything from.350 to .500 during shotgun seasons. I used a 35 Remington Marlin lever this year. Used a 44 mag Marlin prior to the change two years ago.
BTW used the 200gr Hornady FTX bullets reloaded to 2200+.
When are you going to make 400 legend, ammo
Heck even winchester is only making 1 type and its hardly there. Cant expect them to pick up winchesters slack.
But i want them to as well 😉
I think 400 legend has serious potential, but its the weirdest limp rollout ive ever seen.
Please can we have one full podcast on the 22Hornett?....❤❤
Good idea!
could you maybe talk about loading heavy bullets like 69 grain seated to look normal and with a subsonic load 1-7 twist@@hornady
How about some good 375 Winchester loads for those of us who have unfired big bore 94's
🤗 My Favorite Cartridge Is My Little 22, For "Plinking"! Maybe You Can Do A Podcast On My Favorite "Straight Walled" Rifle Cartridge? 🤔
Is the powder in Straight wall cartridge's similar to Muzzleloaders, DO you have to clean your barrel often?
In iowa the only straight wall you can use during muzzleloader is in a handgun.
Lever Action 44mag 357mag and 4570 are just awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to see the 45 win mag to come back.
And put it in a bolt action or AR platform.
It would do 75-90% of what the 450 bushmaster would do without the recoil
I love my Lemag m1 carbine in 45 win mag as well as my automag iv’s
what was mentioned in this podcast about Illinois is incorrect.
What calibers are legal for rifles in Illinois?
Effective Jan. 1, 2023, the legal calibers for single-shot rifles are:
a bottleneck centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding one and two-fifths inches, OR
a straight-walled centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger.
Yes, 300 blackout/ whisper is the only “bottleneck” cartridge that qualifies but the loading you choose has to meet the energy requirement.
Sounds like fun, we all need a big bore thumper in our collection.
@@JunkfoodZombieGuns my 300 prc did that to a 3/8 plate once it’s also knocked my homemade stand over several times.
@@chadperry4021 i put a 180gr Berger VLD THROUGH a Hummer door armor plate at 100yds. Not sure if my hand load was hot or i hit a sweet spot or what. But clean hole through.

I am very fond of 45/70 several 1886's and Sharps copies. The Sharps action seems really strong but hard to get information on how strong the Italian Sharps actually are. I do like my 44 Magnum 1892 a very strong action the little brother of the 1886.
Can you guys start making 450 marlin ammo again? At least the brass so boutique shops and reloaders can load them up.
Not in a straight wall state but I still love my 350 legend. 450BM is still on my list to get eventually
its sure a thumper
@ryancrazy1 I haven't had a chance to hit an animal with it. This season I missed a doe with it because I grossly overestimated the range
Don't bother with the 450bm, your 350 legend will deliver plenty of deer killing energy out to any distance the 450bm can.
@@kevincolonel3070 I still want one
@drakehiltermann9695 I understand.
We need more Affordable suppressor ammo!
Relaoding is the way to go for cheap ammo especially straight wall being so easy to reload
Built a .450 gasser to hunt hogs with from my blind 80 yards away from the bait pile.
I’d like to see the 400 legend make it in the bolt gun world, just to keep it’s Goofy bolt face alive.

😆😆😆😆
PA now allows Straight walls in the special hunting areas around cities. Still can't use a stock AR since AP doesn't allow semi auto rifles (semi auto shotguns are fine) I just throw a kali ckey in my 450BM AR if i want to take it out.
Hornady. You can still celebrate my birthday right now.
Looking at Iowa DNR ‘23-‘24 hunting regs. 9mm carbine meets straight wall, diameter, and muzzle energy requirements. 🤔
you missed the .351 Winchester cartage rifle 20rd mags.
In Iowa, 35 Whelen & 358 Winchester are somehow straight walled.
Iowa now allows bottleneck cartridges as long as they meet 3 requirements. In the verbiage below the key words are "or other centerfire"
1. Expanding type bullet
2. 0.350 to 0.50 bullet diameter
3. 500ft-lbs or more of Muzzle energy
www.iowadnr.gov/portals/idnr/uploads/hunting/huntingregs.pdf
Here is the verbiage
"RIFLES: Rifles firing straight wall ammunition propelling an with a maximum of an inch and of an inch and with a published or calculated for hunting deer during the youth and disabled hunting season and first and second shotgun seasons. The following is a partial list of allowable cartridges that has generated the most questions on legality. Cartridges meeting the criteria defined above are legal whether listed here or not.

.358 Winchester
.375 Winchester
.40 S&W

.45 Long Colt
.45 Raptor
.450 Bushmaster"
No, they opened it up to any bottle neck cartridge.350 up to .500.
@@keithbuesing6912 thank you for the update
I still don't see much popularity in the state for bottlenecked over .35". 350 Legend & 450 Bushmaster certainly are though.
I have a 450 marlin its technically a straight wall but would it technically count since it has a belt
Here In ohio .450 marlin is considered a straight wall, but so is .458 win mag.
You guys seem like you would be fun to hang out with but you need to bring the vortex guys in to do the podcasts
why are you pushing a 355 bullet down a 357 bore which is supposed to be 357 but they are every where very confusing
Because it is not a .357 barrel, it is a .355 bore. This is the Fudd factor Winchester did with the specs.
Hornady, please, please come out with some purpose built 400 legend,
I just noticed you said get yourself some cheap ammo and go shooting
Is there such a thing for strait wall other then pistol calibers. I know I pay 84 bucks for your ammo in 45/70 in ontario Canada
Indiana in NOT a stright wall state we have set parameters for a legal cartridge min diameter .357 of projectiles and a case min of 1.16in to a max of 1.80in
Those parameters are for public hunting ground. You can use .243 on up for private property.
@@mikeh9939 yes I know
I listen to the straight wall cartridge episode and I'm still at a loss because you guys did not explain why some states demand that you use these cartridges and why they are different then regular rifle ammunition
Holy shit!!! It’s Mach Jesus!!!
Your iowa stuff is dead wrong. You can .350 to .50 straight or bottleneck so 35 whelen and. 358 winchester is legal now
Fascinating to hear that you seem to consider Ohio densely populated enough to ban necked cartridges, while very restrictive German gun law doesn't see any reason to ban them in a country with 2.3 times the population density.
Suprised hornady aint made a straight wall 6.5mm with 160gr RN
.458 Winchester Magnum...?
405 win
Maybe they should look into making their straight wall cartridge brass to SAAMI specs.
I just wish those 100 rounds of Hornaday Subx 45-70 was actually subsonic. My 20" Henry X throws them at 1,175 fps so they're loud. Waste of money for sure.
you can now hunt iowa with a 375 h&h 180 gr. at 3200fps thatis going to hurt what iowa has built for deer hunting
You are absolutely incorrect. Illinois is a straight wall rifle state in a single shot weapon. bottle neck cartridges have length limitations you absolutely cannot shoot a 308 for deer, single shot rifle or not.
Indiana is now bottleneck on private. And I don’t believe there has been a single issue
Ruger makes a ar15 450
Get to the point guys! Who else thinks these guys should take speaking classes? I always get bored out of my mind listening to their ramblings, waiting for the occasional tidbit of information they let slip. Theres no reason they can't give all the relevant information in 15%- 20% of the amount time they do use!
Maybe, but this is just a conversational podcast
