You were wondering what "tier" they are in K-Pop, and it's kinda hard to compare them to a western artist. They haven't even been around for a full year yet but are already topping the charts in Korea. Their last track "Next Level" was probably one of, if not the most, popular K-Pop songs of 2021. It was a huge hit globally and they're already massive even though they only debuted November 2020

You should’ve started with their debut song “Black Mamba” followed by “Next Level” then this. They have a whole lore and storyline!!! I suggest you watch “SMCU Ep. 1 Black Mamba” for an explanation in their lore. But I suggest searching for the important words/acronyms in their storyline. Btw, they have their own virtual avatars called “ae”.

Talking about Tier, KPop stans usually categorize them based on "generations", there are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations in KPop and 4th generation are the recent one whose group are debuted on 2019 or Above and that's including aespa (they debuted last year. Among 4th generation group they probably rank as a top Tier 4th generation KPop group and a promising rising star for a whole. For the top Tier KPop group amongst all it still dominated by BTS for a boygroup and BLACKPINK for a girl group (they like the most famous and impactful KPop group globally)

ok some infos because I like to give them and in my free time I like to do researches ♡:
    - the snake in the beginning is the “villain” of the situation, it is called “Black Mamba”, like Pennywise in IT
    - Naevis is the bridge between KWANGYA (their universe) and the Earth, it's like the Turtle, to connect it with IT (if you've read the book you know what I'm referring to)
    - I recommend watching, on or off camera it doesn't matter, SM Culture Universe: Black Mamba ep. 1, explain their lore and vocabulary
    - if you want to better understand who the members of the group are and recognize them, I strongly recommend watching, on camera or off camera does not matter, an updated guide ♡
yes, SM (their label) _loves_ to be experimental and mix as many genres into one song as possible 🤣
other examples of this type, in addition to Savage, are:
    - I Got A Boy by SNSD
    - Red Light by f(x)
    - Zimzalabim by Red Velvet
    - Next Level by Aespa
those that make the high notes are NingNing and Winter.
their agency focuses _a lot_ on vocal performance, they train them to have extraordinary stability both live and in the studio

I believe in the universal language of music. That said, for me the words aren't as important as the way in which they're delivered to my ears.
Also, I really dig the Korean language. Also, many K-pop songs feature a mixture of Korean and English.
All in all, K-pop (girl groups exclusively) has grown on me so much that it has become my favourite genre!

as an avid listener of kpop and someone who grew up with it, i just listen and vibe off of it from whatever concept it is or group. whether it’s a group i’m starting to get into or a group that has a comeback coming up, i base it solely on the music video and song on the first listen. there are times where if english captions are available, im able to read it quick while watching the music video, but i know some people aren’t able to do that or prefer to read the captions later. usually, if i want to know the meaning or go more in depth with it, there’s a lot of channels that upload color coded lyrics with translation and the korean lyrics for people to sing along. however, if i understand the concept, i don’t usually need the captions. it’s up to the listener for whatever works for themselves. i suggest you dive into more kpop and find who you might have an interest to whether it be an older group or younger group and see how you react to them. hope it helps!

Hi guys - welcome to the Kpop world. I will try answer your questions the best way I can:
    - in case you were not aware (since I couldn’t see it on your screen) this MV has the official english translation and you can simply just turn on the caption. If it is “auto generated” do not turn it on because it would not be accurate, otherwise you can enjoy reading the lyrics and understand what the song is about :))
    - yes of course you can, but it is not called “crush” - in kpop world fans have or choose their “biases” i.e. someone they’re drawn to the most for whatever reason (because of their vocal, rap, funny personality, whatever it may be). To be further familiar with the term, many also have “bias wreckers” i.e. other member(s) of the group who they’re also drawn to and sometimes climbing up their favorite #1 spot. This is all in appreciation of the “idols” (they’re not called artists since they bear responsibility as role models beyond just singing into microphones) so having biases is not a relationship-damaging romantic type crush, and many couples I know and youtube reactor couples have biases and bias wreckers.
    - the æ in æspa is pronounced like apple, or entry.
    - the agency they are under, SM Entertainment is one of the many agencies in Korea but most unique since they produced ahead-of-time music that usually general kpop listeners are finding hard follow because it is not in the usual verse1-chorus-verse-2-chorus type of general songs. This song SAVAGE you just reacted to is one of them, having multiple transitions/changes as if it is 5 songs combines into 1. Another of their brother group also under this managing agency called NCT is well known for their trademark “versatility and experimentality” and even to fans who are used to their sound always require multiple/many listens before they can follow the beat, the melody, the direction of the song. For this reason, SM artists/idols are in a league of their own.
    - Having said the above, there is no such thing as “who is the top tier level of Kpop”. Music is art and it is subjective, and popularity doesn’t make one Kpop group the best. Just because kanye reached to be a billion dollar net worth artist, it doesn’t mean he’s better at rapping than Fifty Cent or Snoop Dog. Just the same, just because a particular group has the most number of screaming teenagers or turning up in most news coverages, it doesn’t make their music the best as sometimes these “so and so group donating $ for xyz cause, so and so group are campaining for such and such petitions” are mere publicity. If or when you listen to many more songs, then you will be able to find which music and which group fits you the most regardless of how popular they are.
Taking NCT group as an example: since their debut day, they had always stick up for their trademark versatile & experimental music that’s “uniquely their own” (i.e. incorporating multiple genres into 1 song, mixing unique weird yet addictive sounds, changing regular to irregular beats, etc) and because of it they do not have the “popularity” that so-called more famous kpop groups have, and even receiving a lot of mockery for their sound of music. But their global fan base is always growing slowly and steadily and fast forward to now, their new release STICKER that just came out 3 weeks ago hit #1 chart everywhere and in recent years many started trying to produce the same kind of music. Additionally, they never announce various campaigns they support to gain popularity and they make donations privately, which to me personally, earns my highest respect.
Back to æspa: the SM Entertainment had partnered with Marvel since last year, and just like the MCU where the superheroes are connected to each other, they created SMCU (SM Cultural Universe) where all their artists are connected with each other, and starting with æspa which concept centers in a lore of a world where each person could connect with their digital versions called æ (pronounced like eye) and in the process encountering the villain “black mamba” which attacks and tries to unsync this connection between both worlds. As per other commenters’ suggestion here, the “æspa episode 1: Black Mamba” is worth checking out if you wish, as it is only a few minute mini movie but very highly budgeted, high production, cinematic film that explains the storyline.
I hope the above will help a little bit, with you starting your journey with kpop music and kpop groups, each with their own charisma and style of music which I trust you will find many songs to enjoy. Thank you so much for your reaction to æspa and hope to see more reaction videos in future from your channel.

Most listeners will watch the MV for the first time with the subtitles if provided, sometimes will search up the lyrical meaning first..you can kinda get the vibe of the song from the way they sing and the composition.
Of course you picked a girl group that have their own context and plot, their own universe. All their lyrics are part of a bigger story, kinda like a sci-fi plot, so it's not like they're singing about a loved one or like a broken heart. Aespa's discography is deeper than that.

You can turn on English captions on most TH-cam Kpop music videos since it is so popular with western audiences. A lot of Kpop, A LOT, have english subtitles so you can see what they are saying. Warning don't turn on English subtitles if it says *"Auto generated"* that is a equivalent of trying to use google translate in real time and it will just spit out a bunch of random ish at you so don't turn it on if it says that. You can look online how to turn on TH-cam captions if you don't know how to.
Another thing I like about Kpop is, as you said, they put in WORK for their songs, choreography and mvs. Not only that but they entertain their fans outside of mvs as well with a plethora of content.

Aespa's AIs are called the "AEs" (pronounced like "eye", and their whole thing is about them losing the 'SYNK' or connection between their virtual counterparts because of the corruption of the black mamba virus, thats why in next level the AEs were only glitching and only have a small amount of screentime because during next level is where they are really having a hard time to fully connect with their real world counterpart. But Savage is about the story of them finally facing the black mamba and during the middle of the song they already defeated it with the help of NAEVIs who is the pretty AI in the bridge, because of that the AEs can now fully connect with their counterparts and was even able to participate in the group's whole chorus choreography at one point. My assumption will be is that the next song or comeback they are gonna release is about them resurrecting NAEVIS, because in savage she sacrificed herself to give aespa some support in defeating the black mamba, they basically said in the bridge "I know your sacrifices, My naevis, we love you, I know, we'll make sure to find your memories Let's meet surely after the resurrection" if incase you didnt know NAEVIS is the whole reason why the AES and the girls are connected to begin with, and their next obligation is to bring her back.

This is a rookie group debuted last year with their first single "Black mamba" also after that came "Next level" and now this . And this album also has more amazing songs. There leader is Karina - the one in the beginning with dark purple hair, she is vocalist +rapper. Then there is Winter with short hair and bangs, she is a vocalist she can also rap. Then Giselle who is there main rapper, and last one is NingNing who is vocalist , she is the one with space buns. These girls are really talented and their concept consists of there AI characters as you saw in the video.
Please follow other KPOP groups like
    Black pink
    Twice
    Itzy
    Redvelvet
    Dreamcatcher
    Mamamoo
    Everglow
    Secret number

aespa are monster rookies. Like your talking about record breaking stuff. I can’t even rate them now but there extremely popular, and will be one of the top groups in the Kpop industry. The whole avatar (AE) thing is aespa’s concept, to get a better idea of it I recommend watching a video called ‘aespa Black Mamba SM Culture Universe’. I’ve been a fan of Kpop for almost 6 years now and I usually turn on captions on first so I understand, but you don’t really need them since music is a language itself imo.
