We Hiked The Trails To Pioneer Village & Grist Mill At Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell IN
Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell, Indiana, is a beautiful place, featuring several hiking trails and caves. It's also home to Pioneer Village, a re-creation of life in the 19th century when the water-powered grist mill was in commercial operation. Though the grist mill and water wheel weren't operational when we were there, they are repairing it, and it should be back in service before too long. Even without the water wheel, Pioneer Village was still an interesting place! We went on Sunday, May 1, 2022, which was opening weekend, and we just got lucky by picking that time to go...we had no idea they had just opened back up! There were many houses and buildings to check out, and we were able to visit the leather shop where there was a craftsman there to show his work and explain how things were done back in the day. There is a blacksmith shop, but that wasn't open during the time we came (the sign on the shop said "Out To Lunch"), but there are probably times when you could see a smithy there making something on the anvil. There is a Mercantile Store where you can buy souvenirs, candy, and snacks, and the Village ordinary concession stand where you can normally buy something to eat and drink, but that wasn't open on this day. Since it was opening weekend and local schools/colleges were still in sesssion, we guessed that they didn't have enough staff yet to cover every position. But we enjoyed our visit there, and will go back again another time and see what we missed out on! Thank you very much for watching.
