- We test the new Volkswagen T-Roc R, which feels like it evokes the spirit and value of the old Mk 7 Golf R hot hatch, but in an SUV body.

The Volkswagen T-Roc R is the sportiest version of the 2023 T-Roc small SUV, but it is also the cheapest Volkswagen R product at $59,300 in Australia. That’s a lot less than the Mk 8 Golf R, and actually, the T-Roc R feels more like a Mk 7.5 Golf R, which is great! It uses a 221kW (296 hp) 2.0T petrol four-cylinder EA888 engine and AWD.
Rivals to the Volkswagen T-Roc R include the Hyundai Kona N, Cupra Ateca, BMW X2 M35i, and other sporty, small SUVs.

Why ohh why do car companies continue with heated seats?? 70-75% of Australia don’t need them. Give us cooled seats

Upgrading from an eight year old Polo GTI. Dealer stated that as ours (sorry, my wife's) will be a 2023 build, Cross Traffic Alert and Blind Spot Monitoring will have been removed from the Safety Spec due to the ongoing Computer chip shortages. Not even available as an option to put them back in. That is disappointing. Formentor option is circa 300mm longer, which is a deal breaker for us. (Sorry, my wife)

Why is it none of the Australian car reviewers ever show night footage? Or for that matter, almost every car reviewer around the world. Lighting is such an important aspect of a car and needs to be shown, not just talked about. I know it's extra work but it would be well appreciated.
It’s possible, and I’d like to do it, but one simple reason is that we work for a living (doing this job) and we go home at night to our families.

Could all of the reviews on this channel show under the bonnet and also mention if the car’s engines are east west or north south configuration please. More information on the drive train would be great too such as if there is a traditional centre differential or if not, what the technology used to achieve this functionality.

This is the perfect car coming from a Golf R owner, i would have bought this for sure if it was available earlier however i went for the Audi SQ2 which is basically the same car with Audi badges. We are loving it so i know the T-Roc R will be just as good.
its not the same car, t-roc is q3 more in line with RSQ3
@@Rostic1983 I understand what you are saying however thats incorrect, looking at the components under the car like suspension, engine mounts, and configurations the sizes and parts codes are shared between T-roc, Q2, and so on, the Q3 and RSQ3 are the next size up which shares the bits from the new Tiguan. The bodies all share the new MQB Chassis.

I don't like that you pay for the blue trim but miss out on it on the rear doors.
I've got a MY18 Grid Edition R, which was the bargain performance buy in 2018...nothing else comes close. If VW Australia continues the T-Roc R Grid Edition beyond the MY23 model I'll be buying one in 2025, subject to pricing which has gone berserk. As you get older less noise from the engine and suspension, more room for the driver and a more supple kidney-friendly ride becomes the priorities.
These t-roc are based on the polo and are smaller inside, so there'd be more room in your Golf.
Petrol particulate filter ppf great piece of technology ithese are very unforgiving if you happen to use E10 or 91 just once they foul up the filter and go into limp mode back to the dealer and there's no warranty so you'll be up for several thousands of dollars
I've ordered a Cupra Formentor VZX. It will arrive before Xmas and i think looks and is far more interesting and is more capable than the T-Roc R. They are about the same price too.

Cool. Like the Formentor a lot. At 4450mm it’s probably a bit closer to Tiguan R (4520mm) in concept than T-Roc (4250mm), which is kind of more like the Ateca (4381mm). Still, four good sports SUVs!
Golfs have quicker launch though
@@carmusicvideos2202 - i was going to buy a Golf R Wagon, but is is $8K more than Formentor and there is a 12 month wait as opposed to 3 months for the Cupra.

Can anyone tell me what the “off” on the + shifter paddle does? I have it on my troc aswell
if you're shifting with the paddles, hold the "OFF" paddle and it'll return to automatic mode

Skoda sportline wagon, very similar to golf R engine, just a few kwh down, great car

Be interesting to see what you think of the R compared to the 206. I would imagine passat will be over 70
I wish there were more actual shots of the console instead of a side view of the presenter + some stock photos from the interwebs.
To add to your wish list, I'd like to see things open. Like the deck lid, sun roof, and rear windows. Do the go all the way down? Only Carwow does this.
The interiors of these cars are all starting to look redundant. But at least the front grill has it own distinctive look (albeit still similar), with its lower grill fog lights. It certainly boosts the cars appeal.
I've noticed that you haven't done a review of any MG cars, is there a reason for this? I'd like to see a review of the MG ZST.
MG has declined to provide Chasing Cars with its vehicles for independent testing for a long period. That position now appears to be changing, which is good.
I do not like the Chinese car MG..not reliable..

Negative. That would be the Tiguan R. This is compact. Both the Macan and the Tiguan are closer to mid-size.

Its Cheaper because this is made in Portugal. Tiguan and Golf stay built in Germany. I suspect the T roc R price would be same as Golf R if manufactured in Germany so and well people will go for T roc rather than Golf for the same price.
All Rs are built in Germany which includes the T-Roc R iirc

Would be nice if it allowed 95, but let’s face it - we probably wouldn’t want to put anything less than 98 in a complex engine we actually owned. You want low, low sulphur and high octane.
People that buy these aren't chasing economy or scared at extra spend on 98 .if it's a concern for you you'd better stick with a boring corolla

@@whatthe6532 endless choices really. So many better priced cars without the famously expensive VW options that should be standing at the price. Kia, Peugeot, honda to name a few. In Europe there's even a bigger choice

@@purplehazeffc I beg to differ. Mazda and Kia are completely comparable in terms of integrity of design, and execution of of that design both in terms of manufacturing and reliability. While styling is always subjective, it's universally agreed that Mazda lead VW with this and offer a better package overall. In terms of standard features VW offer a sparse interior with a long and expensive list of options that come in as standard with the other cars and at a better price. Simply doesn't make sense does it. What's more VW's legendary superior quality has come in for a lot of flack on resent models. If VW is going to charge premium price they at least need to deliver on it. Don't get me wrong, VW make great cars but the competition is offering similar if not better at better value.

A car from which you CANNOT clearly see what is in front of you causes a fucking reflection of the dashboard on the windshield.
Headrest too bent forward which does not allow a guide with a straight backrest (as any orthopedist recommends) and which should allow a guide with the spine in the right position and also be involved in what is happening around!
Rejected without excuses 👎👎👎
And let us ask ourselves why, despite these now known problems, it was approved by the foolish employees of the government offices responsible for this work.
Nissan X-Trail seating would have to be the most comfortable (long distance) in class. Pity NISSAN persists with an almost useless 'space-saver' spare tyre !
