Volkswagen T-Roc R review: New small SUV gets the speed treatment! Better than Kona N?

  • The VW T-Roc R is the go-fast compact SUV that you didn’t know you needed.
it takes the familiar recipe from other VW R models - a 2.0-litre turbo charged potent powertrain and all-wheel-drive - and crams all that go-fast goodness into a small SUV body.
That might sound like a strange fit, but the compact SUV segment is one of Australia’s most popular - and also one of its most highly competitive. But, surprisingly, this is only the second performance oriented small crossover with serious speed on its side. The other one is the Hyundai Kona N - but unlike the VW, it isn’t AWD.
in this review, Tom White assesses the new 2023 Volkswagen T-Roc R to find out whether it offers a compelling alternative to the more mainstream Golf R hatchback, considering the T-Roc costs about $6000 less.

The new T Roc cockpit might look more 'dated' - as you say - than the Golf 8, but it is far superior because it still has some physical knobs and buttons on the dashboard. VW made a big mistake by swapping physical controls for touchscreens in their latest models, because touchscreens are distracting and dangerous to use while driving.

'....dangerous to use while driving'. That's really funny. It might interest you to know that you aren't supposed to be using physical or tactile buttons while driving

Correct Bernie, I’m happy to see there are other drivers out there like you or me who pull over their car before touching the volume or A/C buttons 🤦🏼

When you drive this and the Formentor back to back.....you won't be buying this.
I wouldn't call Matrix headlights boring either, you clearly haven't even included a drive at night out of the city in your test.

    Only real rival:
    Kona N
    Huh?
Completely forgets Cupra Ateca that had been on the market 6 months by the time of this video which IS the direct competitor for this car, a grand cheaper, and trades blows for features. I have been through both cars extensively and here are the differences in kit -
T-Roc R has over the Ateca:
automatic reverse left mirror kerb dipping
Matrix LED (arguably the biggest victory here)
Alarm (personally important to me cause with Ateca I had to have aftermarket installed and I hate ripping a new car apart) - and yes I use an OBD port blocker AND a faraday pouch so the Alarm has real value being there.
DAB+ ( I like it a lot for the dance stations but I can get by with carplay - when there's 4G signal LOL).
Ateca has over the T-Roc R:
Full 360 camera vs just reverse camera in T-Roc (I do like a full 360 camera and that kind of negates need to dip left mirror when kerb parking)
Beats Audio 350W standard that sounds pretty good. Also, the overpriced T-Roc Beats Audio option has 6 speakers vs the Ateca's 9, and slightly less power output.
Wireless Phone charging pad - this one's a biggie for me cause it means no cables since carplay is wireless also. Permanent cable free phone usage whilst always charging.
Driver's Knee Airbag, though neither has front centre airbag (Formentor does though).
Both lack traffic sign recognition which is ridiculous at this price point. The joke is the tech is built in to both of them but both SEAT and VW too lazy to update software to work with Aussie signs.
    Everything else is the same:.
    Same adaptive dampers
    Identical engine tune
    Identical transmission
    identical center screen
Identical digital dash other than colours used (I do prefer the blue in T-Roc vs copper in Cupra, but I digress).
Cupra have done some engineering though to make the steering 'feel' more alive than the VW, IMHO, and to me it's just a bit more fun to have a spirited drive with.
The other thing is that the Ateca's rear legroom is *noticeably* superior, so if that matters...... I mean the Ateca really is super comfy for 4 even large sized adults for a long interstate journey. And it has that over the Kona also. Note I said 4 adults and I do mean 4. Forget 5 in comfort. I am 6ft 4 and a 6ft friend can fit behind me in Ateca, which is amazing for such a small car.
They are also both fairly plasticky inside although the edge goes to the Ateca due to the petrol blue leather and inserts, not to mention the Ateca has real buttons for almost everything - almost.
I'd have either of these cars over the Kona N simply because even though neither VW based product looks premium inside (the Audi AQ2 is by far the nicest inside of the small SUV's that use the same engine but it's a little more expensive again), they both look ROLLS ROYCE compared to the shite interior of the Kona N, and yes that includes the flagship edition.
They are also faster because all wheel drive even though similar engine outputs and launch control
200+ KW through front wheels only is just stupid. I said it 10 years ago with Renault and I stand by it today.
If he's talking compact SUVs only, ok it's a bit more expensive but if you're spending that much to begin with, than a JCW Countryman Mini is a legit consideration also.
I don't know why this guy thinks just a Kona N when he's starting with a 69 grand car here with the T-Roc (driveaway price). There's cars around that price + or - 10% that are direct competitors.

Well done with your research. Thanks for mentioning that "...Both lack traffic sign recognition which is ridiculous at this price point...", which is interesting. You are absolutely right. Considering the price and that the VW Group has been in Australia for ages, it is crazy that these models do not yet have traffic sign recognition. Many cheaper cars provide traffic sign recognition, even Haval provides it in their Jolion models.
The Grid Edition of the T-Roc R would be an interesting proposition for about $61,000 drive-away in WA. Probably the quickest new car to 100km/hr up to that price point.

@@nicholasmatthews5989 As said, what makes it worse though is that the tech/cameras are fully built in to both cars and TSR works flawlessly in Europe with the exact same cars. Go figure. It's purely a software issue. The guy at the dealership claimed, get ready for this, that TSR needs its own cell tower service to work. Now I have heard it all - it uses a camera and that's it.

I drove one last weekend on the Gold Coast and thought it was so laggy and slow off the line that it was almost dangerous if trying to get off the mark quickly. Launch control is a great gimmick but does not help when u need instant response on the road. Found it extremely disappointing.

    • @VK-sc6mf
      @VK-sc6mf ปีที่แล้ว +2

maybe it was in wrong driving mode, you should keep gear selector in S if you want responsiveness

I drove one recently too and also found it laggy and slow off the line until I fiddled around and found it was in ECO drive mode. Once in Race mode it was a different kettle of fish.

About 50% of my portfolio profit was from TSLA, BTC, ETH and AMC stock. My financial coach *Ann McGrath Elliott* was able to get me in early on most of these stocks and I exited just at the right time, her analysis was really on point.
