    The cuttings you take and plant, may still be around in 2000 years or more.

    How long does it take for the cutting to root ?

    Does the clipping have to be that small. If I plant in a bigger pot, can I use a bigger clipping?

    • @nexxterra
      @nexxterra ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can, but remember it is still a living plant and it no longer has a root system, so there will be limit on how much "plant" just the stem can support...so dont go too crazy!

      @comment5884 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nexxterra what if you took a 12 inch cutting and had a support stick next to it? How long does it take to establish the root system? What should be the soil temp to plant directly into the soil. I'm in Nebraska

      AFAIK, it may take up to a year for it to grow good roots.

    No rooting hormone needed?

    • @sparcher64
      @sparcher64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IMHO, it can increase the percentage of successfully rooted cuttings, but that's not necessary when you have enough free cuttings :)

      You can take four cuttings at once. Once established, Yews grow up to a foot a year in sunlight (they keep the hedge trimmer companies in business.)

    I have a question. So, I bought a Yew tree for my dorm room at university, and because my roommate lives closer, we have decided to have her take it home during breaks so that it doesn't freeze while I'm traveling with it (My carpool is known for having hour long pit stops, and we live in the Midwest.)
    Anyways, during this break, the tree hasn't been doing too well. It's a young tree (Less than ten CM tall. I'm not sure on the exact age of it, though.). Another friend of mine bought an identical tree. Would it be possible for me to get a cutting off of my friend's tree while it's still so small? I really like my tree, and I would hate for it to turn into compost.
    Thank you in advance!

      Yews are very common shrubs. You should get a cutting from a large bush -- perhaps someone you know has them growing on their family's property.

    • @sparcher64
      @sparcher64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AFAIK, common yews are moderately frost-tolerant (-20 °C / -4 °F),
      but I doubt they'd be doing well indoors.
      And yes, it would be unwise to take cuttings from such a small plant (a cutting itself?).

      she "wounded" it when she pulled it off the branch and stripped the lower leaves. Some plants root fine without rooting hormone. I would also put it under a humidity dome. I have zero experience rooting conifers.
