How I WISH I Tabbed My FAR/AIM

  • The FAR/AIM is the most extensive book you will probably frequently use in your aviation journey. Because of that, you’ll want to be able to quickly reference regulations without having to aimlessly flip through that massive tome.
Thus, I recommend tabbing the book to make your life easier … but be forewarned! I haphazardly tabbed mine during my private pilot training and it came back to bite me in the tuchas!
So how would you tab it? I recommend doing it in an orderly fashion. I have some ideas in this video, but I always also recommend looking up what others did and see if they have any better ideas.

Man I wish they didn't get rid of that front section. 2025 FAR/AIM doesn't have it anymore. Gotta find my old book lol.

If got a glider check ride coming up. Iv tabbed everything that I thought would be useful and may need to be referenced by just flipping through page by page lol. I also added a lot of stick note colors to keep it interesting and spaced them so there are not to many colors in one place. I may have let my artistic side have to much sway in the color coding lol

Spreading colors around is actually a good idea. Definitely easier to tell at a first glance. Good luck on that check ride!

Never been a fan of tabbing or high lighting. I suspect if applicants spent as much time actually studying the applicable regs for private pilot as they do tabbing the book they would develop a working knowledge of BOTH the relevant information and the structure of the CFR in a way that would make give them a practical comprehension. Added benefit being that if you take the time to learn how to study now it will make your life that much easier as you advance through future certifications. Knowledge of the regs is not something to study for a test and then forget it as soon as you pass. It's a fundamental skill that thoughtful pilots possess.

That is a good point. I'm finding that the further along I get in my training, the more important it is to apply the regulations in real scenarios as a way of ensuring the memorization and usage of the knowledge simultaneously.

I don't know, I found tabbing to be yet another way to loot at the book, realizing its structure and how it's organized. Just another way where I also agree with you.
