  • We didn’t have much time to settle into our Airbnb before Typhoon Hagibis came barreling through Tokyo.
Luckily we took it seriously and stocked up on food the night before and were prepared to ride out the typhoon from the safety of our concrete Airbnb unit.
It was an interesting experience that we captured to share with you all. Hopefully you are able to get a sense of what a powerful typhoon can feel like.
We also had a surprise guest, who or what could that be?

We’d recommend the Airbnb unit that we stayed in. It is clean, comfortable and has all the amenities needed. It is also located in a great neighbourhood with lots restaurants and shops very close by, along with 2 train stations 5-10 minutes away by foot. Best part is the host who is helpful and courteous and genuinely wanted to make sure we enjoyed our stay in her unit.

It really was. But much tamer for us than I was expecting. Other areas of Japan didn't do so well, some areas had over a meter of rain!
Later in the series we were going to go visit a place on a day trip from Tokyo but luckily happened upon a tourist office before and ask them about it. They said it was essentially closed because of flooding.
      Thanks for watching!

@@DocumentedTravels I visited Fukushima in 2008 but hadn't been to north Japan since. I was shocked at how much was still destroyed after the tsunami in 2011!

@@DocumentedTravels I was in my city where located on the Japan-sea side in Honshu as usual at that time. As you know the terrain of Japan is long and narrow, and in the Honshu which is the main island of Japan, there are high mountain ranges that exist in a row from north to south, like the spine of fish. All typhoons attack Japan from the Pacific coast side, and when typhoons try to get over these central mountains, they are strongly pushed by the Westerlies flowing over Japan and goes fast toward the northeast direction as the result. Thanks to that, it's rare that typhoons attack cities where in the Japan-sea side. The Hagibis was no exception.

Enjoyed the video... Thanks! Amazed that the electricity stayed on thru that. Even looking out across the city afterwards, lights seemed to be on most everywhere. Tokyo's infrastructure is pretty darned solid. And... You even experiences a little 3.0 tremor to enhance the experience. :)

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, looking back that is amazing. And as you'll see in next week's episode, Tokyo fared very well for this storm. They are well versed in such disasters.
I know, our first earthquake (that we realized) in all our 6 trips there. :)

@@DocumentedTravels - I live in the SF Bay Area... We get an inch or two of rain in a day and all hell breaks loose. Top news story as well. Conversely, a 3.0 earthquake doesn't even get talked about. :-/

It’s all about what you’re prepared for I suppose. Similar to places that get a dusting of snow and everything falls apart. Whereas up here it’s a normal occurrence in winter. :)
