Hitchcock's Definition of Happiness

  • Interviewer:
Mr. Hitchcock, what is your definition of happiness?
    Alfred Hitchcock:
A clear horizon - nothing to worry about on your plate, only things that are creative and not destructive and that's withing yourself. Within me I can’t bear quarreling, I can’t bear feelings between people. I think hatred is wasted energy and it’s all non-productive. I’m very sensitive. A sharp word, said by a person who has a temper, if they’re close to me, hurts me for days. I know we’re only human, we do go in for these various emotions, call them negative emotions but when all these are removed and you can look forward, and the road is clear ahead, and now you’re going to create something. I think that’s as happy as I would ever want to be.”
This is an excerpt from Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's interview 'A Talk with Alfred Hitchcock.' This 1964 interview of Hitchcock was part of the CBC television series Telescope with host-director Fletcher Markle. 'A Talk with Alfred Hitchcock.'

That explains why actors who were directed by Hitchcock said
if anyone began bickering on the set for any reason suddenly
they'd turn around and Hitchcock would be gone. He had zero
tolerance for bad vibes- a great quality for a human to have.

A clear horizon... NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT (on your plate),
only things that are CREATIVE and NOT DESTRUCTIVE…
I can’t bear quarreling, I can’t bear feelings between people (selfish based feelings)
I think HATRED IS WASTED ENERGY, non-productive.
I’m (a) very sensitive (individual) - a sharp word, said by a person, say, who has a (an out of control) temper, if they’re close to me, hurts me for days.
I know we’re only human, we do go in (we come into this planet) for these various emotions, (some) call them negative emotions...
but when they are ALL REMOVED and you can look forward, and the road is clear ahead, and now you are going to create something, that's as happy as I could ever be.
Translation: HAPPINESS WILL ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY THE COMPLETE REMOVAL OF THE FALSE SELF.

This is terrific, it really sums up why Hitchcock and his work is so great. For a guy some people think of as kinda dark and dour, namely with many of his most well known films being thriller and horror, its great to have him talking about what being happy is for him, and its being creative and making masterful films. I feel very much the same.

  • @avidadolares

I think a lot of people, and artists in particular, can find a lot of value and truth in Hitchcock's definition of happiness, even if yours differs. I love his explanation and can easily jump on board with that definition.
BTW, anyone else find themselves wanting to speed up the clip in anticipation of his answer? His slow drawn out speaking style requires some disciplined patience. I keep wanting to finish his sentences for him. lol

'Happiness', as we're considering the notion in this context, is more or less a delusion. It's a temporary, fleeting status at best. The nature of life itself, on all levels, simply does not lend itself to a prolonged state of 'happiness'. There are always endless needs to address, issues to deal with, conflicts to resolve.
'Contentment' is the best people can realistically hope to achieve on an on-going basis. 'Happiness' will only ever come in spurts, like nice weather.
