This is so beautiful, it is heaven. I love this music so much, in one mounth april 2021 I shall be grand dad for the first time, a grand daughter. I'm not 100% sure but I guess it's so that the pianists are not constantly bumping their elbows and rubbing their underarms at each other.

Why does the upper part have to be played with hands crossed?
I don't know for sure but my guess is that it was written this way in order to prevent the pianists from hindering one another. All 4 hands are relatively close during the whole piece and if not crossed the pianists would constantly bump their elbows and rub their underarms at each other.

100 percent in agreement. The Jussen Brothers give the piece more depth and allow it to breathe
