  • In today's video, I give you an update as to how both lawns are looking now that we're getting towards the end of the summer. One space was seeding from scratch and the other one was laid as turf, but both are the same variety.

    The garden is looking the best I've seen it since you started your journey, well done. A lawn that is working for you what's not to like

    This is good to hear, I've just stripped out a bad rye lawn and gone down this route. Only 6 days in, waiting for it to pop 😂❤

      Boss!
      This is always the hard part, going outside every day looking for germination!

    I just got a lot of disease after the rain. I didnt mow for 5 days as it rained when I wanted to mow. I'm verticutting it tomorrow and using the hayter to such up the blade to cut it low. The manual cylinder has slowly been bending the grass down and not cutting it low enough. The hayter cuts it much nicer in terms of a flat finish but leaves horrible discoloration. It's a choice between that or a wash board effect and little bits left on top.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It can be tricky finding the balance. I think I'm going to be using my Hayter on here again as we get further into autumn. Starting to bring up the height of cut up.

      We thought about doing that last year, but we just use the stones around the outside now (we need to move the pots though - wasn't my idea 😅)

    I have a fescue/bent front lawn that doesn’t need much doing apart from a feed and the occasional scarification, my back lawn is 100% rye and it’s a pain in the backside so this week I have taken it back to the soil and over seeded with fescue/bent with a view to making the fescue become the dominant strain. Don’t get me wrong for a brief period the lawns can look amazing but they don’t come through the winter well and require constant over seeding.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree about what you've said about rye! I loved it initially because it reacts well to a good feed, but it can be so inconsistent and it's quite demanding on how much you need to water, feed and mow.
      If these bent/fescue lawns survive the winter, then I'm completely sold. Not as much work, easier to maintain, look good cut short.

    The bottom level,is winning but l'm a Leeds supporter,we are used to it😂
    You need to cut the top off the laurels to thicken them up.
    Good advice,sometimes its better to leave it to do its own thing,instead of of pampering it.

    Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, I’m disappointed with my predominately rye lawn, looks great for a few weeks and then needs stuff doing to it, I’m all up for some maintenance as a hobby but it’s all consuming and lost it’s fun. I was undecided on the lawn association luxury mix or Boston Seeds quality lawn but based on your stripes my lawn association worries are gone, thanks. I’m going to scalp and heavily scarify and overseed in September and if needed another round in Spring, if it works great I would have had to do that with the rye seed anyway, if not I will kill off next Autumn and start again. I have the Cambridge too and got the verticutter and scarification cartridges, made a bit of a difference and lost the weed grasses which is awesome but still lack that density in the grass, if I have to verticut a bit more to keep on top of the thatch that’s fine by me, well worth the investment if you are still on the fence about getting them 👍🏼

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's gone much better than I initially thought it would this year. I had this vision os it being a really light shade of green without defined stripes. But the stripes don't seem to go (which I'm a fan of).
      Your plan sounds good. No harm in over seeding with it now because like you said, you would have been over seeding anyway. Hope it works out!
      I've had my eyes on the Einhell scarifier recently. Was thinking of going with that as it is a big cheaper, but may still pick up the cartridges. Undecided. Knowing me, I'll end up with the lot 😅

    MY UPDATE - I’m about 9 months ahead of you. I changed back lawn from rye to bent/fescue. Almost zero POA this summer. Never had to overseed it. Bent/fescue lawn a lot better if you’ve got a big dog (we’ve got Newfoundland) that rips up grass when running about - it fills in quickly by regular cutting without overseeding. I did get some disease recently but light scarifying, iron treatment & it disappeared. So I’m about to rip up rye grass in front lawn and change that to bent fescue also.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's boss! I'm considering doing the exact same to my front lawn next spring. It's good to hear that someone else has committed to bent/fescue and had great results.

    Looks good, really pleased to see it looking like this after the start of the year. Can I ask if the top level has dropped a bit, in parallel to the edge to the bottom bit?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It has dropped somewhat, but not as much as I expected it too. I thought once it settled it would drop further. I guess it may do with more time, but I'm hoping I can keep the level above the border.

    The garden is looking great. Any tips on overspreading a rye grass lawn with bent and fescue?

    • @xJEC23
      @xJEC23 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m doing the same, based on what I’ve been told by a lawn professional it won’t do any harm (you can buy bent fescue with rye grass in the mix) but will take a few years for the lawn to become a fully bent fescue lawn, perennial rye grasses can live for up to 5 to 6 years but do thin out quickly over time and the bent fescue will crowd it out. If you are impatient and don’t have too big a space to deal with spray it off, scarify and reseed, I have 600m2 so going to overseed and see how it goes

    Did you kill off the old Rye grass lawn before going with the Bent and fescue. Or did you just scalp it, overseed and top dress with the new seed(s)?

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can put a light feed down once you get germination. It's all about getting that plant to mature quickly, especially at this time of year. It's only going to cool. The quicker you get it there, the better

    I have verticut my bent/fescue about 4 or 5 times this year to keep on top of the overcrowding of the grasses with excellent results. I suppose the acid test is winter for me and the problems that it brings with worm casts and lack of sunlight.

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've not verticut this year, but it's something I'll be doing next year. Worm casts has been mad recently. Bit of an annoying one to deal with!

  • @Arietje

      That's it. The big test through winter! I'm sure I'll be at the window every day watching it 😅
      Going to document it as much as I can. It's going to thin, but hopefully nowhere near as bad as the rye, and like you said, it will be interesting to see how long it take to recover.

      To be honest, the dog doesn't wee on the lawn much, it's only caught the edges where he as tried to wee up against a plant. It's died in places, but it's filled in pretty quickly I've noticed.

  • @boydec28

    What's your take on the 4-in-1 miracle grow? It feeds and kills weeds. Does this just feed the grass or the soil? Thanks

    • @NoviceGardener
      @NoviceGardener  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be honest, I’m not a huge fan because weed killer is best applied in liquid form so that I can be absorbed by the leaf. Same for moss control too.
