Scotty Kilmer I am not sure if you have thought about the controls scheme, however it can make a difference on how the parking brake operates during a failure, like if the software/wiring fail “open” or “closed” as far as the actual electronic relays states land. I’ve written software in the Industrial world and there are certain components you want to act during a failure which is decided on the level of life safety involved. But I agree with the preference of feeling the actual tension in the Brake as well as an actual shifter in vehicles with 4wd.

electric brakes have been used on heavy trailers for so long, i don't think it's a big concern. ...so what about steering by wire, electric gas, and brake pedals. people always complain when something is new. I constantly check brake lines seems only ones that out live the vehicle are made out of stainless steel or that nickel/copper tubing.

@@edyacheraii4279 Yeah, I live on the coast of Maine. I have had brake lines fail on me twice so far in my lifetime due to corrosion. The first time it happened was less than 200 miles after an annual safety inspection. That mechanic never got my business again, and that shop has been out of business for years. The second time was in a relative's car.
In both cases, I was darn glad that I could pull on that handbrake lever and use it to control the rear brakes and bring the car safely to a halt. Car companies can take their over-engineered solutions to problems that don't exist and stick them where the sun doesn't shine.

    • @edyacheraii4279
      @edyacheraii4279 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@melinuxf00l I hear ya there, I’m a professional mechanic in Pa if I see steel hydraulic brake lines that even look like they’re going to fail I won’t pass the vehicle for the annual safety inspection. The correct way to fix the hydraulic lines is to replace the line point to point unfortunately if other hydraulic steel lines are just as bad you end up replacing all of them. That’s the worst thing the vehicle manufacturers put in was that electric e-brake if a line fails now it’s going to have to get towed or fix it where it sits. I’ve picked up vehicles without that electric e-brake (as long it wasn’t that pump to set foot cable brake) to replace the steel lines with 9-10 the nickel/copper hydraulic line (it’s DOT approved) or if I’m doing a muscle car prefabricated stainless steel hydraulic brake lines (ordered from summit racing)
I hope they discontinue that electric e-brake because that is a safety hazard for 2 reasons (1) if your hydraulic brake line fails (2) if your vehicle shuts off with an electric failure 😕

Back in the seventies while I was in my early twenties and driving on the busy city streets of Cleveland Ohio I had an unexpected major brake failure whilst making a turn at the crossing of two busy intersections. I was also driving a vehicle with a stick shift transmission. I was about to turn onto the entrance ramp to the freeway to go home and had to make a quick decision on what action to take.
I only had use of my manually hand operated hand brake to stop or slow my car which worked quite well. I only had to train my mind to use my right hand to stop or slow the car instead of instinctively using my right foot to stop the car. I also had to learn how much pull to use to get the desired results. I didn't want to come to a screeching halt when all I wanted to do was slow down a bit.
I quickly thought it through and decided it would be safer for me to get on the interstate where I would be using my brakes less than if I took the side streets home where I would be doing a lot more stop and go.
Turns out I was right. I only had two exits to go and drove at a speed that would cause me to have less need to use my brakes and I also kept my distance from the vehicles in front of me to also get the same results.
I would never have been able to do that with the new "emergency" brake systems they are using now.
When I got home I took a look to see what the problem was. If I remember correctly what had happened was the master cylinder had failed and I lost all braking on all four wheels. Brake fluid leaking all over the place. Back in those days you could easily fix your own cars. Not so today with all the electronics and computer controlled systems. You need to buy all this expensive equipment and then learn how to use it. No easy task. Back in the old days you just bought a wrench and there wasn't much training needed to understand how to use it.

      You’re kidding, right?
On an old car... you needed to change the oil every 3000 miles, grease the suspension and drive shaft at the same time, remove, clean, and repack wheel bearings every year, do a coolant change and rad flush every two years, tune up including new plugs (that had to be gapped), new HT leads, cap and rotor, points and condenser every 10,000 miles, rebuild the carb every 20,000 miles. Adjust the valve lash every 10,000 miles and re and re the heads to do a valve job at 50,000 miles. And at 100,000 miles... most likely it was ready for the junkyard.
Today’s cars don’t need anything except fluids and filters, tires and brakes, maybe a battery for the _first_ 100,000 miles.... and after that it still runs better than anything made before 1990 out of the showroom. Get a light after 10 years and 200,000 miles? Get your $20 OBD code reader and clear it or replace the offending O2 sensor for $100 and two beer worth of work _AFTER_ you drive it home or even months after rather than on the side of the road or after it was towed.

      @dragon81heart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Bartonovich52 uhhh, you don’t work on your own cars do you?
Maintenance on cars from the 80s are pretty much the same as brand new cars
New cars need to be greased and have oil changes and everything just as much to keep them dependable
Never ever buy into this marketing hype to gullible people about 100,000 mile service intervals!
For example, while the newer coolant CAN last for 100,000 miles in perfect conditions, hardly anyone’s driving habits fit into those conditions
Same with wheel bearings, grease intervals, etc
(It’s actually advancement in the fluids and greases that make them last longer, not the cars themselves)
And things like spark plugs, you can put platinum tipped plugs in ANY old car. Same with fluids
Yeah while some carburetors on older cars/trucks might need a few adjustments over time, but the was taken care of in the 1980s when everything went to fuel injection
Just because a salesman claims something does NOT mean it’s true lol
Please keep your wits and use common sense
You will be glad you did

    • @dragon81heart
      @dragon81heart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Bartonovich52 oh and btw every gasoline engine needs it’s spark plugs to be gapped properly
Everything from a 1940 Ford Tudor, a 1973 Chrysler Córdoba, an ‘88 Honda Accord, to a 2019 Lexus
There are only two kinds of vehicles that do not require gapping the spark plugs...diesels and electronic cars lol
(As they don’t use spark plugs)
And you can even put the modern platinum tipped plugs in any car or truck
Hell you can put them in your good ol flathead Briggs and Stratton lawnmower instead of the “old fashioned” RJ19LM Champions if it suits your fancy
But they will still need to be gapped
(Which btw gapping a spark plug takes all of 15 seconds to do lol)
If you haven’t gapped the plugs in your vehicle, go out tomorrow morning and do it immediately.
And just incase you dont have the tool, any auto parts store sells them for about $3.00 dollars
Honestly many mechanics, me included, would argue that some of the most dependable, reliable, and least maintenance requiring vehicles were made in the 1980s and 90s
Less sensors and electrical connections that corrode and go bad
      Less servos that wear out
      Less emissions systems that malfunction
80s and 90s cars and trucks had comparatively simple engines that just worked
Especially if they had a Honda or Toyota badge (sorry if I’m sounding like you too much Scotty, but it’s true lol)
Or take one of the most dependable domestic engines ever made for example
The Ford 300 inline 6 engine
One of the best engines ever made, and hardly ever needing anything but routine maintenance
(Especially after it was fuel injected in ‘87, but even the carbureted 300s are amazing. Just have to spend a few minutes every year or two with a screwdriver to adjust the carb)
They were an engine design dating back to the 1960s (or even 50s in some ways) and were super well engineered and overbuilt
Easily getting 200K-300K and more miles with very little maintenance
And you didn’t even need to adjust or change the timing belts or chains like modern cars as it used timing gears that pretty much would last forever
Remember, the saying “new and improved” is very often nothing more than simply just a saying companies use to sell products

I was wondering about those new electronic emergency brakes switch they are putting on vehicles now. Another thing that Honda did that makes me glad I didn't buy that 2019 CR-V. Great information Scotty as most people, including me, didn't even think about those going out and not being a cable. Expensive for sure to fix!

We had the e-brake get stuck on when the battery died in a remote area when we were out camping in their CX-5. Jumped started, let it run a while to get the battery topped back up. Upon trying to drive, "Service e-brake system" was displayed. We couldn't get this issue to clear, the e-brake was stuck on and couldn't drive. Shutting down, disconnecting the battery and reconnecting resolved the issue.

Yep, VW is the worst for this. Others are easier like domestic brands, though I wouldn't know rust up here make them all a pain. I will say I prefer the European made rotors compared to the domestic crap that's made in China, the euro ones usually aren't crumbling apart when trying to take them off which is always fun.

Scotty, back in 1977 I had a Mustang II. That was the year of a seemingly ENDLESS, SEVERE AND SNOWY winter. Living in southern Ohio, many times when approaching an intersection, you were forced to stop coming down an incline.
I discovered if I led with the hand operated emergency brake and feathered in with the toe brake I could not only stop quicker, but always maintained my line.
