3 years late but fun fact, several passengers and flight crew after the incident would tell the media that the landing was surprisingly smooth. The animation here makes it seem more dramatic.

I'm so conflicted. They were flying through hail big enough to damage the airframe. That should have been the first sign to GTFO. Then the engines ate shit and they hot-started them both and burned them out. Engine 2 could have waited for full relight procedure, following the fast relight of engine 1 which would have avoided inner turbine meltdown. Then they decided to continue to New Orleans rather than land at the naval base. Great landing nonetheless but this was a bit of a cowboy moment that could have been prevented.

Surprised this wasn’t mentioned, but that levee was at the back of the NASA facility in New Orleans where I worked for many years. It’s in New Orleans East - the Michoud Assembly Facility, where the Saturn V boosters were built as well as the Space Shuttle External Tanks. The main NASA building there (Bldg 350) had photos of it and the plane/crew next to the main offices. It was an amazing feat, and just miraculous that nobody was hurt. NASA presented the crew with awards as well. :) I think this was 1988...?

A few days later, they decided to tow the plane to Saturn Boulevard (which was a runway during the Facility's WWII plane building days), and with minimal fuel, a replaced engine, test pilots, and FAA approval, they took off from Saturn Boulevard and landed it at New Orleans airport.

The touch down was smooth..but the DECELERATION from say 120 mph to 0 was hard..due gear tires sank on the wet grass..logically for such a big machine with small tires...

Why is everybody talking about that he only had one eye. The problem wasn't the eye. The problem was that the two engines turn off. The pilot was a better pilot than most pilots that have their two eyes because he landed that big plane without the engines power and only with one eye.
and such concerned "everybody" should know that he obtained revalidation of his pilot's license after losing the eye on a special program for war veterans in the US

still gotta say this again, there isn't a thing called altitude alert in the cockpit, they flash the same master caution button regardless of the warning type
edit: there do be altitude warning in the cockpit, but it's not the altitude as how high the plane is, it's the cabin altitude (cabin pressurization)

I've been out to that levee where he landed that plane. It's even more amazing when you see it in person. If I remember right, they studied the whole thing for several days trying to figure out how to get it out of there, and finally flew it out.

I always admired this this pilot. He used to fly prop planes in and out of the jungles of Central America and South America while being shot at by guerillas and that's how he lost his eye. I just don't understand how he was able to fly a commercial airliner with 1 eye. Passengers and crew have to be very, very happy he was flying the plane.
He's always called a hero but many people don't see the whole picture. Flying a Boeing 737 and while in the air he loses 1 engine and stays cool, then he loses the 2nd engine and stays super cool and calm. He only had a few minutes and had to made a quick decision and then the the final minute he see's a levy but flying in the wrong direction, with no engines and close to the ground makes a very gutsy move and turns the plane towards the levy, this is an amazing feat of flying and a beautiful landing.
I flew F-4's in Vietnam, if I was in his position, I would have picked the water. Boeing 737 are very heavy planes when loaded with passengers,crew and luggage. You have to remember he fly in and out of the jungles with shot up planes, losing an engine and damage to flaps, rudder, landing gear and superstructure, he knows what a plane can and can't do. This gave him a huge advantage.
Cockpit tapes prove how cool and calm he was through the whole ordeal.
The reason I would pick the water to land my F-4 is the following:
No engines and very low altitude I wouldn't pick the levy. Plane is too heavy and may not have enough "runway" to stop the plane, and I would not make that maneuver (turn) with a minute to go.
I have been shot at many times with anti aircraft, missiles and Migs. I consider myself a good pilot with an excellent record. I would have to put this guy a level above me.
BTW: Boeing came with a crew and installed 2 new engines, check the plane and flew it off the levy.

I believe that was the engineering pilot or something. Most flights have 3 people in the cockpit. A captain. Co-pilot and someone else who is in charge or making sure flight attendants know what’s going on in case the captain is busy and manages the engines/controls

Atalanta571: after initiating a side slip, And prior to landing, the pilot must orient the aircraft normally for glide and touchdown. You do not land with a side slip and you do not land slower because you were sideslipping just prior to touchdown.
Sideslip allows you to safely lose altitude rapidly so that you can land at the desired spot without over shooting it.
Side slip is not a dangerous or risky maneuver, it is easier to do than a steep turn. The problem is most pilots do not practice it. Excellent pilots, such as bush pilots, they use it every day.
An aircraft of any size can do a side slip. It is not restricted to small aircraft. A lot of disinformation is propagated in this video so as to further dramatize the action.

I heard they fixed the plane, and actually flew it away from there too. It was the first time in aviation history that a passenger jet liner landed, and took off from a place other than an airport runway.
According to the Wikipedia article on this flight, they had to change one engine at the levee to get it out of there...they then drove it up onto a paved access road, took off, and flew it to NOLA's commercial airport for enough maintenance to declare it airworthy.

Amazing how some of these incidents seem almost too good to be true. It really speaks to the inventiveness of humans to come up with landings like these that save people from serious harm or death.

What superb flying!! I've seen this several times, still amazed, full of admiration for the crew. One thing to point out: binocular vision from having the use of two eyes only distinguishes depth to less than 20 feet. Therefore, happily, the captain's having only one eye did not affect his ability to judge distances beyond the front of the cockpit.
They were lucky that there wasn't a Chevy on the levee.

I have flown on this plane a few times after it was sold to southwest. The plane had a name in the company called Levee spirit. I am a flight attendant and when I flew on it sometimes I would just think about this accident. This plane was just retired 1.5 years ago.

Amazing landing, the pilot saved many lives. It turns out they flew through a thunderstorm which flooded the engines, the water stalled the engines. They tried a restart but to no avail. Since then they've made changes to engines to drain water.
Those guys did great. Fantastic landing, and saved lives. great stuff.

Agreed, Pipipilots cannot handle those bad runways and less automation they all enjoy in USA and other places. Try a MToW take off on a muddy hot dirt runway and then fly around t-storms to another muddy one. Most non Bush Pilots can't.

***** Captain Richard de Crespigny is known for his modest demenor and CRM ( Crew Resource Management) skills. To say he "cashed in" is disrespecting the 35 years of training and experience it took to get to the level of skill to land a damaged A380 safely. Its like 35 years of training for the one day when it made a huge difference to the passengers and crew on the aircraft.
Just like Capt. Sully and others, Capt. de Crespigny is working to improve safety in aviation. They both deserves the respect and recognition that came from a very difficult emergency.
