Hi everyone! We filmed this vlog a couple weeks ago and it’ll be our last vlog for the foreseeable future. :( We are now back in Austin and staying at Kathryn’s parent’s house during the Coronavirus pandemic. We wrote a post about the decision, which you can read here: th-cam.com/users/postUgyfGh08a0Y4rnfQOGZ4AaABCQ We hope to be back on the road and traveling again soon, but until then, we have 92 other vlogs you can watch and tons of blogs and guides to read for you to plan future trips. We hope everyone stays safe and healthy!
Adventures of A plus K Wow! I was born in Austin, and now live about 45 minutes from Lexington BBQ. I’ve had barbecue all over the state, and enjoy the various kinds, AND the hush puppies. Thanks for previewing it for other travelers.
Nixon's is good, but Captain Bob's in Hertford is way better. Besides, Nixon doesn't use charcoal, and they are more focused now on their catering business than their buffet, which is hardly ever open.
I love both styles of North Carolina bbq! The next time the both of you visit, you should check out the restaurant in Raleigh called the Pit. The Pit has both styles and it's amazing!
I grew up in Lexington, now I live in Shelby (another great BBQ town). Everyone seems to go to the Monk when they visit Lexington- guess it’s just the fame. My preference was alway Backcountry BBQ or the BBQ Center. Great vid you two did a great job. Couple things, the sauce in the bottle at the Monk is not representative of Lexington style dip which is thin, bright red in color and opaque. It is poured over the meat and used to make the red slaw. Also, with all NC BBQ the slaw is not really a side item, it is intended to be paired with the meat with each bite. The tanginess of the slaw compliments the sweet and smoke of the meat.
We will have to try those spots next time! Picking which ones to visit was SO hard and we could’ve kept going but our wallet said no 😜 We really like the slaw + meat combo (vs. by itself). We will have to eat it more like that next time. Thanks for the local insight!
Adventures of A plus K and if you ever get to Shelby stop by Bridges, Red Bridges (no relation) or The Flying Pig. Interesting story on how the Lexington style spread through Western NC: Both of the Bridges from Shelby apprenticed under Warren Stamey (Stamey’s BBQ) in Lexington. When returning to Shelby and starting their own establishments, they put their own spin on the style, taught others where it spread through the mountain communities eventually becoming known as the western style of NC BBQ. At least that’s how legend has it anyway. 😀
Last time I was in that area (my family is all through Polk and Rutherford county) I couldn't find good western style anywhere. I'll have to make my way to Shelby next time I'm down that way and try the Flying Pig.

We have lived in Greenville (right outside of Ayden and have family there) and we have lived in Clemmons (right outside of Lexington) and eaten both types of BBQ. We LOVE the Starlight Inn!! We knew you had to pick that as an option for EAstern BBQ as soon as you said you were trying both places. It always wins out for us, but we also love Lexington Style :). Bs BBQ in Greenville is another one we like a lot!
I went to Skylight inn BBQ yesterday 4 the first time ever. LOVED IT . Worth the trip. Even happier to know Sam Jones is right down the street from where I live. I thought the cornbread was great!
I'm from Lexington, NC and I think you would really enjoy our BBQ festival we have it every year in the fall. I'll have to try eastern style now it definitely looked delicious and y'all seemed to have a good time. The two biggest rivalries inside of our great state are BBQ and Basketball so I am all for watching someone explore either of those rivalries from an outside perspective. 😂
The best is Lexington Sailsbury Bar B Que that is pit-cooked and brown chopped on a plate and dip none on meat but on the side, and lean chopped is good on a sandwich, Smokey Joe's is good in Lexington.
I really enjoyed watching this vlog...loved everything from the intro when you start the van up to the outtakes at the end! You two always make me smile and it’s so heart warming for me to see how happy your travels make you. Glad to have you back in Austin safe but I do want to see you continue your travels soon so I can live through you! 😘❤️❤️❤️🐶

Next time you're in NC you HAVE to make it down to Shelby and go to Red Bridges BBQ. Definitely try the red slaw with the meat! You haven't had the best until you've gone there. They also have the BEST hushpuppies!
I am a new subscriber and thoroughly enjoyed this video. I'm from the Eastern part of the state and Skylight Inn is my absolute favorite place to eat. I ate there today, in fact. Thank you for trying "our" style. You picked a great one to try!
Thank you so much for watching and for joining us on our adventure! 🤗 We sooo wish we had eaten there today too, we loved Skylight Inn so much! 😋 Any other good Eastern spots we should check out next time?
@@AdventuresofAplusK I'll give you some! Upscale and delicious - Chef and the Farmer (Kinston, NC) *Award winning celebrity chef Vivian Howard who has had a couple of tv shows on PBS* Seafood - Holland's Shelter Creek Restaurant (Holly Ridge, NC) *near Topsail Island, Wilmington* Delicious country comfort food - Mike's Farm (Beulaville, NC) *Plan ahead on this one..best time to visit is near Christmas...arrive not long after they open..and you will have the best macaroni and cheese of your life). Eastern style BBQ - Wilbers (Goldsboro, NC)...Sid's BBQ (Beulaville, NC - Saturday mornings only).
You should have mixed the slaw with the meat. On a sandwich you typically find pork topped by the slaw, and you add sauce on top. The white slaw is mayonnaise-based, the red slaw is vinegar-based, which accounts for the tang you noted.
Yes, Parkers on hwy 301 in Wilson! Order it "family style". They bring bowls of BBQ, fried chicken, and sides based on the number of people at the table, then you can just fill your plate with what you really want.
Born & raised on the east side, I've lived on the west side for years now. Both are good depending on where you go. Lots of really good hole in the wall places. I prefer eastern style. Being from Johnston county, there's a few Smithfields BBQ around & they're good. It's all good though lol.
I didn't think i'd ever post a comment like this, but it's 2 a.m, i've had a few drinks-- so lets go. Lexington style is good, there's no doubt. The slight tomatoe-y acidity works, but most of the time they make it too sweet! Plus, it's similar to other states style of bbq in that regard. Take East NC style, it has that acidity to cut the richness of the pork fat--crushed red peppers to give that bit of spice. Add coleslaw for the crunch and a bun (I like rye bread myself) and it's just perfection. There's just no comparison from any other state on the uniqueness of East NC bbq.
I grew up in Winston-Salem NC. Favorite barbecue spot by far was Mr. Barbecue on Peters Creek Parkway. They're still around, so if you're ever back that way, you won't be disappointed. Also, you need to try another North Carolina staple--Cheerwine. They have it in the fountain at Mr. Barbecue.
Buns BBQ in the small town of Windsor, NC has eastern BBQ taste and their slaw is AMAZING because it is NOT SWEET, rather zingy and refreshing. It’s a no-frills hole in the wall kind of place, but man is it so good!!!
The sauce cuts it perfect,, the fat in pork needs that. I live in southeast n.c.. as southeast as it gets. Wilmington N.C. ,great food, great people. Shrimp and grits.. pulled and chopped pig.. so many awesome foods and styles. 😊❤❤❤ love the review. ❤ 15:36
I was watching this one too see if I recognized any of the BBQ places (and to get recommendations) but I did a double take when y'all stopped at Jubala because my son works there. Then we did a triple take when we realized that he's the kid in the black shirt in the kitchen after you first walk in. Great video!
@@AdventuresofAplusK I didn't even notice at first, but I called him down to watch the video and he was like "Oh yeah, there I am". And then we laughed way louder and longer than was warranted because we've been suck in the house for more than a week and we're all going a little stir crazy.
From an eastern NC local...if you ever come back, try eating a little bit of the slaw at the same time as the BBQ. The eastern slaw is pretty sweet on its own, but it's often meant to be eaten with the zingier BBQ at the same time, often on a sandwich. You might also find the Pig in a Puppy at King's BBQ interesting...eastern style BBQ and coleslaw served as a sandwich but instead of a typical bun, they use an hamburger bun sized hushpuppy hollowed out and filled with the bbq/slaw.
I was thinking the exact same thing. A little BBQ and a little slaw together is the perfect combination. I am definitely a fan of Eastern style but probably because I grew up eating it.
Skylight is the only Eastern style place that does that with cornbread.. everybody else does hushpuppies and has fries, etc... that's what I grew up with in Goldsboro, which is on your bbq trail map.. also you left off the other huge component to ENC style.. which is bbq chicken. it's not what you think. I always get the combo plate...
I agree with the Eastern NC BBQ being the best. There are so many other good ones like B's BBQ in Greenville NC and Moores in New Bern. The reason it is better I think is because the Lexington style is not too different from BBQ anywhere else in the USA. However, Eastern NC BBQ is truly unique and you just don't get that taste and experience anywhere else.
Working my way chronologically through your videos! I’m from originally from near Lexington and now live in Raleigh. They’re are SO many great places that aren’t on the “bbq trail.” Happy to share even better restaurants for the next time you’re in the state! (The Triangle is such a foodie area - I could lead you on an awesome tour!)
You can get hushpuppies and all the same sides at eastern style Q restaurants too. Add some Brunswick stew, fried okra, and banana pudding to complete your feast. I too like hushpuppies better than corn bread, and many eastern style places serve them...sometimes bottomless amounts. For a Q sandwich, put eastern style + the slaw on a steamed burger bun! Heaven in a sandwich!

Since I’m from Cleveland county NC I’m partial Lexington style. Since our local restaurant Red Bridges was trained by the Monk family it is an institution here. Actually my problem with Eastern NC style is more of the slaw, instead of the sauce. If they offered the BBQ “red” slaw then it wouldn’t be as big of a letdown.
I’m not a huge fan of pork but that looked outstanding 👌the smell in the kitchens must have been delicious , loved the chefs accent super friendly too , in the U.K. we call the crunchy bits crackling ,got me craving pork now 😁, great job guys 👍👏👏👏👏👏
Oh my gosh the crunchy bits were the best!!! And the guy working the pit was so nice-the southern hospitality we experienced the whole day was incredible. We still can’t believe they let us back there! 🙌🏼
We put Cracklins in the corn bread here in N.C. too. We smoke a pork butt for 12 hours(depending on weight) use yellow mustard as a binder then a Basic BBQ rub and smoke at 225 for 12 hrs. When the bone pulls free with no resistance it's done. BBQ sauce apple cider vinegar, red peppers flakes, salt, pepper, brown sugar, and ketchup.
I strongly prefer western. I've had BBQ in Raleigh, Wilson, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, NC for the eastern style. For the western style I've had BBQ in Concord, Kannapolis, Locust, China Grove, Lexington and Albemarle, NC. A lot of people I know refer eastern BBQ as 919 BBQ and western as 704 BBQ due to area codes.
Little Pigs barbecue in Statesville has been in operation since 1961 and the chop the barbecue as you order it right at the counter. Their sauce is mostly vinegar and it too is whole shoulder.
Born and raised in the Charlotte area but moved to Florida 5 years ago. Some BBQ places down here try to claim Carolina style BBQ but its never right and its so disappointing. Im making my own real BBQ tomorrow and cant wait. Definitely will be Lexington style with the red slaw.
I prefer Eastern style bbq, but not a fan of tomato products lol. so it makes sense. Corn bread, I make my own with Jiffy mix and creamed corn. It Makes sure the cornbread is moist.
I can't believe you were in Raleigh and only got coffee. The Pit in Raleigh is the best bbq in the world in my opinion. And I have been to the Lexington bbq festival.
I know the secret to the best BBQ on the planet. It is BBQ slow roasted with strictly hickory wood. A lot of places have changed over to gas fired pork. That like eating roast pork from your electric stove oven.
While still a relatively new restaurant, Camel City BBQ Factory in Downtown Winston Salem has phenomenal eastern style BBQ. Though, they also do their own spin on Brisket, ribs, sausage and even smoked chicken! I would definitely recommend checking them out if you are ever in the area!
Eastern North Carolina is were all of my maternal grandfather's family , Is from. And I have to say that really enjoy west Carolina style. I enjoy the Eastern style the most.

I just moved to NC a couple of years ago but as a VA native, I had ventured down and sampled the BBQ many times prior to becoming a resident. I also prefer the eastern style, generally speaking, but have had some Lexington style that blew me away as well. I'm so glad you went to Skylight, I had seen it on TV a long time ago but forgot about it. It is only about 30 minutes from where I live now and it looks like its not too far from one of my favorite bakeries. I will definitely have to go check it out this weekend.
What are your thoughts of VA BBQ? I am a VA native as well and we have Pierces BBbQ in Williamsburg, VA and their sauce is tomato based. I prefer Eastern NC BBQ.

1:20 Skylight Inn.
8:10 Lexington.
Thanks for sharing! We love it all and we're glad we got to try both styles. Thanks for watching!
Where are you guys originally from? Thanks for enjoying our local barbecue!
We are from Austin, Texas!
And... you have made us hungry! Great work guys. Enjoy being home.
Hahaha this little break is actually going to be a good chance for us to slow down on eating 😅😅
@@AdventuresofAplusK 🤣🤣
Looks so good! Omg skylight right?
We looooved skylight inn! We really wish we would’ve grabbed some to go!
Short Sugars Pit Bar-B-Q Reidsville n.c is the Best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We’ll have to try it next time! Thanks!
Two words... DUH. AMMMM!!!!
Love your videos
Thank you so much for watching Andrew!
You guys need to go to Moore's , eastern NC all day
We will have to try it next time! Love Eastern NC BBQ!
Sounds delicious! I'd love to check it out one day
The sweet slaw mixes well with the barbecue!
It's really hard to find good BBQ outside of the great BBQ states and cities! We miss TX BBQ whenever we aren't in TX!
Enjoyed!!
Now I'm hungry for pork BBQ, but everything is closed!!!!
Thanks for a great time!! Stay safe everyone 😊🍁
We’re hungry again too! We may have to try to recreate this meal at my parent’s house during our break here. Stay safe! 💕
Eastern North Carolin BBQ wins! Oh yeah.
Both are good stuff!
Nothing but the eastern north carolina
We loved Eastern!
Eastern for me.
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Yummy! Looked good. Not Texas BBQ but, I guess you had to work with what you had! LOL
Hahaha Texas BBQ is still our #1! But we gotta say, North Carolina BBQ exceeded our expectations!
Yall texans stick to ur beef and leave the pork to us carolinians.
😂Ayden's Skylight Inn\ Jones BBQ=OMG Ssoo Good. Once you try it you'll never forget it 😋 BBQ & chip's of crispy skin. Oh yeah! Eastern NC 100 percent
That's some gooood stuff!
Try the Alabama BBQ Trail. Starts up in Huntsville all the way down to Mobile and Gulf Shores.
Sounds amazing, we'd love to!
I prefer Eastern style bbq, but not a fan of tomato products lol. so it makes sense. Corn bread, I make my own with Jiffy mix and creamed corn. It Makes sure the cornbread is moist.
Western/Lexington style is more of a Piedmont thing. The farther west you go in NC, it's usually sweeter. It's like there's 3 different sauces.
Need to try White Swan Smithfield
Thanks for the tip!
I’d almost walk from tx to either Lexington or Ayden for a barbecue sandwich and hush puppies! Have driven there for pork barbecue numerous times.
It’s good stuff!
Oooo thanks for the tip Joseph!
you guys were in Ayden, you should have stopped in Greenville while out there and tried Parkers BBQ.....outstanding as well.
Oooo another reason for us to go back! Thank you for the recommendation 🙌🏼🙌🏼
If you ever come to Chattanooga TN I know some great BBQ one has some great Brisket. I want to do a US bbq tour.
Ooo yes we’d love that! We hung out in Chattanooga for a few days in January and would love to come back when it’s warmer! 🙌🏼
@@AdventuresofAplusK Hope all this craziness will be gone by then right now everything is closed down for dine-in service.
We hope so too! Crossing our fingers this passes sooner rather than later 🤞🏼
Red slaw if you’re eating the meat outside the bun. Mayonnaise slaw if it’s a sandwich. Vinegar based sauce only for good barbecue
Ok good to know! Thanks!
East bbq is the bomb, lotta people don’t like the vinegar base because they just aren’t used to it. Pleasantly surprised with the choice
Be safe Guys-Eat Well!
Thanks William! Stay safe and healthy! 🤗
You could stop in goldsboro and get all the real BBQ you could want. Ayden native , and we have at least 2 of the best places in the state.
You should try Williams Brothers BBQ in Canton Georgia
Oooo we are always down to try new BBQ spots!
Eastern North Carolina is were all of my maternal grandfather's family , Is from. And I have to say that really enjoy west Carolina style. I enjoy the Eastern style the most.
Yay for team eastern!
I'm from Memphis not NC, but if I have to choose Lexington for sure. That decision is just based on the sauce. I like fat and bark in my pulled pork
We love just about all BBQ!
On the map of the trail, the town of Willow Spring is just that, without the "s" at the end.
You should take that up with the NC BBQ Society...it's their map 😉 www.ncbbqsociety.com/bbqtrail.html
Eyy you stopped at NC State!
You have to try The BBQ Center in Lexington. My absolute favorite place!
Thanks so much for the recommendation!
I have lived in western NC for 15 years and this is the first time I have even heard of lexington or eastern bbq... we just call it bbq
We didn’t make it up 🤷🏻♂️

Do you have plans to go back to North Carolina in 2023?
Yer supposed to get two pieces of cornbread and out the bbq in between and go to town!
Next time! 😋
Bitters are as the name suggests and are very aromatic. Commonly used in beverages such as the old fashion.
my bbq rant Carolina isn't Memphis with coleslaw on top.
Western. Tomato based.
What's your favorite spot?
"some normal pepper" 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 aka black pepper?
Did you guys ever visit Asheville and the mountains?
We've been a couple times and attempted to film there both times, but for various reasons it hasn't gone well. Maybe third time's the charm! 😂 We love it there, though!
parker's bbq in wilson,nc only place to eat!
We'll have to put it on the list! Thanks!
Great Vlog, you guys are on to something special. Watching the both of you, one can really feel and see the love you have for each other!!! Have fun and stay safe and Happy Travels.
Thank you so much! This put a big smile on our face during a more difficult time! Thank you for watching ❤
Eastern NC BBQ is the best BBQ there is.
It was so good!!!
It is hard to find bad BBQ in NC.
Agreed!
Currituck BBQ company in Barco NC is good.
Thanks for the tip!
The very best in eastern north carolina bbq the best in the world
I just moved to NC a couple of years ago but as a VA native, I had ventured down and sampled the BBQ many times prior to becoming a resident.
Oooo yes, you gotta go! We LOVED the crispy skin that's included...totally made it for us! Enjoy some for us too!
What are your thoughts of VA BBQ? I am a VA native as well and we have Pierces BBbQ in Williamsburg, VA and their sauce is tomato based. I prefer Eastern NC BBQ.
That's BBQ slaw in N.C.
