I had took auto body in vocation so I got work at a GM dealership out of high school in 85. All Gm cars back then had orange peel like that. They also had a problem with chemical spots, supposedly from acid rain. Metallic streaking was another big problem. Needless to say we had brand new cars we had repaint before we could put them on the lot. The paint on that GNX I would rate pretty damn good for a mid 80s GM car.
I had the very first ‘86 GN registered in the greater Ft. Lauderdale area back then. About a year later, I learned there was going to be a limited run of modified Grand Nationals for the ‘87 model year and so I told myself ok, I’ll head down my local Buick dealer where I bought the ‘86 GN and order one with a $5,000 deposit. I figured when the car came in, I’d trade or sell my ‘86 and let it eat. Sticker on the car when I put down the deposit was $31,000 and change they told me and when I was finally contacted to let me know the car had arrived, I went to the dealership to check it out and found in was on the main showroom floor roped off with those velvety looking jobs they use at like a red carpet movie premier or something. I thought to myself, hmm, that’s interesting, either this thing is even more special then I had thought OR they really appreciated my business and wanted to make me feel super important LOL! Boy was I wrong. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the window sticker had an addendum added to the bottom of it by the dealer which indicated the price of the car was $75,000 bucks, yep that’s right, 75k!! I totally freaked out and went and hunted my sales guy down and asked, hey man, WTF is this crap all about🤬!!?? He explained that only 500 of the top selling Buick dealers (out of approx 2,700 dealers in North America at the time) qualified to get only one unit each and that the dealer principal decided to put a hefty premium on the car for that reason. Needless to say I was bent and argued till I was blue in the face but to no avail and was forced to demand the return my deposit, which they did. I simply could not afford a 75 thousand dollar car at that time, nor would I ever pay that much anyway, no matter how bad I wanted one. The irony is that a couple months later, GM put the Kabash on them marking it up and they were forced to sell it for list price. And they didn’t even bother letting me know and offer me first dibs considering I was the one who ordered it!! Of course they sold it immediately after having to bring the price down to normal so I missed out on owning the legendary ride because of a bunch of sleezy sales people! Bummer!!

Amazing cars in their day. I remember watching one or two of them run at Atco Raceway in NJ. I couldn't afford one of these, but I did buy a 1987 Monte Carlo SS, which I still own.
Someone made a aftermarket chip for them right after production that really gave it a performance boost. I remember reading about it in Hot Rod. It was fairly cheap as well as I recall.
A collector friend bought the last one made. It only has 68 miles and the plastic still on the seats. Buick tried to buy it back from the second owner, but he refused.

First car to log in a sub five second 0-60MPH run at 4.6 seconds as tested by Car and Driver Magazine.. This was the baddest of the bad ass cars of the 1980s...
NASCAR had nothing to do with the success of the GN/GNX, it was the performance numbers, watching one pull away from a light, and how downright luxurious this high performance car was - even with the dealership price gouging that went on - Buicks MSP was WAY below dealership pricing. I remember, I had pen in hand to sign and got back up and walked away from the salesman's desk when the price on the paperwork was so far above MSRP. Nope, not sorry, they sold every one they made, and I bought a house the next month.
This car was so insanely fast for an 80s car. When an 86 IROC-Z was pulling 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and Magnum PI's Ferrari was doing mid fives, this thing was doing mid fours!
I really like the GNX but I'd prefer one that has been used weekly say 25 miles or so or at least twice a month the problem with something like this if it started being driven and warmed up well is every gasket and seal hose will most definitely leak because they are old and dried up but it's mint I've been around old cars a long time and ones that get used weekly or monthly are better than ones that sit for long periods or years at a time of course someone with the money to purchase such a car will have no problem replacing gaskets seals and hoses

One at Barrett Jackson sold for 250K
I believe in taking good care of my cars but I’m not about to let them sit Just for someone else to enjoy them.
Kendrick Lamar brought me here as well. $GNX
Would be great to have Peter check in :)
I'll put the bug in his ear
This car was so insanely fast for an 80s car. When an 86 IROC-Z was pulling 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and Magnum PI's Ferrari was doing mid fives, this thing was doing mid fours!
True!
An American sports car having a V6 TURBO is not very appealing though...
I seen one today in Apple Valley California.
True ,me too but chances are it will sit in some rich guys garage as an investment. At the end of the day its a car ,drive it a little.
@@richardmorris7063 l am the original owner of a blue 1984 Monte Carlo SS it has gone through a 305 350 383 now has a LS2 with ported LS3 heads crate engine the body and chassis has 98,000 miles on it it has been painted once base coat clear coat original blue color it is very clean no rust even the underneath is rust free and under the hood trunk and over the door window door sills it's been garage kept but l do try to drive it 25 miles or so twice a month on weekends when it's not wet and it does have a 1986 Buick GN 8.5 rearend because the 7.5 made noises after the 383 engine was installed it has a built 700r4 transmission with a 3000rpm lockup stall converter and has a holley 850 HP carberator the 305 leaked like a sive and the 350 from sitting for years can't imagine having a car as old as this with only 100 miles is not a car it's a fullsized model l think my car spends 92 percent of its life in the garage this GNX must spend 99.9 in the garage but regardless it's a very valuable and nice GNX over the time with my SS l bet l have 40,000 invested including the price of the car new with all the engine swaps paint suspension and other upgrades but have had it and enjoyed it for 38 years regardless it's still no GNX but this car is way out of my blue collar buget
@@gloriamaletta8667 that's more like it,these aren't paintings or baseball cards.Gotta keep the fuel fresh & drive them sometimes ,just not in bad weather.
@@richardmorris7063 l hear you l don't see how people can just let them sit causes more damage than using them occasionally your right fresh gas once a month oil changes every 6 months bet sometimes 350-500 miles every 6 months
@@richardmorris7063 with no heat inside the engine from sitting just builds moisture inside the engine that will eventually destroy it getting the engine to operating temperature occasionally is good for it
Just heavy. Faster than most!
That orange peel is amazing lol
Is this the mint GNX that was on Leno's garage?
Is this car still available for sale I'm interested in buying the car please respond to this message
Sold already !! I didn't get to see what it was going for ?
An authentic GNX with 107 miles on it would be worth a fortune!
Buick did not decide to shut it down - GM went to FWD platform and killed it
I had to put my grand national bib on before I watched this video 🥰🥰😛😛.I remembered when these gorgeous girls came out in 1987. I graduated high school in 1986 and wanted one sooooo bad but things didn't work out. It wouldn't be a gbody if it didn't have heavy doors. Yeah I don't need one but if the ol'e wallet had deep pockets I'd have one. 🤙🤙👍👍✌✌
I always wanted one they were hard to find so i ended up buying a 87 SS Monte Carlo ......
