As someone who played with a full set of hybrids for a number of years I used to carry a "normal" gap wedge and lob wedge for shots around the green and bunkers.
Also, work your yardages out on a driving range!

Bingo. I have a 52, 56, and 60 in my bag along with a boatload of hybrid irons. It seems like Rick was intentionally handicapping himself here for the sake of content.

Yes. I have been using a set of Cleveland hybrid irons for years but they look less and less like hybrids as you progress to the shorter clubs. I happily use the hybrid SW out of bunkers and within 100 yards of the green but I have also bought 50 and 60 degree wedges

One thing I will always defend about Rick, is that every video I've ever watched by him, he's never sold himself out. If he does poorly with a packaged set, he'll let us know. And I don't remember a single instance when I've had to mash the fast forward button because he's inserted a 30-45 second advert in the middle of his round.
One thing you can truly rely on Rick for is the ability to hit play and truly sit back and chill for the full duration of his round 👍

In the best way possible, It's diabolical. .But words are just words. And who would even watch if I did post videos 😂 But some random ppl are that good. And they're not pros. It drives my brother nuts how I can take weeks to months, or even years off and come back and just shoot mid to upper 80s after a long hiatus 🙃 This year, I'm actually trying to go twice a week. Last few years been hectic. New puppy. House projects etc..This year. . .Is MY year 😊 It's the best medicine getting back into golf consistently ❤❤ Total mood booster 😊😊 anyways, Your point is still valid. Chipping and round the green even with something like Cleveland HB's which are all hollow takes practice, if you catch it right in the middle it pops off like you've swung 20% faster, if you catch it out of the bottom, it's just normal.

I’ve wondered for years why Rick has been so hesitant to replace long irons with hybrids. It’s about shooting low so don’t be afraid to make the golf a little easier. Tour pros put them in the bag, there’s no shame in it! Those 4 and 5 hybrid shots looked effortless. With all due respect, better than most 4-5 iron shots I’ve seen him hit

Hot take, I think above 15 handicaps should have hybrids up to the PW then a thick soled SW. Makes striking the ball and the game overall easier in my opinion. Plus the hybrid PW could be the main chipping club since it’s hard to fat, as well most people can’t and don’t need to hit high soft chips very often except in bunkers which is where the SW comes in.
It’s what I and several friends started with and we all went roughly from scoring 110-120 to low 90s in 2-3 months. Getting a ball in play and with good course management is more important so playing with something easy to hit is the way to go.
Love the videos like these Rick

Nice set o' clubs Rick and that was a cool round. Been using hybs for almost 2 years now, Full set 3-PW combined with cavity back wedges. I'll never touch another set of regular irons nor my other sets of blade wedges (gave'em away anyways, LOL). They're easier to hit from ANY turf, go longer, higher and flight straight. If needed there's no problem working the ball or hitting'em under the wind or trees. And yar right, they're lighter. I lov'em! Weird thing is I used to aim at the trees to get outta the woods, I mean, you gotta be so good to hit a tree aiming at it, most likely it would be a miss, but with hybrids it's different as you'll hit the darn tree not 2 outta 3, but 3 outta 2 every time! Gladly nowadays these guys keep me away from the woods LOL

This was great fun to watch. I have two hybrids a 5 and a 6. As this is my first ever set of clubs I had no idea that hybrids were at all unusual, I just accepted the set as it was. I like using them but as I’m a total novice they are just what I’ve become accustomed to. I always enjoy Rick’s no nonsense style of video, very entertaining.

My dad had back surgery and is over 70. He recently switched to hybrids all the way down to an 8 iron. It's been amazing because he can keep playing even as his speed and flexibility has dropped a ton.

Enjoyed that, these all hybrid sets are a godsend for anyone like me who can't stop shanking....if you don't care what other golfers think then you'll find the game easier with these.....but Rick's right about the wedges, especially sand....need a normal one for chips and bunkers

At 61, having only played golf for 3 years and always struggling with most of the irons I really want a set of these or something similar. I would keep my current 5 wood (it's sweet), SW and putter and I feel like I could get my score down after a bit of practice with them.

I don't know about having hybrids in the scoring clubs, but there's a strong argument to be made that lots of high handicappers could improve their medium-game by replacing clubs up to 7 iron with hybrids. The problem may be overcoming the golf ego of having 4 or 5 hybrids in the bag!
I'm a 6 handicap with good clubhead speed, and 4 years ago I replaced my 4 and 5 irons with hybrids. I get teased about it from my golf buddies, but it's worth having a high, straight, boring ball flight from 190 yards out!

For me, I currently rotate through my bag, depending on the course, driver, 3, 5 woods, 3, 4 hybrids, then 5-9 irons, and an asortment of wedges. Old school Odyssey Ice Hot. The hybrids are great, I occasionally swap in 3 and 4 irons just because. Maybe you should consider it. At least you have the space and the sym to figure out you're gapping and create the best 2024 set for your game. I know i need to take a look now that weather is breaking in NY

Better idea next time...use your own wedges, only use hybrids from pitching wedge to long hyhrids. Driver, putter obviously. I think would be surprised. No need to use the hybrid sand wedge, that's silly. If cost is a concern, just use a cheap wedge set like lazrus or kirkland.

  • @RaineRughani

I bot a set of the Forgan of St. Andrews hybrids. But I actually got on well with the 7 to PW better than the 3 to 6, which did not go as long as my Cobra One Length irons. 🤔 By the way...would like to see you review the Caley irons, and the RAM irons, which are both less than half the price of the big name manufacturers

I played with an older fella today using a full set of these hybrid irons. He had a bladed sand wedge in there in case he got into bunkers or wierd lies, but otherwise made great use out of them.
He wasn't swinging hard, but every single shot got in the air and went straight. He went round in about +8 or +9...
So totally usable, but you'd have to adapt to them.

When I was growing in the late 60s, there was an older guy at our course who used to play golf with a full set of woods and no irons, way before the invention of hybrids, with a 15 wood being the highest lofted club in the bag. My dad and I played with him several times and he was deadly with his woods. I don't remember him ever missing a fairway or green and he would always be par or better. In fact, he once told me that he was getting tired of golf because it was too easy. What a nice "problem" to have.

Nothing to with them being "too strong". More that you didn't spend any time gapping their yardages.
The first two holes were completely "user error" 😉

The driver-hybrid-hybrid was fun to watch. I'd never be able to pull hybrid for an eagle putt, as I've only had two, but it made for great content. I also think Rick would have gone under 75 on 18 after adjusting to how far the shorter hybrids were going.

I'm 73 and play to about a 25 handicap. My current set has 4, 5, and 6 hybrids then 7 thru lob wedge. The lowest numbers are much easier to hit for me than my old 3, 4, or 5 iron. There are times when I miss my trusty 6 iron though.

Thanks Rick for this plus the original review - you seem to be the only person to have done so. I didn't know about these sets so got me researching. There are loads on the 'pricier' Eleven set but I wondered if you have considered doing one on the Forgan of St Andrews F35 set which seem to be the cheapest on Amazon? There are reasonable reviews from those who have bought them. As always, your reviews are much valued. (Sorry if you're seeing this again but my original comment seems to have disappeared.)
