I have heard alot about Gunsmoke over the years and no one ever said Amanda Blake drank too much. She was the reason many people liked the show and she was known in Sacramento, CA for her tireless efforts to help abandoned animals. In fact, she was honored for that. She missed the last season because she mourned losing her very good friend who played Sam in the show. He had passed away. She came back for special movie versions later on.

From my understanding is that it was a contract dispute is why Amanda Blake didn't return to Gunsmoke. She was on a daytime soap opera from my reading of this to for a time until her passing.

Gunsmoke was what I thought a western would be like if justice was allowed to play out. Bad guys died, Matt was always a God send to the weak and non suspecting common citizen. Kitty was a firm but sweet leading lady. Matt seemed to be owned from afar. Much like most super heros are. The stars became like family. We fell in love with them. It seemed the characters were cast so perfectly.
