Loved, loved, loved this interview! James Arness my favorite western star. Admired his service during WWII and his obvious love for our country especially since my husband and I lived during Vietnam War with the sickening anti-war protest including mistreatment of our awesome soldiers who chose to serve our country as honorably as they could in the circumstances. Many times large men seem to enjoy throwing their weight around and intimidate others but he came across as a gentleman. (Need to make it clear I come from a family [and husband]of tall men-uncle 6’5” and all were gentlemen.)
I’ll be rewatching this interview several times. Also a fan of Bruce Boxleitner.

Gunsmoke was the best Western of all times. I finally got to see it 1955 probably about 1970 and my daddy. He always loved it and it would’ve been the same without James Arness rest in peace young man.

Because of my love for westerns growing up and my interest in RV traveling more recently, I want to travel out to ghost towns and the history in Boot Hills in a FORD Transit 250 cargo van outfitted for camping.
One of my hobbies I like is gold prospecting! Imagine gold prospecting while traveling in the OLD WEST and taking photos of the terrain and scenery - spectacular!

The relationship Matt had with Chester was priceless. One episode had Chester complaining about the summer heat. He said someone should invent something to block out the sun. Matt replied that someone did.
Chester said, what? Who did that? Matt replied, Stetson. Lol. So real.
Their conversations about coffee, cleaning up the office, Miss Kitty, Doc. The writing and delivery were always great. I never tire of watching life in Dodge City.

Another episode, which is a mix of previously broadcast material along with some new footage that you and Robby seamless combined into a whole new episode, that easily stands on it's own. James Arness, Peter Graves, and Bruce Boxleitner careers and roles formed memorable parts of my life. Janet's remembrances of the Jim Arness away from the set just humanize the man. So yet again another great episode.

I keep glancing at my James Arness, _Best of the West,_ Gunsmoke action figure, as I watch & listen. A unique connection to James Arness runs in my family too. Dad and Jim share birthdays, 4 years apart. Dad was in the Air Force, as a lawman, and was given the nickname _"Matt"_ by his Commander, for that connection between the Series, and our last name. 😃
Thanks for reviving these great memories, Rob, and RJ. I hope all is well on your end of the pasture.

I love to hear James Arnesss talk old school actors. You hear every word no mumbling. The same with his brother Peter every word of every sentence . They were two of my Dad's favorite actors. I love the story about John Wayne all class acts. His wife Janet a real Lady.great stories. That's why l watch old shows and films better actors and actresses.some today are good but some are awful. Make too much money and it goes to their heads also the same with some singers. Thank you for still showing some of these we should never forget them some of them did alot of good with their money. Kept their kindness and who they are. God bless them all. SLAINTE MAITH good health.

Janet is lovely, and Im glad he had her support in the end of life. Hearing about Mr Arness is like having him standing right over there..grinning in the corner. Thank You for supporting the legacy of a great actor, gentleman..and the land and stories he loved. In hard times like 2023, seems like he led, just the life he wanted. I have watched every
day, for 4 yrs now, as I'm 68, somehow missed the original showing! ( Brothers were into war movies.) So glad I found that new Channel, "Inspire," as I had never seen the early episodes. A fine man , that James Arness..oh, and Matt Dillon as well! Best to the old West!

I used to watch Gunsmoke with my dad when I was a child. I'm so happy there are 20 years of Gun Smoke! I watch the re-runs all the time. That's when tv had quality programs without bad language. James Arness and the other actors of Gun Smoke made it worthwhile. It's great to see the transition from black/white to color. The quality of the writing of the episodes through the years was amazing. It's too bad there isn't a program of this quality today!

Wow! Great interview! Gunsmoke was off the air by the time I was born in 1976, so it was not a show popular with my generation, however I grew up watching lots of John Wayne movies in the 80's on TBS and I developed a strong interest in Davy Crockett and history. I eventually developed a passion for Westerns and collected and watched as many as I could during the DVD era. Only the last few yrs have I begun truly watching TV westerns and Gunsmoke is by far the best. It sounds like James Arness was an upstanding guy and very down to earth. Just the type of humble person that should play Matt Dillon and a war hero as well, he was from a great generation.

James Arness represents a true clean lifestyle of decency to all his many followers. My Dad (04/21/17-02/14/94) was a huge fan of Gun Smoke, & I’m a huge fan of Gun Smoke! I’m pushing 80 years now & I still love watching the movies with James Arness, as well as John Wayne’s many movies! Their style of movies are awesome good family entertainment! I’ve enjoyed Gun Smoke and Wagon Train more than any others on TV. They’re fit for family to watch. There’s some important lessons in life to be learned from that sort of clean entertainment. I also loved watching Clint Eastwood on Raw Hide in my younger years, and I’m so happy to see it’s also on TV on “INSP”…! ♥️ I thank God for The Inspiration Network on TV. I met the man once. I was attending a summer camp and was a Counselor In Training on gate duty one afternoon when a small Ford Pinto approached the gate. As was our duty the 2 gatekeepers were to identify each person who came in and went out of the gate. As I bent down to look into the vehicle, I came face to face with Big Jim. He was (poor man) stuffed into the passenger seat and I believe the young lady driving was an assistant. He was very warm and nice and I treated him with respect calling him Mr. Arness. I believe he had come out to see his father Rolf whom I and others at the camp met several times. This was around the time that his dad gave the ranch that he had to the camp. The only caveat was that Rolf was allowed to remain on the property and live out his life there. I never did see the Marshall ever again and I wish I had as I really wanted to thank him for the joy he gave me every time I had watched an episode of Gunsmoke. He was a truly kind, generous and wonderful man and we shall not see the likes of him ever again. RIP Mr. Dillon

My husband and I both grew up watching Gunsmoke and still watching it on Amazon...lol. What great life lessons! We both remember when we first got color TV and saw Matt Dillon had a "pink" shirt😳. We're both huge fans of the entire cast especially Jim Arness and Ken Curtis...and Doc always looked just like my Grandpa!!!

I watched Gunsmoke in the last 6 months. I think it was Black & white TV. It was 11 Yrs worth with 32-33 episodes each. Then I guess modern TV in color & I’m still watching them. Growing up I never saw where Matt Dillion was not a sheriff but now a rancher married & had a daughter. The wife died & it was just he & daughter. She was going back east to finish her education. The next episode she was engaged. I’m still in the middle of these episodes & still watching. It’s amazing I’m not a big western movie watcher but I’m hooked & looking forward to the next episode. They’re great. Funny part I’m streaming all this episode’s. That’s called modern technology. LOL. The second sets of Gunsmoke doesn’t have Kitty, Doc, Festus or the ones that played in the first sessions in Dodge City. I loved them but I like the 2nd set also. Different but great. I would of liked to see John Wayne & he together. I have to say 2 of the best actors ever. Besides 2 of best looking male actors. This is the first time I meet his real wife. Interesting to watch & hear about his real life. Thank you Jim Arness it’s been great! Big lost for Hollywood & us! Miss Jim Arness (Matt Dillon) & John Wayne lose for all of us.

Great interview (as usual). Particularly loved the Red River comments. Recently saw the remake for the first time and felt that it was just marvelous. Not just the great acting but the cinematography was perfect. It was such a joy that I had to call my wife in (who is not a great western fan) to watch it with me.

I look forward every Sunday for these treasures and todays episode about James Arness was one of the best I have seen, and I have watched as many as TH-cam has. Mr. Word: You are THE WORD on Westerns. I suspect part of the puzzle on why Westerns are making such a resurgence is you and A WORD ON WESTERNS. You do all the old stars of yesteryear so righteous, and have a way that brings out the best of the best. I have a facebook group called: LOST ANGELES and the star of WAR OF THE WORLDS from 1952 Ann Robinson is a member, and I made a posting about the A WORD ON WESTERNS weekly series, and she chimed in about her love for you, and what you do for the preservation, of a culture. I too, take off my Resistol , and tip my hat to you for such a special job well done. In a world so full of crap and worse, you are a breath of Iverson Ranch, of all that is sacred to us born in the 50's bunch, and grew up with all the Western Stars you showcase, and honor every week. I can not thank you enough. You Rock better than Jagger. Thank you again. RP.

This was a joy to watch, I remember my father and oldest brother were huge western fans, they loved Gunsmoke. I always felt that Mr Arness was a humble man. I didn't know he was a skier. It was nice to hear about him from someone who was married to him. No fake or made up stuff. Gun smoke reruns still come on. To know 3 Generations are still watching that show, it's exciting each time we sit down to watch, reliving the memories. My dad passed 3 years ago. He still watched Gun smoke reruns till he passed. That was the number one show. No other Western could compete. No other Marshal, could compare to Matt Dillion. I'm smiling now, thinking of my dad and how we had to be quiet. Give my dad respect when he was home watching his favorite show. Next to that was all the cowboy movies. The Duke. If my dad was off work. You can bet he was in the living room in front of the TV. We kids better be quiet. It was dad time to relax, enjoy whatever he was watching. 👍💯❤️. Love, respect and positivity always. Vee, Andrew, and Family.🙂✌️🖖👋.

A bronze luggage tag that has the opening seen of Gunsmoke that has Gene Feldman name inscribed on it that James Arness gave away at Christmas time to cast and crew and a set of toy guns and holster still in the box signed by Jim from How The West Was Won, Proudly displayed!

Great collection of interviews! You always seem to get guests who are never at a loss for words (although there MAY be a huge pile of stuff on the cutting room floor that we never see). You definitely ask the right questions and in a way that makes them comfortable. I tried doing radio interviews many decades ago and was a complete flop. The worst one wasn't my fault. The guy who was supposed to interview former heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Patterson didn't show up, so I had to do it....with no prepared questions. Not only do I know nothing about boxing, but I couldn't understand a thing the guy said when I actually DID come up with a question. I gladly leave that job to the pros, like you.
