Jon (Pirate) and Ali (Mabel) met on the same stage five years ago performing with the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Ali's family is in the 2nd row. Jon's father is a pirate in the cast (purple vest with top hat) and his mother is in the 4th row. The proposal was a complete surprise to Ali, the cast and the audience. No one knew except the music director, the stage manager, and Ali's father (Jon asked for permission during intermission).
This video documents Jon and Ali's UMGASS engagement from Jon's "Stop, Ladies and Gentlemen, Pray" requesting permission of the audience, through to an exit into the mythical toy box into the next stages of their lives. You will hear the cheering drown out Ali's answer to Jon's question, but she confirms her approval of his proposal with a consenting kiss.
The orchestra is playing "Ah, leave me not to pine", which is an excerpt from the Mabel/Frederic love duet in Act II. Special thanks to Karl Zinn for the videography, Laura Swierzbin for the music, Mark Battell for the curtain, box and ring arrangements, and the Doctor of Divinity for bringing Mabel forward
