Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 49: Bedding the Frames

  • Winter is coming and there is always something to do. We worked on getting Victoria buttoned up for the winter and hosted a middle school class for a field trip. With all that out of the way and frames well sanded and oiled, it was time to bed and screw in the frames.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I have been watching with interest as I have stood by the construction of a number of steel vessels. One comment I would make is that you do not want to bolt down, any equipment such as your engine, that needs alignment until after she has been in the water for a while and takes up the final shape.

Some how your channel showed up in my recommended videos December of 2020 and I have been binge-watching from the beginning. I love DIY topics and you have a great story. You both contribute in such a unique way, great teamwork. I was so relieved to see the use of expert consultants, gentry crane, personal safety equipment...Alix wearing boots, haha. I am excited to catch up to where you are today. Keep it up.

Wow, I need to get up earlier-over 380 comments in one day! Alix, boring is a one hour class on electromagnetic fields, five days a week. What you and Stephen are doing is far more enjoyable than that by at least one hundred times. It is a good thing you are doing with the local community. Those kids will remember what you showed them for a lot longer than most of their other subjects. Arabella is looking more beautiful everyday. Thank you both for another informative video.

As far as the standard/slotted fasteners, I'd have gone with keyed torx and just filled the head with a dense wax after installing.
Society's moved away from slotted for a reason- Stripping the head is astonishingly easy to do, and once you've ramped the slot, removing it is nigh impossible. More points of contact between the tool and the fastener means more points required to fail/round before stripping the entire head out. I've only rounded a torx once, and that was a rounded tool that caused it. Fresh tools never do.

I hate to be "that guy" but when drilling, you're not pulling the bit out far enough to let the wood get off the bit. So its heating up the wood that is stuck on the drill bit and thus making it more difficult to get that last inch or so drilled. It will also shorten the life of the bit from the heat. Love this project, and look forward to every episode. You guys rock!

That excursion they entertained sure will profit from their day out in multiple ways - teacher did a fine job searching for a place like Arabella's building site, while he probably didn't know Steve'n Alix would turn it into a highlight of some sort.
I had a teacher like that when I attended boatbuilding classes, who would take us during each theory bloc to several very different places of special interest for the trade, still vividly remembered decades later. (Thanks Fulko!)

It was the second time that school has come and we have at least one other local school that would like to visit. It's great to show the kids some practical uses for the knowledge they are learning and to see another avenue in life. Some of the kids were bored stiff but others had that glint in their eye and were loving it. Maybe someday one of them will build a boat or some other wild dream of theirs.

What will help your spade drill-bit's retention in the screw slots a bit more is if you go one step further and hollow-grind the bit, a-la "Posi-Drive." You don't have to go crazy with it, though. A little dab'll do ya.

Great work guys. Editing and music were superb !
Building my own boat is on my someday list. I've watched so many sailing vids I'm about burnt-out on them. If I'm on a sailing channel now it's mostly destination focused around the PNW, NZ, Philippines or the like that have stunning views. The places that gave me the dream in the first place.
When I started looking, wooden sailboat builds was a huge void. Plenty of steel and fiberglass, but not wood. It's quite possible I was just missing them though. Your channel, along with Garrett and Ruth at Salt and Tar, and Leo at Sampson Boat co are filling that void nicely. Each in your own way are doing wonderfully at showing step by step more or less how to and what it takes to build a wooden sailboat. You guys are inspiring and it won't surprise me a bit if we see quite a few more self builds getting started in the next few years.
Thanks for following your dream and sharing it with the world, inspiring backyard boat builders everywhere.

I think it's Alix Kreder. He's mentioned editing the videos lots of times...

Steve, you almost hit one of my big pet peeves, the use of "flat head." Yes, the screws you chose are flat headed but that has nothing to do with the fact that theyhave STRAIGHT SLOTS. Round headed, fillister headed pan headed and oval headed screws can also have straight slots. They can all also have Phillips sockets. Just please don't call it a "flat head screwdriver." There's just no such thing as a flat head screwdriver; it's a straight blade screwdriver! I know you didn't but you came close. You guys are normally so precise on your technical terms and that is one of the things that makes your videos so great. Keep up the high standards. I've had to dig years of marine accumulation out of Phillips screw heads and applaud your selection. Thanks!

      Haha
Growing up they were always "flat head screw drivers and flat head screws" but your point is well taken. We will try to be correct with the terms but please forgive us if we slip. Old habits die hard!
