- The planking process can be something of a mystery. Unlike houses that are square and easily divided up to figure out siding, boats require a little bit more thought and layout for them to look right.
In this video we go over a little bit of the lining off process. Lining off is the process of determining what each plank of the boat is going to look like so that the hull looks evenly planked.
We have a lot of planking coming up soon so this was an opportune time to have our friend Thad Danielson come and explain a bit of this process to lay the groundwork for the job to come. One of the teachers at the WoodenBoat school, Thad has been a great resource for us as we figure things out throughout the build.
Finally, we haven't forgotten about our stuffed Macaw poll. Tennis ball treatment or no? We'll let you know at the end of the video.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Good to see you have Thad aboard for advice. When the boat is finished he would make a great addition to the crew for shakedown sails. I have sailed with him a couple of times and it is always an education.
Hey!! With all the details you shared about the garboard, I am surprised you did not give a shout out about the garboard seam and the caulker's term for it - "the devil." It was given that name because of the difficulty in being able to get a good line of cotton into the garboard seam. This is the origin of the expression "Between the devil and the deep blue sea," since there is only the thickness of the ship's hull planking between this seam and the water outside the boat (hopefully). I learned about this while working wooden shrimp boats many years ago and thought I would pass it forward in case you had not run into it in your reading. A good expression to keep in mind when you go about fastening the garboard. Cheers!! Rick.
Great when you can self produce and control your content. The details and explanations do not wind up on the cutting room floor. Which is the meat n taters of the channel. The part many, if not all enjoy. TV producers usually find that stuff boring and try to interject drama. So hats off everyone for consistently delivering the goods.
One of the advantages of instructing someone or a group of people is that it can bring things into clarity for the presenter. I hope that if you were cloudy on a few details that they have become clear for you, Stephen and Alix. Peace be with you.

this shows that anyone and everyone is an artist! all it takes is careful planning and some courage to not be afraid to make mistakes. because in the end they are just happy accidents that can be adjusted and fixed to the desired outcome!

One of the things that makes your videos so great is that you know how to teach. The engineer side of me enjoys the technical discussions as much as the woodworker and artist in me enjoys the crafting of the parts. The influence of your work here and Leo's work on Tally Ho has led me to looking at simple sailboat plans. Much like your forest, you appear to be dropping acorns to grow the next generation of boat builders :-)
In my line of work (software), I can silently think about and attempt resolving a problem for several hours, sometimes days. When I explain the problem to another person (out loud), without fail, that's when a solution is realized ...without any advice from the other person. There is just something about saying things out loud. I'm sure that producing these videos, which naturally makes you say everything "out loud", you've resolved several issues this way.
A former coworker was once a monitor in the computer lab at college. The lab had a teddy bear sitting on top a filing cabinet. The Lab's policy was that, before a student could ask the lab monitor for help, the student had to explain the issue to the teddy bear (out loud). The monitor usually didn't have to help.
I've been meaning to comment for a long time. Today is the day. Building any of these older wooden boats you had to be woodcarver,blacksmith , mathematician ,painter, sealer, welder,cabinetmaker, wheeler,a dealer,a sculpted,a Sawyer ,a logger,a draftsman ,and a Craftsman. If I missed anything let me know. It's a good thing your a big dreamer too!! Kudo's I wish I wasn't so dang old I'd come help for the fun of it
I see these every Friday night here in Aus as soon as the notification comes through. This one has opened my eyes to the intricacies of planking that I'd never even considered before. Way too complicated for my pea brain to comprehend. Heaven forbid I ever try another minuscule boatbuilding project, but if I do, I’ll stick to no brainer stitch and glue construction. Yes you both are artist's , just look at the marvelous wooden boat ! I did not comment during the "voting" time period. However, I fully agree with your decision to keep the stuffed bird in a place of honor in your boat house, instead of letting the dog use it for a "chew-toy". The video's of Leo's boat project are just as great as yours. Your explanation of "scaling" is very "on-point". I have been trained in the old-school mechanical drawing methods and relish seeing you explain and apply this knowledge and skill in the boat project... very good.

My friend had the same wooden boat you are building, his Dad did most of the work on it.
I used to sail on it and it was a great yacht as with a yacht like that it went though the water and not over it which made for a more comfortable trip at sea.
You two are much more clever and far more ahead of us than you have let us to believe from TH-cam. I really admire what you are doing.

As was the case with lofting, I am particularly intrigued by the lining off and diminishing board process. This was a very good and very helpful overview of how that all works.

I liked the walk through the wood! Apparently skilled shipwrights used to do this, looking for suitable shaped oak trunks and boughs that could form the more intricate parts of even really big 'ships of the line'. Fascinating glimpse back into history. How nice to have someonewho still has the skill to advise on this. BobUK.

Arabella will indeed be built by these two men and with a little help from their friends. They learn as they go, and I appreciate that outlook. They ask when they need advice, they research when they want to see "how it is sometimes done" and they forge ahead. All the while learning from but not being dependent upon others for their progress. Personally, I look forward to what seems like it's a long video and when you've watched it, you feel as though it went by in 5 minutes of less. Keep it up guys...

Most of this went right over my head. Since I will never build anything on your scale, that's probably OK. I can watch in amazement how you carry the plan to fruition and coherently explain how you do it. I'm an old guy and much more familiar with engines than sawdust. You guys have changed the way I look at my woods. I walk thru now and wonder what sort of a boat could be built from it.

Planking was the job I relished most. On the 75' -200 ton trawlers, we would cut along at 2 to 3 strakes a day.
You are pretty much spot on with your understanding of lining off. I would say, dividing the height into 2 or 3 sections is a wise move. For what it's worth I would go for the shear plank first, then a strake or two top side planks, before planking from the garboard up. You have no anxiety about a fair sheer that way and you can dispense with a few ribbands. There is nothing wrong with nailing on batons in lieu of planking, to give you sight of what the finished article will look like. Enjoy!
No doubt about it, planking is going to take a lot of time and labor to get it done. I hope you have 2 or 3 sets of 12" dividers to help you. Now the fun begins. Happy sailing.

Same here. There will never be too much information for anyone who wants to learn. The more knowledge, the more the next guy or gal can fall back on these videos as a help in build g their own boat.
Also, for smaller craft/boats, "Tips From a Shipwright" has loads of detail. Bigger boats, that can't get into dock, need a runabout, dory, or skiff to get to shore from the anchored yacht.

A fascinating part of the build is about to start; I don't think anyone will complain about seeing all of the planking as it goes on. Pleased that Akiva got some prezzies and the parrot was saved. There is a good explanation on planking small boats by Marcus Lewis on a channel called Traditional Maritime Sills, but his method is mostly calculated using battens and fairing by eye, because the boat is much smaller; so this method is going to be interesting to follow.

Having shipwright Louis Sauzedde help with planking would make your boat build HISTORIC.
Love Lou, he is awesome at explaining this nautical stuff too. With his experience he could likely tell these young ship builders where they will likely have to make repairs in the future depending on the choices they make during each aspect of the build.

I'm in awe of you two and I don't care about your lack of art work, what you are both doing is a work of art in its self . And the human story you are telling is an inspiration to others. Love the videos, great information. The content reminds me of television programs of the 60's. You get us so close to actual building then it's stay tuned for the next episode. I know with all the materials you can build a boat and you will one day run out of teasers.

You guys are doing a great job. I am enjoying the way you are learning and explaining as you go. Bud McIntosh's "How to build A Wooden Boat" has good advice on lining off plank ( it seams that you may have read it). For us older folks, Howard Chapelle's "Boatbuilding" was the Bible on how to line off plank. It is what separates the men from the boys. Don't worry about the fish but every time you are on a slipway there may be someone critiquing your line of plank even though they may not say anything. No Pressure!
Before you fasten off that lovely garboard don't forget the stop waters!

You mentioned the tent caterpillars, which have decimated some of the maple sugar bushes in my part of Ontario. Here we have been spraying with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a natural, soil dwelling bacterium which does not harm other wildlife or affect the maple trees in any way. With mature maples, of course, you have no option but to get aerial spraying done and that would apply to your trees as well, which increases the cost, of course. Just a thought - you have such a lovely forest.

As a CAD designer I really love to see what methods you can use to get your results without a computer. I myself would never think of using a diminishing board. I'd just set the whole thing up in CAD and shift it around until I like it.
I love your videos and am super impressed with your build, I've been following for years. I am certainly NOT a boat builder but I am a sailor. That said, can I recommend that you consider wheel steering rather than a tiller? Your boat, your dream, but from what I've seen you are going to have a really heavy boat that will be difficult to handle even with a two meter long tiller especially given your admission that you guys haven't sailed much. Again, just my two cents and by no means criticism at all. Just something to consider.

Just kidding, I love that it takes so long to build Arabella, because that means we get more awesome videos!
It takes the pros months to years to build a boat/ship from scratch. Maybe not as long as these guys, but this is their first build, I believe, so that will extend the time exponentially, not to mention all hands on deck for most of this build is usually two (plus the occasional visiting helper) sets of hands where as pro crews are usually a few more sets of hands on a boat this size or larger. I think their progress is great for what they have to work with in the number of hands on and experience level they possess.
