@@alanduff1054 Absolutely true. But what Bird did his rookie year puts an exclamation point on it, because none of those other guys were there yet, and the Celtics still went from 29 to 61 wins in one season. He literally changed the entire character of the club, which is something you can't measure in stats. Same with Magic, who took a mediocre team and made them champions..again in one season. Ditto Bill Russell when he arrived in Boston. They are my top 3.

7:44 MJ was being regarded as the next one up early on but being that he hadn’t achieved that much at that point, the league was still centered around Magic & Bird (Lakers/Celtics), Kareem, Doc still being around as elder statesmen also. The Bulls/Celtics matchups got more interesting when Pippen and what would be their core squad from the first three peat got better, which is basically 88, 89-91. The Celtics of the mid 80’s are on the very short list of the greatest teams of all time so only the Lakers of that period were their one true rivals. Either way, we’ll never see the likes of this type of competition ever again so it’s always good to see it from different vantage points. Appreciate you doing this digging bruh, so much history to unlock!

During MJ's second year, Larry was the only NBA player that was talking about MJ. While the rest of the All-stars were trying to avoid talking about Jordan, Bird was always elevating his praise of Michael. After Jordan's 63-point game against the Celtics, Bird was tired of Jordan not getting the attention he deserved, so he called MJ "God disguised as Michael Jordan". Since Bird, as one of (along with Magic Johnson) the two biggest names at the time, he essentially, personally tore down the "freeze-out" policy all the other stars had against MJ and forced them to have to acknowledge him. Jordan mentions that Birds praise that day was what initially allowed him to start getting significant attention from the public and bypass the 'hazing' that the other, more jealous stars were putting him through. Jordan actually mentions this in an interview.

So it is a weird case that Jordan was super capable of getting the trip dubs but for whatever reason was less inclined to do it when he was SG.....in addition to the Triangle Offense reducing assist chances because the ball was purposely spread around when it came to assists.

The Celtics and the bulls did face off when the bulls were in their prime. A severely physically injured bird took it to the mj / pipen bulls in one of birds last games and there was nothing the bulls could do to stop bird. bird even dropped the game winning buzzer beater despite mj and pipen being all over him with the double team. I think that might even be the game where bird had to be admitted in the hospital and spent a day or two in "traction" just to be able to walk out on the court

Both are great passers. Magic was more dedicated to it in his peak than bird but both could sling it. To say Magic is an inferior passer is not fair or particularly true. He was otherworldy in his assists otherwise he wouldn't have finished where he did nor had the seasons he had. Sure he benefited from great scorers but so did Larry. Larry was skilled at it but I would say Magic was more effective at getting it to teammates in a position to score easily and thus complete the assist, that's the difference between them.
Respect Magic as you respect Larry. That's how Larry would want it.

That is disingenuous to say he needed the ball to have an impact. MJ struggled to score in game 7 of the 1998 ECF but the Bulls won because he held Reggie Miller scoreless the final like 18 minutes of the game. He was a terror defensively even in his older years. He also was a capable rebounder for his position being one of the top 3 rebounding SG in league history and on the night he scored 69 he also grabbed 19 boards....as a shooting guard on the same floor as Brad Daugherty, Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant.
That said, Bird was a better rebounder clearly and as good if not a better passer....but he wasn't the defender Jordan was. I don't know if Bird is better all-around moreso he did things clearly better than Jordan and MJ isn't head and shoulders above him.
It also helped Bird that he had McHale, Parish, Dennis Johnson, Bill Walton (for 2 seasons), Ainge, Maxwell, etc to be difference makers with the ball so he didn't NEED to have to ball to win games. He could just be the best rebounder and passer on the floor and let his deep team of great scorers do all the scoring work. Jordan didn't have the luxury of 5 HOFers and several strong 6th man candidates to work with (not a knock on Bird, just context).
Bird is the best SF that's ever played.

Another good reaction from you. Appreciate this video as usual. Love the insight you always give. However im curious what your opinion is on this. You mention at the beginning of this video that Jordan had no chance against the Celtics with the team he was playing on in his 2nd year. You mention Jordan didnt have Pippen, Grant, Cartwright, Rodman, Kucoch and so on. I agree with you by the way. But what does that say about Larry? He came in the league in 79-80 and joined a team that went 29-53. With the same guys on the team and adding Bird Boston goes +32 in the win column. 61-21. Jump to season 2 and Boston adds Parrish, and drafts Mchale as a rookie. Boston wins it all in 1981 in Birds 2nd year. So Bird made the impact right away for Boston to be able to win a title in his 2nd year where as Jordan couldnt and didnt make that kind of impact for Chicago. Also i want to point out that it took MJ 3 years with pippen and Horrace on the team to win the title in 91 where as it took Bird in year 1 with Parrish and Mchale to win it all. Just some food for thought. My favorite player of all time is Bird BUT Jordan is my G.o.a.t. he is the best ever in my opinion but regarding the idea that Jordan had no shot because of the team he was on just has to make you appreciate Bird even more because of him making an impact from day 1. F outta here! I’m really glad U did this video. I consider myself to be a MJ historian, and I did not knw just as you stated, that MJ won 11 games versus Larry. The way, Nick and Shannon talked about it. You wld think that MJ never won 1 game! but I knew that it wasn’t true because I knw they don’t tell the whole story so Bron wnt 👀 bad!

They were completely different peaks. Bulls then was not winning against a championship team like Boston, and Bird was at his peak. Jordan and the Bulls wasnt even developed yet...need context in these agruments
