Driver San Francisco, 12 Years Later

  • Driver San Francisco is one of those true cult classics. It's a game that I had always heard my friends and the racing game community as a whole praise for being one of those true one-of-a-kind passion projects. I missed out on it and put it low on my to-play list as the last Driver I had played was Driv3r, and the less said about that game, the better. 12 years after its initial release, it was finally time to play Driver San Francisco, and boy was I ever shocked at what I had been missing out on. Driver San Francisco combined ingenious approaches to how not just racing games told stories, but the medium as a whole. While it may be fresh in my mind, I can easily say that Driver San Franciso goes up into my favourite racing games of all time.

Plus, having some fancy driving effect doesn't give the game personality, it's like putting a bow on a pig

      @@serperior2264 you are not the one to decide whether they are playing it safe or not. The direction was clear from the beginning, as you can see from the leaked Alpha gameplay. Just because they didn't cel shade everything doesn't make it half assed lmao. Also tell me one game that is not Automodellista that has similiar effects like Unbound?
      I will definitely remember Unbound for it's art style and it definitely makes it stands out compared to the other big arcade racers, even when the gameplay is lacking

      -no, it does make it half assed, just because it was "clear from the beginning" doesn't mean it wasn't poorly implemented, plenty of people hate the cell shaded look and Criteron probably predicted this, therefore decided to make the entire rest of the game realistic to try and appease these people, this in contrast to games like Art of Rally or Need for Speed Nitro which both fully commit to their artsyles and actually stand out as unique because of it, without the driving effects, Unbound is almost indestiquishable from Heat
      -If it helps it stand out for you, then that's great, I actually personally like it myself, however, I'm disappointed they didn't go all the way with it like other games would have

    • @rightbehindyou9398
      @rightbehindyou9398 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@purpleturtle8841 Fair enough, but what other issues does it have? I don't like how when you buy a paintjob/vinyl/rims you can't see it in the tuners anymore and have to go to HQ, and sometimes car physics in cutscenes break (due to one of the major updates), and it's always online connection which sucks and only hurts the game (and the players). That's all the issues I can name.
      Everything else in the game is a blast. People (who didnt even play the game) liked to slam on it too much because of hivemind mentality, while in reality TC1 is one of the greatest racing games ever made. It has a great car customization, the car spec feature is amazing, the map is still the most big AND detailed map in any game I've seen, the story is good (reminds of me driver), the general game style/aesthetic is impeccable (sadly ruined by Wild Run DLC), the music selection is very fitting and memorable (also reminds me of driver), the online/multiplayer is extremely well done (both PVP and PVE), and guess what, the handling is great if you take less than a minute to tinker in the handling options (even better with a steering wheel).
      I still play this game almost a decade later with my friends and there are almost no issues we run into, and if we ever do they're minor and quite rare. This is really one of those games that you have to play yourself and really soak in the atmosphere to vibe with it, and while we all have our opinions, the "Ehh" you gave this game is kind of insulting.
      (I don't mean to fanboy over this game that hard, but having spent the last decade playing mediocre to downright terrible racing titles that never innovate or improve on anything, I really started to appreciate older games like TC1 a lot more)

    • @rightbehindyou9398
      @rightbehindyou9398 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vegas70 Why are you making it sound like the car damage is so poor? It's better than FH2/3 that came out with 1-2 years difference. Driver SF came out 3 years prior from a different studio (although ivory tower did collaborate with reflections on TC1), but 2014/2015ish was the turning point where open world racing titles started having toned down car damage models, we don't know for sure why but we can assume it's at least partially because of licensing terms changing. And grid is a closed track simcade racer from 2008 anyway, not a fair comparison.
      Honestly sounds like a classic nitpick non-issue that people liked to complain about regarding TC1. Me and many others have been playing this game for nearly a decade and the car damage model never bothered us, and it's nice to have one at all unlike FH to this day having a few scratches and small dents and that's it. And going on even further, it seems that TC1 had a slightly better damage model prior to the 2015 Wild Run update (or as I consider it, a somewhat of a downgrade), which might be an even bigger indicator of licensing terms being the problem.

    My favorite thing about the story is the way it balances the fact that nothing Tanner does in the coma has an effect on reality with keeping him relevant. Sure, he doesn't DO anything in the coma, but he does LEARN quite a bit from the TV in his room, and that lets him put together Jericho's plot while everyone else is running around in a panic.

An action film like story, hell even driving the cars (Specially from interior view) feels like playing a realistic game or something. This game is also ahead of many modern titles nowadays. We're in a stage of racing games right now of "Freedom, but to a fault."
    Like, giving someone who has never played a piano before a piano, and going "You're free to make music!"
    Someone who has never played a piano has more "freedom" to make noise than someone who has been a practiced pianist, and has the skills to know what noise is just noise, and what noise is actually pleasant music, this parallel can be applied to new racing games as well. you can do whatever you want in the recent forza games, but unless you have the knowledge and finesse to builld yourself a compelling story, and therefore game, given the VAST sandbox you are presented with, you're left just kinda playing in the sand, not building anything worth playing.
    You're not a dev, yet here the dev is giving you all the tools to build your game the way you want it, and going "Fine, do it yourself."

    -Car chases

    -Keeping people alive
    -Stopping bad things from happening
    -protection missions
    -that cable tv guy trying to capture wild driving
    But my Absolute favourite one was the kidnapping city mission, where you legit feel the tension with the kidnapper, the actual fear and horror from the dad and how driving on main roads felt like you were doing the wrong thing (you weren’t allowed to drive on them and you’d feel and hear music that you were doing the wrong thing)

  • @SetsunaTheFandom

    Thinking about this game always make me think about how the game is totally unique on its own. It has story that is so extra and yet at the same time is actually genius from narrative stand point. The licensed cars is a nice touch but the balance between the cars you'd see on roads commonly and high-end sports cars makes it click. It's sad that it fell victim to perhaps one of the worst business decisions in gaming, but I'm glad that this game gets recognition.
    I just wish that I could get my hands on this game to experience it myself.

      I've heard that The Crew 1 ( and later The Crew 2 as well) should have originally been planned as a sequel to Driver SF. We got a different game but with a good Story nonetheless.
      I liked TC1 so much I bought the second one and was strongly disappointed, literally only one line in the whole game talking about something that was a part of TC1.
      The Summit in TC2 is what made me drop it (after getting the Platinum which I must say wasn't hard).
      Nothing new + Story not worth replaying made it not worth getting better parts or new cars.

    What I love about this game is how they introduced new cars in each chapter while keeping either 3, 4, or 2 cars from previous chapters in the new one. What I also love is how many cars that you’ve never been able to play before, just AI’s in other games, are now playable here. I just loved that and how they brought many underrated cars in the real world (imo) into this game. It really feel’s special in a way. And ofc I love the story. I’ve played this game since I was 4-5 years old and now 16, I still play it. This will always be my fav race car game.

    The thing that lacks in this game in my opinion is more small hidden spots on the map that you can explore after finishing the game, like in burnout paradise, for example.
