Need For Speed The Run Was A Bite-Sized Masterpiece

  • Need For Speed The Run is a dynamite-fueled escapade from the more traditional and conservative racing game. With no expense spared on chaos, explosions, and... quick time events? The Run is one of my favourite games in the series, however, it is certainly not without its faults. In this video I go over The story mode, challenge Series, as well as why The Run never took off commercially and the unfortunate circumstances around the game's main direction. If you would like to see more Need For Speed reviews from me please consider subscribing as I have much more coming in the upcoming weeks and months!

      This was the only NFS i bought at release and I will never do it again. Driving was meh, story was meh, a lot is going on but nothing matters etc. And I could even drive around like in any other nfs.

    I had a roommate who never played video games and was the college topper. One night he saw me playing this and wanted to try out. I gave him the game from the beginning running on my laptop. He Pulled an All Nighter playing the game and completing it by next morning. I was awake till chapter 2-3 but then i gave up. Dude was soo immersed he completed it with no prior experience of playing Video games. Can you believe that. That's why The Run was truly amazing.

      Basically. The Crew but a bunch of the map cut out and blocked off for optimization and race flow (could mean the server could group players to specific routes and lower the server load). Multi-route race with cops and enemy NPCs.
      Multiplayer racing speedrun. Extremely dynamic time and weather. Takes more than 30 minutes to complete. Winners could possibly respawn to defend or take down the remaining players.

  • @samuelpierce2.088
    @samuelpierce2.088 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    One way that I think Black Box could’ve *potentially* improved The Run is by letting the player choose between multiple routes throughout the game, with all routes converging on the various big cities (for obvious story purposes).
    For example, let’s say you just beat the first major race in the game, and have managed to escape San Francisco…when you play through the next stage, you will be given the chance to pick which route you take via off-ramps on the interstate highways. Each route allows you to experience a variety of unique destinations and challenges as you progress through the game; From tense seaside cliff driving in the Pacific Northwest against handling-focused Tuners (obviously going from Washington to Wyoming), to blasting through ancient Pueblo and Navajo ruins while fending off off-road-capable Muscle Cars in the American Southwest (going from Arizona to Texas), to weaving your way through the industrialized marshlands of the Deep South (Louisiana to Northern Florida), there’s tons of potential for interesting challenges and set-pieces. All of which can be experienced by the player at their own leisure.
    Add in the huge roster of cars available in the base game, and a reworked progression system where you can unlock cars by completing various sections of the different routes, and well…you have a recipe for what could be one of the best NFS games Black Box ever created.

    • @guerillla6
      @guerillla6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Very valid point. The movie Redline also had something like this. Different routes with convergences at certain cities. But then again it’s sort of already implied, because think of it, how would some of the rivals like Caesar, mila and Marcus been reoccurring with jack when we never saw them pass us, unless they took a different route? Plus at stage 4 when jack is entering the million dollar highway, Sam tells jack to head into the mountains so the cops won’t keep up. That indicates that jack took a shorter albeit more dangerous route to avoid arrest.
      If EA had given black box more time to finish the game, but sadly we’ll never know

    4:53 I would also say, up to this point, I really liked what NFS the run had set up. A good structure and some really nice plot hooks. the issue comes when you realize, while the gameplay is solid, there's almost no pay off to any of it. I was at least hoping for why Jack was in debt (maybe one of the other racer's set him up or something like that), but nope all character development and plot progression just stopped right here and progressed very little till the end credits.

    I remember not being too fond of this game when we first got gameplay footage of it and assuming it would be a pile of crap just because my younger self was like "no free roam? no upgrades? no thanks" and then one of my closest friend who also happened to be my next door neighbor got it. We "borrowed" a lot of eachother's games at the time and I ended up having an amazing time with this one. It was sad when it all ended so soon but it was well worth going through it all again with the difficulty nearly maxed out with the exception of the mode where you only had one chance to win or you'd start from the beginning of the game again... At least that's how I remember it anyway, I could be wrong.

    Nice to see that there are more The Run enjoyers out there C::
    Pro Street is my number one, but The Run is right behind it.
    What do they have in common? They both have unique playstyles and events.
    Top Speed and Speed Challenges in Pro Street are supreme and it's a shame that they were never used in any other entry. I love how you can turn "undrivable" cars, like a Dodge Charger R/T, into a machine that can survive Nevada Highway and defeat a Pagani Zonda.
    The Run might be a short experience, and sadly have a very small pool car from the get go, but the action, sense of danger, difficulty (Very Hard is really punishing), and intensity of the races stand over every other NFS game.
    If only Blackbox was given another year or two to develop something more robust, these titles would have been pretty much flawless racing games.

    Another thing to keep in mind about the cars is, using a gas station to switch puts you about 10 seconds behind where you were before. The game doesn't pause the race going into it, and it doesn't pause the race coming out of it, only while you're picking a car when you've come to a complete stop. Theres one race where theres a gas station right at the end. If you use it, you lose. Also if you ever get a cop takedown camera, you also lose, because your car slows to a crawl while your opponents shoot ahead.

    Well, there is a way to use the hyper-cars in the campaign itself (through a in-game bug). To anyone who might need it just to have fun; Start campaign mode and finish the first race (Nob hill and the get out of city) > Hit escape and restart the event > When event restarts, hit escape again and quit the race > Go to challenge series and select East Coast Express > Choose your hyper-car and start any event > Event starts, hit escape and quit challenge series > Resume campaign mode and have fun.

    The graphics looked insanely cool to me back then, the environement, details of the city etc, mixed with an intense gaming experience. The Run was ahead of its time, Payback has some similarities with the whole movie-esque scenes but it was dialed down in comparison to The Run. Only killer was the short campaign

    One of my favorite aspects of The Run is the Soundtrack. It's so tense! It captures perfectly the emotion of driving ridiculously fast cars with the cops right on your ass. It's amazing, and the theme song of the menu give me chills when it starts. Brian Tyler nailed it.

    It's worth noting there are a number of patches you can get for the PC version to unlock every vehicle (including exclusive ones and Limited Edition ones) for singleplayer use. Given the multiplayer is now totally dead, it adds a whole lot of fun playing through the campaign with all manner of cars. The bug in the PC version that lets you use any car from any tier in the Run just makes it better.

    Little background for the game, when the Run was released, Black Box was already after multiple layoffs and in the middle of EA disassembling them, in the previous year they released Need For Speed World which had an active team working on it in the long run, Skate 3, then next year helped with Battlefield 3 and made The Run and then getting completely obliterated in the upcoming years.
    The fact that the last 2 games they put out (Skate 3 and The Run) were pretty good while having a heavily cut down team is nothing short of a miracle.

    I bought it for 1€ + 2€ shipping on Ebay based on your recommendation. And I can agree on many of your points. The snow section is just hilarious.
    I just wanted to point out, that the rubber band ai is acting quite weird. It keeps close to you during the race and at the end sometimes the opponents just stop, so that i could win. Other times you have to ace it, so you could just barely win it.
    Furthermore it is difficult. I played it on my first run on the highest difficulty thinking it would be easy. And it was not easy. Especially the time races are though wining it by milliseconds.
    Another very annoying point is the buffering between sequences or when you have to restart the race. I played it on 360 and it took sometimes 45 secs to restart a race! I actually stopped the time just to see how long it takes.
    But all in all it was worth it. It is very entertaining and i had to laugh a lot while playing it. In that regard i dont mind, that the story mode is short. Especially when you consider that it cost 70€ when it came out. And now you can buy it for 1€ on ebay.

    The main reason I kept going back to this game every day for like 4 years was the online multiplayer. I was racing with some of the best and fastest players on the PS3 online. There's a mountain stage that's a really long winter race starting on a divided highway that you can kinda cheat right off the start that is extremely high risk because it cuts the first half of the race in half but if you wreck at any point before you get back onto the main route you restart at the very beginning which can set you in last place up to a full minute behind the next closest racer

    I do agree on the fact that the game had a very interesting gameplay and story potential, I remember my first playthrough and it was an I had a great time with it, but I recently replay this game campaign and notice that at least on pc, there’s a lot of “cut content” bc there are cinematics that doesn’t exist. My main problem with this game in particular was the repetition, sometimes you ended playing the same tracks but backwards, I don’t know how this is posible at a linear game but it’s there

  • @TheIrisCZ
    @TheIrisCZ ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember writing a review for this game back in the day and kinda hating on it. But I have to give credit, where it is due. The game is incredibly memorable and in terms of audiovisual design, it was at the pinnacle of all the games made in its time. I still occasionally catch myself thinking about it. Especially the mountain parts and the two maps right before the finale with winding roads filled with fallen leaves - just gorgeous and unforgettable. From the gameplay perspective, it's quite interesting, because you keep on being invested thanks to the story advancing and the world changing around you.
    However, then the biggest gripe I had with the game hits you - nothing really matters. The potential of The Run is squandered, because the developers don't really let you loose. I understand, that balancing of such a game would be really difficult, but imagine, if the races really mattered and if you failed some, you would have to really try hard in the next one to gain what you've lost.
    If there ever was a Need for Speed game, that could use a difficulty slider with the choices between casual (current state) and harder modes, this would be it. You can keep the "boss races" at the same scripted places, just let the player otherwise feel the stakes. Divide the game into chunks that you have to replay as a whole if you want to get into a better position and let the player actually finish the game on other than the first place and give them a bad ending. On the other hand, we are talking about times, when the producers tended to think people would stop playing at the sight of the first inconvenience and difficulty spike.
    In the end, I think I gave the game a 6/10. The unfulfilled potential, literally broken multiplayer (cars were jumping and lagging all over the place), performance problems at higher frame rates on PC (by higher, I mean more than 30 actually) and gatekeeping of certain cars left some bitter taste in my mouth afterwards. It's sad, because at least it was something new.
