    One problem with grapplers is when the game is new they seem OP because we are still figuring out the game and we struggle with dealing with "if I get in, I win" type characters. People then complain and grapplers get nerfed. THEN as time goes on we figure out the game and we learn how to deal with the games grapplers. So now we know how to deal with a grappler AND the grappler has been nerfed from release. . . so they struggle.
    It kinda reminds me of the Goku Black situation from DBFZ. Cloud805 made this statement once. "Goku Black was never good. . . .we just sucked when the game first came out"

    Nice video.
    I have two comments: a minor addendum to 5P; It whiffs on a LOT of people dashing into you, so it's not even reliable for checking dashes, and it even whiffs on some characters' pre-jump animation (for example, May, Ky).
    The other comment is that I think another one of Potemkin's main flaws is that he's gatekept quite hard by execution requirements; if you can't convert these stray hits into something meaningful via Kara BMF or Hammer Fall Break cancelled into Giganter, then you're leaving a lot of damage on the table and potentially even Garuda oki depending on the route you chose. The issue with this execution "gatekeeping" is that you have to do these tricky inputs just to keep your gameplan going and dropping any kara input can very well end up putting yourself in very bad state with a big whiff.
    The top tiers have consistent metered/meterless routes which either convert into big damage like a wallbreak or continue their strong gameplan with increased momentum. Potemkin is a little behind in that department.

      Garuda is just a stupid ass move that carried him forever tbh. People thought he was strong early cuz he's a grappler though, grapplers are always day one top tiers because their damage requires the least optimization and their gameplan is almost always the most simple to figure out.

      I would hesitate to call Garuda a mid screen pressure tool, once you're out of PB range after garuda, there isn't too much to be scared of unless there's further meter to close the gap.
      Garuda's only scary once you're in kara-PB range after the guard break, despite the range at which the GUN hits.
      Edit: I totally forgot kara-Garuda gives Garufa waaaay more range for possible midscreen pressure, though it's really slow, but yh if u hit the Kgaruda. Nice

    Pot was pretty decent in Season 1 and he dealt well with the top characters on launch like Sol. But over the patches the patches he's fallen behind. Most of the changes to system mechanics don't work well for Pot. FD being stronger means it's much easier to keep him out if you guess right on the initial mix. He can't make use of small counterhits well cuz of slow buttons and can't convert well even with the extra slowdown. He can't dash cancel and his air game is pretty bad so a lot of those buffs don't apply to him.
    Also while he has received some buffs, they largely don't address his core weaknesses and instead just give him more damage when he does get in, which was not his problem at all. Other characters have received more significant changes, especially characters that are some of his worst matchups. The meta is pretty rough for him right now with a lot of Nago, Ram, Zato, GL and other characters that he struggles against.

    Compared to Nago and Goldlewis, I think Pot has a problem with converting hits into his win condition. Nago has enough cancel options and screen presence to “cash out” on any good hit, while Goldlewis just converts almost any button into a Behemoth Typhoon knockdown. Pot has to get some kind of convoluted Garuda set up that doesn’t even loop without the corner in order to have an advantage. I hope future patches let him convert better off of what he already has instead of just making him stronger once he’s already won.

      There's a grappler in a game I play called Fantasy Strike that I'm sure took some inspiration from Potemkin. He has a move called Earthquake that does no damage but gets a KD. However, it's an air move that slams to the ground, so it can be used as an air-to-air against specific situations and gets a KD in the air, too.

    as someone who mained Pot while active with the game... the only reason I was doing remotely as good with him as I was (especially since I suck at Kara canceling) was his high HP. I got to make mad mistakes and all I needed was one good Pot Buster/combo and I was back in the game lol. sounds like while he was decent when I was still playing, he's getting passed up by all the other characters AND not getting the right buffs. Sure the new Gigantor Kai sounds pretty dope, he already could get high damage once he was where he needed to be. he needs defensive help and maybe some faster buttons. He has to commit too much and without meter, it's too risky to do that.

    Part of it is that his mixup is both lacking in layers (strike vs throw and he generally only gets one or two mixup opportunities in a sequence) and is somewhat lopsided, especially midscreen. The low gives great oki, but not much damage. The throw gives a ton of damage, but the Oki midscreen is pretty poor. I'm not scared to get grabbed by Potemkin if I'm not in the corner and it won't kill because the RPS after Buster just isn't scary compared to the post-command grab situation of characters like Nago or Faust.

(Also add ICPM for the fun of it lol)

    • @HellecticMojo
      @HellecticMojo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He doesn't really need new moves. He needs better frame data. He basically has all bases except for reversals and projectiles covered, but all of it has too much start up or too much recovery to be good. His 2P is arguably the best 2P hitbox wise, but is too slow. 6K should be great, but it's super slow to recover and no special combo on normal hit because they are too slow. 5H, great hitbox, painfully slow compared to someone like Nago 5H. Megafist too slow to recover, etc etc
      Adding trishula and ICPM are ultimately adding and accentuating more problems than solving them unfortunately.

    • @forkes1776
      @forkes1776 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HellecticMojo The reason I want to add stuff to his kit is because current Potemkin is boring just guarda oki and Pot Buster as well as he loses too much to the things I mentioned to the point where frame data won't fix it. MFF'S frames won't save you when you're getting jailed by Testament f.S and projectiles or getting twerked on by Sol. Adding these gives him an edge on these characters where they need to think before they try and put Pot in the corner and potential eat a fat combo if they don't. That alone will make playing Pot more interesting and fun with more options to choose from, well also making fighting Pot more dynamic.

      @@forkes1776 Sol's not bad for us at all. Back megafist essentially take care of most his pressure game and approaches. Also FMM will definitely help against Testament since it would counter the grave reaper release.
      Also Trishula won't help at all if he were to get it. Trishula's incredibly slow, is vulnerable to lows and he no longer has same shoulder loop to use it as a combo extender. Normally I would be all for Trishula because it's the most convenient way of wiping out Jack-O minions behind you, but given that the minions hit low enough to hit crawling Faust, that avenue is out. ICPM has the same problem of lacking a niche now in this game because there's already better metered traversal mechanics and Pot already have anti air conversions.

    Just a question, when pot pressures you with Kara giganter (the flame thing), how the hell do you get out?

    • @unlurkingsentinel6872
      @unlurkingsentinel6872 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The flame thing isn't Giganter. Giganter Kai is his shockwall super. _Garuda Impact_ is his flame attack. But I'll attempt to answer both questions (though take my shit advice with a grain of salt).
      If he uses Giganter Kai in neutral, you can theoretically jump over it, but he has every opportunity to anti-air. With character-specific _super_-low profile attacks (Night Raid Vortex, Stroke the Big tree, etc.) you can go under it on reaction. Alternately, if you're out of options, you can run up and faceblock it on purpose instead of letting it walk you to the corner, so long as you're prepared to eat midscreen mix.
      The threat of Garuda comes from non-Garuda strike followups (often 2D) clipping jump attempts; if the opponent has failed to practice their 2D timing and it hits you early, fuzzy jumping still works (needless to say, this only applies to low-level tower opponents). Additionally, its highly visible startup makes reversals against it a theoretically obvious choice, but a well-spaced Garuda will stay out of range of most reversals (not all of them, though; pay attention to your character's options). Ultimately, however, if you can't hit him with a reversal, and their 2D is practiced, then all it really comes down to is the strike/throw 50/50. Jump to avoid kara buster or a second Garuda (Garuda>Garuda has a perfectly jumpable gap), or block a strike to force him into worse pressure. Either is bad if you get it wrong, but that's why it's his win condition. Really, you win by not letting him get away with it to begin with.

I remember him (and DustLoop has the tier list archives to back it up) he was ALWAYS like Mid/A- Tier up until summer and then when S2 dropped all the new lists have him BOTTOM of the list.

    Potemkin can still win, but his pressure is so interactable compared to other characters it's not even comparable.
    Where offence for top and mid tiers is like a slice of swiss cheese with occasional gaps you can use to gamble your way out of their win condition, Potemkin's offence is more akin to a spider web: very rarely is the opponent locked into something, and often relies on good ol' conditioning to get the job done. At this point in S2, this is simply not good enough.
    Other characters can enforce an equally oppressive strike/throw mix-up safely and/or with less interaction (HC, Ram, Ky), and although the damage isn't comparable it gets the job done whilst not sacrificing movement speed, range, and other system mechanics such as air-dash and dash-cancel.

      He has some of the worst meter gain in the entire game. In the betas more of his moves like Heat Knuckle used to generate tons of tension now they don't. Which sort of makes breaking the wall a lose lose situation on pot. You lose you're positional advantage and you can't take advantage of the amazing meter gain form the positive bonus like every other character can. You end up just fucking yourself.

    You go touch on something that a lot of oeople dont mention about grapplers and thats choosing whhat you choose to tank. You have a lot of health, but its not to just bulldoze your way in. If you just eat everything, youll never get in befkre you die. At best, you get kne interactions where they geuss right and punish you. Lol
    You have to play the zoners on their terms, everybody else has longer range than you, and the rushdown can lock you down because of your lack of fast jabs or reverals.

    He has such an intense execution requirement for what you get. For newer players, especially those that may already struggle with certain inputs, like the 632146 or 360⁰, throwing on a 2-frame kara window just to be able effectively use half his tools, sucks. If you flub the input, you then get his -3 on hit 6k and usually get fucked for it, or whiff a special move and get fucked for it. He just doesn't feel good at all for anyone who can't reliably kara-cancel all his stuff
    I love me some grapplers and big bodies in general, but super tight frame windows have always felt like ass to me. I see basically no reason why I shouldn't play Goldlewis over Pot for that playstyle. GL doesn't have a command grab, but he already is terrifying at point blank range, and scares opponents into not wanting to block. It feels like I get the same thing, but I get at least some on-demand forward speed, and don't have to consistently do 1/30th of a second inputs just to do anything. Goldlewis just has to churn butter to get his moves out, and isn't that the main appeal of a grappler/big body in the first place?

      I think you're being a little disingenuous about just how difficult karas are. Yes, the cancel window is 2 frames, but you're plinking the input. The only input that's prohibitively difficult in his kit is 2146k~p (and 2146k~h), especially when done out of 5k/cs, but those aren't necessary to pick the character up, and are something most players can learn with some time investment.

    Slow buttons; mega fist leaves you minus on hit; no invulnerable moves or supers; his super shield, when hit, freezes the scene, so you can mash a second normal hit and break the shield; you HAVE to learn kara to play him...
    Really, he is a meme: he either does a stupid damage, or just is chewed slowly through the round. No middle terms.

    Abare options, in my opinion, are his biggest weakness. His challenge buttons leave very little room for mistakes on when you enter into mash windows, and his fastest button whiffs far more than just people crouching. He becomes heavily oppressed by a lot of characters, which limits his ability to create proper tension to create offensive windows.

    Most characters* (besides like Milia, Ram sorta, May and a couple others) will either get good damage and a knockdown or set up a good position (Zato may not get damage but he can put Eddie on you). Unless Pot is point blank, most pokes will lead to nothing. The risk for Pot to land F.S or 5H compared to stronger characters Goldlewis, or even weaker ones like Sol or Test is horribly unbalanced for him.
