    My lord. The cost of the raw materials that went into this project blows my mind. Like paper isn’t cheap. Especially nice paper, at A2 size that’s then printed. The leather hides for each book. Let alone the cumulative cost of the incidentals like glue, dyes, the card/acryllic, the UV resin, the sizing and gold leaf. Mammoth of a project and you guys have the tools and skills to absolutely blow it out of the park.
    As a bookbinder/leather crafter to see these projects is so inspiring. It’s also great to see how my collection tool collection has grown since your last massive book/wheel of time videos as I recognise your techniques.

    There's already so much (well-deserved) praise on this video already, so I'm going to switch it up and make a suggestion regarding your acrylic stamps for future reference. The problem you were having with inconsistency can only come down to not having the rigidity needed to apply force evenly across the entire stamp. I would suggest backing your stamps with a large flat sheet of steel. For a stamp the size of your spine, I'd suggest 12mm. A bigger area per clamp will need more thickness, maybe even up to 25mm if you want to stamp the entire front or rear cover at once. An alternative to this would be to build an actual press for stamping; something not unlike a single sheet printing press would do well.

      I am not sure but feel like this is not the problem, I rather think its an uneven surface from gluing the parts so some stick out furter and are thus create a deeper impression.

    • @Nerdforge
      @Nerdforge  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +194

      Thanks for this, it's great input! Let me come with a lengthy answer, as much thought goes into this, but not everything makes it through to a video we want to keep somewhat entertaining!
      The issue was not as much uneven pressure, as it was a lack of pressure. A larger clamping area means less force is applied to each stamped part of the leather-and even with a bunch of clamps it was hard to get enough force while not cracking the acrylic (I think it might have been removed from this cut of the video, but in the extended version you can see how the desk we clamped on cracked in half under the pressure from all the clamps 🥲). The second issue was clamping directly on the hard surface of the workbench itself. We found this to give a very shallow impression during clamping, as it effectively only pushes the leather 1-2mm down, before the stamp hits the workbench.
      This is the solution we ended up with:
      - Clamping on smaller sections of the stamp at the time, using a smaller wooden block to disperse the force over the surface. This let us clamp with MUCH more force at the individual sections, instead of a weaker force across the entire thing. So, you're reading this right if you think I mean making the pressure MORE uneven. On the larger stamps, the non-clamped parts of the stamps ended up raising quite far above the leather from the pressure. This of course meant more work, as we had to go around on all sections of the stamp, and clamp them down separately, as opposed to all in one
      - Using a thicker softer surface to clamp down on. We ended using 4mm softboard between the leather and the workbench. This let the stamps impress "through" the leather and into the softboard, yet not as far as to penetrate it, leaving a much deeper impression.
      Our ultimate setup would look something like:
      - Large surface hydraulic press for cold pressing, for even pressure over a large surface area as you mention
      - And/or CNC for machining aluminium stamps that can be heated for heat stamping, and then much less force is needed.
      But we do so many things and there's a limit to how many specialized tools we want to store while we do other things 😅

      To engineer something is to create from ones imagination. Working as an engineer, you create for somebody else's imagination. I would say Nerdforge has engineered an entire TH-cam career around creating fantastic objects. You say you are an engineer, and they aren't, but I don't see any evidence other than trust me bro. Could you create a giant 1 of a kind leather bound book series, and if so, where is it? I understand you went to school to get a degree. It wasn't necessary. Lots of super smart people didn't finish college, like Bill Gates. Also, your point is an argumentative fallacy, appeal to authority. You are claiming to be in a superior position and have authorative, official knowledge, as if you are the bestower of the title engineer. You aren't. Your education level isn't proven, and even if it was, it doesn't make what you are saying: correct, relevant, or better than anyone else. Medical malpractice is a leading cause of death in America. Police make false arrests all the time. Just because someone has a career doing something, doesn't make them, or you, right. Nerdforge are engineers. You are an anon claiming to be an engineer on the internet without providing evidence of your creditials.
      Edit: in this video alone they engineered: rigs, stamps, procedures, a new process. They created everything from scratch. That hole punch rig and mechanism, it was engineered. The more I think about your statement, "if only you got a degree, you too could engineer, like a company pays me to do for them." Who are you? Nerdforge is famous. You, though. They could be an engineer like you? Who are you? Where do you work? Maybe you could be like them by agreeing that college degrees are absolutely unnecessary when a person is capable of doing the job without one. They are engineers. Your degree and job doesn't make you one. More than likely, you are just a printer. People give your their files and you print them out in 3d. That is your job, isn't it?

    I know nothing of book binding, I've never seen it be done before, but I was sooo invested in the process as I watched the video. I'm glad I came across it on twitter. What a fantastic job you've done. There's just something fun and beautiful about seeing people's passion. Even when you know nothing of the subject, it makes you excited and curious.

    As an author myself, this is such a cool video. I am so happy they trusted you with the print. I would have done the same! Never said this before but because I deal with seasonal depression, form October to January I rewatch your videos because they make me feel happy and excited for what’s coming next. I hope that doesn’t sound weird. I just really enjoy everything you do and many times in the last few years since I started my annual rewatch, your videos have given me prompt ideas for short stories.
    Thank you so much!
